Long swipe from left edge message stuck - new Nexus 5 install
-
Hello. Brand new install of Ubuntu on a Nexus 5 and in the first 30 seconds of using the phone, a "Long swipe from the left edge to open the Application Drawer" message appeared and is now stuck on the screen. It reappears after rebooting. Nothing seems to make it disappear. I used Ubports installer 0.8.1-beta for install and selected the stable version (don't remember the version). Any fixes? Thanks!

Did you try to swipe like said? -
@keneda Please reread my post. Thx.

@nigel-tufnel If the touch screen was working ok before and resting your finger on the far left of the screen and a slow swipe will not shift it I would try rerunning through the installer if fully powering of also does not work.

@lakotaubp Touch screen was working when I first loaded Ubuntu. I was poking around at the options when the Left swipe dialog came up and then got stuck. No amount of swiping makes it go away. After a reboot and typing in my preset passcode, it accepts the passcode and the left swipe dialog reappears and will not go away.
I tried rerunning the installer (0.8.2 beta with 16.04/stable) and it looked like things went smoothly until the initial reboot. Note that prior to running install, I verified that I was connected with ./fastboot devices. I was surprised to see it asking for my passcode and after entering the passcode, the Left swipe dialog reappeared with same stuck dialog. I repeated the install with the Wipe data checkbox clicked and same behavior.
How does one do a complete reinstall (such that it doesn't remember my passcode)? I would rather not completely reinstall the Andriod image and start over.
Thanks

@nigel-tufnel reboot to recovery and factory reset then reboot and reinstall with wipe option and this time install rc and try again. Using wipe should have removed everything though the first time. RC is safe to use so give it a try you can change back in to stable in system settings later if you wish.

I also tried going to recovery mode and wiping data and reset to factory defaults. That got it back to having no passcode. Set up the initial data (time zone, passcode, ...) and was trying to set the time (no SIM card yet) and the Left swipe dialog reappeared with same stuck behavior.

@lakotaubp I will give that a try. Disregard the message above as I only performed part of what you suggested. Thanks
-
@lakotaubp Tried everything you suggested. No luck. Everything was reset as expected and things seem to work but as soon as the Long swipe dialog reappears, it can't be swiped away. The swipe from top down dialog appeared earlier and it was possible to swipe that away. FYI - It says OS 16.04 2020-W50 under settings on the phone.
Any other options or time to give up? Thanks

@nigel-tufnel Two daft things if it's in a case remove it and try and if the screen rotates, rotate so in effect you are trying from the otherside. Just to clear up edge sensitivity. Can't think of anything else just now but don't give up yet. Someone else will have an idea I'm sure. Also it's Sunday and they are slow.

It might be worth the shot:
You'll have to be fast, but you can try to install UT Tweak Tool.
Then try to adjust edge detection, but I don't really understand those settings. -
@lakotaubp Thanks for the suggestion. We're making progress. I was able to swipe left once I rotated the phone to landscape mode. Additional experimentation yields that the left side (normal portrait) doesn't have swipe sensitivity but things work fine from the right side. When upside down portrait orientation, swiping right doesn't work but swiping left works. When in landscape, the left and right sides have what I would call normal sensitivity in both directions.
Additionally when in the text app, the "compose a new message by swiping up from the bottom of the screen" message doesn't swipe away no matter what the orientation is.
Are there any edge sensitivity settings or is this a hardware issue?
Thanks for all the help.

@nigel-tufnel
Answer came before you asked for itEdit: And oh it's probably a hardware issue.
It seems your touch screen has unresponsive spots.
Adjusting the edge detection might help though even if it won't solve the problem. -
Well I think I am going to give up and move on as adjusting the edge sensitivity with the UT tweak tool was no help. My phone must have hardware issues. The phone is too hard to use with the issues and I'm not sure I like the lack of a home button and back button in general.
Thanks for everyone's help.
