Hi there, I'm new to Ubuntu Touch but got my hands on a spare OnePlus 5T device and would like to see whether I can at some point switch to this device for daily use with UT. Of course I will need access to some Android apps for this to work in practice so I wanted to install Waydroid as well, which failed for me, some packages seem to be missing.
Before sinking (too) much time in to this, I wanted to ask here first:- Is anyone using Waydroid on this device?
- If so, what are the required steps for making it work or a direction to explore for trying to make it work?
- Or, are there some issues with this and you would discourage me from trying to run Waydroid with this device?
Any feedback is highly appreciated!
What I did so far is fairly easily explained:
- I installed Ubuntu Touch on my OnePlus5T using the UBports installer (everything seems to work fine)
- I followed the steps suggested here: https://forums.ubports.com/topic/6764/anbox-halium-or-waydroid-no-support-for-ut/11 but got the feedback
ERROR: Binder node "binder" for waydroid not found
after runningwaydroid init

@ra You need to make shure your kernel is ready to run WayDroid also and need to have the correct patches.
Best what you could do would be ask Florian, if he has done this patches..
-
So, i understand waydroid is not functional yet on the oneplus 5T?
-
@paju1986 Ask Florian he make kernel ready for WayDroid.
-
@Flohack Could you please let us know whether these patches are done for the Op 5 and 5t port?
-
@moem I will try to find time. Unfortunately now Telegram broke our TELEports app and I need to focus on that for the next evenenings
-
@flohack Of course! First things first.
Thanks in advance for looking at this when you get the chance, it's appreciated. -
I also tried to install Waydroid the same way and i got the same error
-
@paju1986 I guess the Kernel patch is not yet fixed.
-
I will try to test it this weekend.
After over a year its time to send back the OP5T to the original owner. So, Waydroid patches will be the last thing I can contribute at the current moment, lets see

@flohack any luck?

What does that mean for :
- The future development of Ubuntu Touch for the OnePlus 5T ?!
- The future development of WayDroid for the OnePlus 5T ?!
I am considering the phone as my next daily Ubuntu Touch phone!
-
@nero355 well I do not have access to that phone sooner or later anymore, so, if anything is needed someone else needs to do that, I cannot tell of course if a developer will step up to this.

@ra JFI This should now be sorted with todays devel update.
-
@lakotaubp doesnt work for me still, hangs on starting container and do nothing
-
@paju1986 works on my OP5 following this https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5907/open-ubuntu-touch-to-all-android-applications/114 and giving it time at each stage.
-
@paju1986 And, as @Lakotaubp did mention, you first have to upgrade to the last devel image before running the installation process (Settings => Updates => Channel => Devel => Install)
-
@stanwood Thanks you! confirmed working now!!

On my OnePlus 5T, I can now install Waydroid using the Waydroid helper app and it seems to work fine. Thanks for making this happen @Flohack , I will now start messing with it to see what Waydroid already can do on this device
