      OK. Thanks.
This requires having a machine running Ubuntu if I am not mistaken, I cannot use my MacBook for those preliminary steps.
Will that work with a virtual machine running in VirtualBox? Out of curiosity, because I happen to have another (old) laptop running Ubuntu.

@gdegrez I don't have experience with SP Flash tool on a MacBook but it should work too (I don't know a good & clean place to download such tool either).

A VM should be good enough as well although usb port forwarding gives headaches usually.

IMO a live usb stick is way better (https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-create-a-usb-stick-on-macos#0) 🙂

            @advocatux

Followed the instructions. Got an error message.
Retried. Nothing happens (no progress on the scroll bar, 0 B/s download speed). And now, the tablet won't start any more.
I am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, I used the SP_Flash_Tool_exe_Linux_v5.1612.00.100.zip
Any way to get this tablet up and running?

@gdegrez Also read through this as a double check. It is for the phones but the method is the same. The file you need is in the link @advocatux gave you above.

                i've installed it using Ubuntu.
SP Flash didn't recognize the device, i had to select it manually.
Boot into fastboot and follow the instructions on SP Flash selecting manually the device.

@ratovsky Correction: the tablets still boots in Android. For once, I thought it didn't boot at all any more.
I retried, but I get the same problem.
The message is Connect BROM failed.
I think I've identified the problem, the ports on my ASUS laptop are USB 3.0 :-(((((((
I've got to find another computer to perform the operation, I can't do that on my MacBook either.

The brom error, is sometimes because you don't have a good adb, connection.
Some BQ flash_tool versions have a short timer set,and you repeatedly get the brom error, before your device can do anything.
Can you try with a different flash_tool.
I use a chuwi 14.1 lap pad. It has 3.0 usb and 2.0.,works for me on either
If you are brave enough to take the cover off,you could try with the battery disconnected, then the flash_tool is not getting ( feedback) from your device

Or remove the cover, disconnect the batteries,,then try
The cover will come off with plastic credit cards,no wires connected to the rear cover, it just unclipps, start furthest from on switch.

@gdegrez that's a well-known issue. You need to uninstall modemmanager in your computer. Please read that archive.org link that @Lakotaubp gave you to learn about it.

Edit to add the relevant part here for easier reading 🙂

With the latest versions of Ubuntu (14.04 and 14.10), the modemmanager package installed on the computer is not compatible with the MTK Flash Tool, so you will need to uninstall it first. This package is used to control the modem connection via USB. Any user configuration file will be maintained after uninstalling and installing the package. This means that we can reinstall the current configuration if required after using the tool.

Did that, and still get the same error (now running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS from a bootable USB stick on my MacBook). I guess the only remaining option is to remove the battery 😞

@advocatux Did a last try with the Asus running 10.04 LTS. After uninstalling modemmanager, it finally worked 🙂
                                Thanks to all.
It now just remains to update to the latest version.

Now, I've got problems with the installation of the new version using the UBports installer on the Macbook. The flashing images step stalls 😞
                                          The error message is
Sending boot.img FAILED, no such file or directory.
I can always restart on the Asus...
