Verizon calling & SMS working?
-
@triguy Verizon Data works now but not calls. No projected date on when that will be fixed yet (VoLTE).
If you must use verizon, there are temporary solutions in the works. For instance, by using Jumpchat you can get SMS and MMS functioning now. Linphone for 64bit is in testing now. It works for some services but not UDP connections. Still being worked on.
The Pinephone does work with VoLTE now
-
So you can get SMS and MMS going now by making a web app with JMPchat or one of the XMPP apps if you do not have a need for calls
-
@rocket2nfinity Darn. I didn’t realize VoLTE needs to work for calls on Verizon. You’d think you could call without it. Hopefully one day we get this device fully supported. It’s just about the only American phone thats reasonable to still find that supports Ubuntu. I can’t wait to fully switch and move away from iOS and Android. My phone doesn’t even connect to towers. Says “denied” even with copying my APN settings from Android.

@triguy Pixel 2XL, Oneplus 5T, OnePlus 6 and 6T are excellent options for US users along with P3a/XL
Verizon is VoLTE only. All the others will be in the coming year. So VoLTE is high on the to do list with a solution being worked on now.
Verizon itself will block you if you are not using an 'approved' handset. Same as AT&T. The way around that is to use an MVNO such as Red Pocket or US Mobile.

@rocket2nfinity Do all devices have the same issue with Verizon? Is there an issue I can track to see the progress on VoLTE? In my region, Verizon is the only viable option unfortunately. Maybe I can even have my device removed from the blacklist if I ask the Verizon employees.
-
@triguy Others have tried, but you are welcome to try again. Verizon and AT&T have their authorized lists on their websites.
If the device you have is on their list, it will function with data on their network now. The forum here or the UT Telegram channel would be the best place to keep an eye on the VoLTE development. When that gets worked out, it will be for Mediatek devices first.
If you require VoLTE now, maybe consider the Pinephone. It's not perfect, and it's UT build is behind compared to the halium ports, but it works with VoLTE now.
Another option would be Droidian with your current, or another Verizon approved handset.
-
Are there any updates for this issue? If I switch to a carrier that uses Verizon's network will it be an issue too?
-
@ssc Still working on it. Currently incoming VoLTE calls and sms (not mms) are working on P2XL and OP6T on all three US networks. Stay tuned for progress....
Would love to have as many people as possible call their UT devices and let us know if calls come through with network indicator staying on "L" which would mean they can receive VoLTE calls. Same with calling out.
P3a/XL users - you are out of luck as your porter switched off all IMS stuff due to a bug.
-
@rocket2nfinity Ok. Do you know anything about the bug on the pixel 3a? Does this mean I also can't use a service that uses the Verizon network too (like Ting)?
-
-
@ssc That's being troubleshot now.
-
@rocket2nfinity Ok. That is good. If the VoLTE issue is resolved in a matter of months, I can wait. I am exploring using a dumb phone right now anyways.
-
Just got the new Volla -- same issue with ATT and VoLTE.
-
@alyosha
2G and 3G drop by providers in USA, and VoLTE not working on UT for now, is device agnostic. -
@rocket2nfinity Hey Rocket, do you have any more insight into VoLTE support for the Pixel 3a? In this thread you mention a bug being troubleshot last year.
-
@bhibb No change. No updates. Sorry
-
@rocket2nfinity no problems, thanks for your reply.
-
FYI, I get SMS/MMS and calls using T Mobile on the Nexus 5, even though it is an older phone that only gives me Edge cell bandwidth than LTE which sucks but it's better than nothing. I hate to say it but switching carriers may help. Ting mobile uses T-Mobile service and its cheaper so that might help. I'm using my Nexus 5 as my emergency phone until I get my Pixel 4a which I hope to flash LineageOS on it.

is there any sort of ETA? just Curious.
-
@dj-finney There is no ETA because this is not a clear cut issue. There is ongoing investigation as tonwhat is possible for what devices. There is consultation and dialogue between several mobile linux projects to arrive at a solution. But crackng this is not vey simple.
