Taking the plunge
-
I've been dithering and hesitating to give Ubuntu Touch a spin for months, and the obscene Google monopoly's decision to kill off deGoogled ROMs and open-source repos finally pushed me over the edge.
I've ordered a Fairphone 5, onto which I'll install Ubuntu Touch, and hopefully I will make it my new daily driver. For the things I need that don't exist in the OpenStore, I intend to start developing for Ubuntu Touch.
I suppose it had to happen one day. Google made it today. Wish me luck

@O.o.
Welcome!
I made this choice a year and a half ago and I have never regretted it.
-
@Vlad-Nirky Thanks!
Well, I'm just concerned that I won't be able to use my bank's Android authenticator app - although I'm 99% sure it will work in Waydroid, because it already does in Waydroid on my ARM64 laptop.
The other thing I'm concerned about is, Waydroid too will be impacted by Google's shenanigans eventually, since it's LineageOS, so I'm not really sure switching to Ubuntu Touch is a long-term solution compared to keeping my now-unsupported deGoogled cellphone anyway. So I'm fully expecting to have to buy a small cheapo regular Android smartphone at some point just to be able to do banking. But that's hardly Ubuntu Touch's fault: this is squarely Google's. And there's not much anybody can do about it at this point.
Aside from that, I have a fairly peculiar setup to access my IMAP server at home that I'm fairly sure nothing in Ubuntu Touch will support.
And I have a bunch of NFC-based automation and encryption software going on on my CalyxOS cellphone that I expect I will have to port to Ubuntu Touch myself, because it's such a niche application that I'm pretty sure nobody else will do it for me

@O.o. I use the Belgian bank and identification software without any problems via Waydroid (which is pre-installed under UT). (Use the Waydroid Helper programme from the OpenStore to configure it.)
The easiest way is to use the Android programme Aurora, which allows you to use the PlayStore anonymously.
If you need some background you can ping me. -
@Vlad-Nirky Banking apps are hit or miss. My Dutch bank's app does not even launch. (or it launches but then immediately exits)
-
@arubislander
Yes that was the case for me too.
Using the Aurora App Store, I installed the latest Google Playstore application and it now works. (Crelan) (This is how IodΓ© OS installs its applications)
As for the Itsme belgian official identification app.
So i left my android device.
Of course, these behaviors cannot be generalized, but it is worth testing. -
@Vlad-Nirky Thanks! But I have plenty of experience installing and configuring deGoogled Android ROMs, as well as Waydroid itself. And like I said, my banking app does work in Waydroid already, on my desktop, without even installing MicroG. So unless there's something funky in UT's Wayland, it should work just fine there too.
I'm more concerned about all the other little things I might lose in UT - even silly creature comforts like the Swype-like OpenBoard keyboard in Android: I really, REALLY don't want to go back to hunting and pecking an on-screen keyboard, but it's most likely what I'll have to do in UT.
Or my Yubikey-like NFC authenticator: I use that thing all the time in Android, and I'm 200% it doesn't exist in UT. So I'm gonna have to port it myself, or - if I'm lucky - I might be able to run the desktop GTK equivalent I made myself in Libertine.
Maybe... I have no idea where I'm going with all of this, and I won't know until I try it. Hence my taking the plunge

@O.o.
I understand, no problem.
If you do something for the yubikey, i will be glad to see it because i use it too (on my pc).
