SMS and call audio not working
-
The telephony component ofono of Ubuntu Touch on Halium 9 ports (like the Pixel 3a) is known to have issues on US carriers. We don't know yet what exactly the problem is as we have little development involvement from US people.
-
@fredldotme Thanks for the response. Before I switch back to android is there anything I can do to help you or whoever is attempting to find this issue? (Stuff like post logs or something else that can be done by a low skilled user)
-
@freefrog I think we already received logs, it's just they're hard to follow. We don't yet know from which angle to look at it.
-
@fredldotme No pressure, but has anything been figured out with mms not working?
-
@dieharddan Not yet, sorry. Also my primary SIM card is in my Xperia X right now, will let you know when I had time testing MMS on the Pixel 3a.
-
@fredldotme Is there a way I could track when this issue is fixed?
-
@freefrog Hi, i am in Canada ... Which usually has pretty similar frequencies as usa.
My pixel 3a is running pretty well on 3g. (rough daily driver now for about a week).
Yes, you would need to enter apn info for both internet and mms. You can usually find this info online for your carrier. some apn settings are missing (at least for me. Eg: mmc) but sms and internet is working. Not sure about mms as most of my contacts are on signal.
I dont know of the proper repo/issues list to track the ofono problems...but ibwould be intwrested to know if find it ... Would obviously like to have 4g working.

@standupmobile Unfortunately as I learned earlier in the thread it's some kind of problem with something I don't understand. Changing the APN setting with info I found on the internet didn't work. I moved back to android for the time being a while ago and was wondering if there was a way to know when it is ready for me to come back to eliminate any guess work. If you had a website that you knew of with officially tested APN settings that might also be worth another try but I was under the impression that those are set automatically
-
@freefrog when it's fixed I will definitely talk about it in our Q&As, which happens every two weeks. Other than that we probably will also mention it in our Telegram channel.
-
@fredldotme I've implemented a workaround by NotKit that allows the phone to have stable telephony and SMS for a longer period of time. It will eventually run into the same problem but it's not within 24 hours but more in a few weeks. Should give us some time for a proper fix.
The workaround should be in the current devel channel releases.
-
@fredldotme Thanks for the update! If I was to run out of time in this workaround would I be able to restart it without reinstalling?
-
@freefrog sure, reinstalling shouldn't be necessary.
-
@standupmobile dose phone calls works fine? I have echo. Have you flashed Android with Ubuntu or you still have both?
-
@fruitkwan I'm sure I've tackled the echo issue before. It's possible the echo fix might need a first reboot after the initial installation. Did you try a reboot first?
-
@fredldotme You mean just reboot the phone? yes i did
-
Yes, phone seems OK. I had one person complain of echo - but may have been their side. Have had many other conversations where there was no complaint. I will test properly by swapping phones and report back...
-
@fredldotme I installed from the devel channel (using the latest installer) and all the previously mentioned problems persist. In addition following a reboot Bluetooth,WiFi, all the buttons, and the fingerprint sensor do not function and the cellular network settings have disappeared entirely (neither show up under rfkill though idk if that's standard behaviour).
-
@standupmobile Thank you. Would you mind sharing with me the steps you have taken? I am in Ottawa we can have a zoom call if you are ok with it.
-
@freefrog Reinstalled with stable branch then updated to devl through settings, all those other problems have disappeared but the original wireless problems persists
-
What carrier are you on? APN settings might not be set properly. easy to find correct ones for your carrier online - If you are Bell, I will post mine.
I also have better stability if I set the Cell Data to use 3G - although occasionally even it gets stuck in a cycle of fast on-off (as seen by the indicator cycling from 3G (or L) to an empty wifi sumbrella.
Also note: Its best to reboot after the APN / 3G/4G changes ... but reboot and power-off still have a bug so you have to repeat them more than once - You should (I think) need to cycle through and see a "bootloader unlocked" warning message .. not just the ubuntu Touch splash.
