OTA-1 Focal (yes that is right).

The announcement says PinePhone and PineTab are updated independently. the images for PinePhone are still for 16.04.
What does "independently" mean, in a practical sense, for users? Will there be a 20.04 image for PinePhones? Is there a schedule if 20.04 is being ported? Is the PinePhone image effectively abandoned?
-
@newguy PP and PPP use a completly different method to install and the original PP has had to change how it installs 20.04 to 16.04. Both can now run a very basic version of 20.04 at present ( no sim detection for one). A blog on 20.04 on PP and PPP is being prepared and should be out later this week.
In the mean time https://t.me/utonpine for all things UT and Pine. -
Hi! I'm just a user who'd like to try out Ubuntu Touch on a Pixel 3a and I've been waiting for a few months for the Focal based version to arrive, because I did not want to start off with something based in the year 2016, as Xenial is to my understanding.
Now https://ubports.com/blog/ubports-news-1/post/ubuntu-touch-ota-1-focal-release-3888 states, that I should follow the instructions given (for sargo) on https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/sargo/#installerDownload.
Sadly there are a few things that I am doubtful of.
-
I can see there only 3 versions of Xenial based releases. Where is the Focal one?
-
According to the instructions there for UT Xenial, I would have to downgrade my device first of all to a factory image dating from 2019. I this still true in regard to UT Focal?
-
If yes, does UT contain recent firmware as LinageOS does? If no, doesn't this affect the security of the device?
-
Is there a way to get specific help other than via Telegram? (I want to try UT in order to escape mass surveillance by Google and the like as much as possible and I certainly will not use a service like Telegram, who insists to get my phone number and rip personal data = "contacts" of other people who have have trusted them to me.)
Thank you!

@talpa Follow the instructions for the exact version of android need in the device instructions. Once that is done you can use the installer. This gets the device partitions correct for UT.
To see the 20.04 version use the settings menu and allow hidden channels. You will then see all the 20.04 channels.
As for help you can use this section https://forums.ubports.com/category/114/20-04-focal-fossa of the Forum if you don't want to use Telegram. Which is your choice. -
@UBportsNews Some apps are supported in 20.04 and some are not. Would it be better to remove/uninstall all apps while still on 16.04, switch channel to 20.04 stable, and then reinstall whatever apps are available in the OpenStore?
Or is a clean install with wipe recomended using the installer?
-
@Ian Logic dictates that it is always better to start from a completely healthy base (clean install), even if it is not compulsory.
In any case, that's what I'll do with my Volla when I decide to go to focal, OTA-2 probably, because hotspot doesn't work currently on Volla, and OTA-2 will be much more stable.
-
@Ian as @domubpkm said really. I have tried with a mix rearly on and it can and does create issues. Best to think of it as moving to a new OS, back up everything first then move.
There is now a migration script to make the move easier just from System Settings. I have not tried it so cannot say how well it works. Maybe @Flohack can give more info on that. -
@UBportsNews
Does that mean FP4 with UT preinstalled is soon to reach the FairPhone (and/or UBports) shop ? -
Has the Bluetooth problem been corrected?
-
wifi sign in using custom security protocols is still broken in OTA-1 please fix...
-
@keneda Not just yet, more testing needs to be done.
-
@Lumpology There is a link in the release blog iirc to report issue etc. Please use this then the issue will not get lost as it might on the Forum.
-
@mw4jet Bluetooth is a bit of a bugbear. For me it works quite well on FP4 devel for most things but answering calls when the sound does not appear to route correctly which is a major issue.
-
@Lakotaubp I suppose the bluetooth issue is a minor glitch seeing as the phone can't be used on 4G here in the US anyway

In the update settings there are two stable channels (driftsversjon). Is the "other" one Focal? Does that mean that my Xiaomi Mi A2 is ready for Focal, or should I wait for an "official" anouncement? This transition is both scary and exciting...!
