I think the facebook button and X/Twitter button should not be removed, but there could additionally also be buttons of other (open source friendly) platforms. Two reasons for this:-
I think it makes tactical sense to promte your ideas everywhere, even on platforms that you generaly dislike or that you disagree with (for example there is an official facebook account on X/Twitter and YouTube even through Meta probably wishes that both platforms will fail).

I think I also read some time ago, that it is good for search optimization to be linked with big websites.
But I also often ask myself, if anyone even uses this "share on social media" buttons, you see everywhere. xD So this is maybe a low priority.

Would be nice to add the more open platforms but again, who use this feature?

I disagree. I generally do mistrust websites that only promote Bigtech socials. Sorry.

While checking I found that I could enable ActivityPub protocol for this forum, meaning that you can follow anyone here from Mastodon rather easily, and also you can follow stuff from Mastodon here in this forum. The only problem is I currently did not find out how it should work
If you search for "NodeBB ActivityPub" though there is plenty of resources, maybe someone has more luck than me

@Voorstad thats up to you but honestly I did not even know these 2 icons are there. Its a default setting from NodeBB and so far nobody had any request about them. We will look into it.

Update: I need to allow any forum to be subscribeable from Mastodon. Now I can do this:
That should alert me about new posts in News forum on Mastodon. Maybe however it will not report all replies made lets see

@flohack wordpress has a similar plugin and it's kind of cool.
