    • Talk to the Non-Geek People

I have installed a couple of different Linux OS on desktops and laptops and I have installed Touch on several Nexus 5s for me and some family members, so I am no greenhorn. I am, however, no expert either and learning the cell phone side of things has been fun but tedious.

My point is, this site is written and maintained by Ubuntu Touch geeks, and I say that with all the love in my heart, but you have to learn to write and speak to people who just want a phone but are tired of the add tracking and looking for some anonymity.

For example, in your documentation, there is no discussion on sims cards or carriers. There should be more information on what carriers work as well as the potential impact of VoLTE on the older phones.

Your user docs... I am not sure who the audience is there, but for someone totally new to Ubuntu and not technically savy, I would close the tab and go back to my Android phone. You don't even mention how to navigate or discuss any of the settings. Under "Daily Use" you talk about creating a container. The very first sentance under RUN DESKTOP APPS is "Libertine allow you to use standard desktop apps..." Great! What the heck fire is Libertine? Then you go on to say you can manage installation of the desktop apps through settings.... but what happened to Libertine? I thought that was going to be used for standard desktop apps? Then you jump into creating containers. Why do I have to create a container and what is a container?

I know... this OS has to be installed on an older phone so technically savy people have to be the ones installing this, and yes, I was able to figure out Libertine and play around with that, but average people want a phone that works. More and more of these average people are beginning to understand privacy and want out of the tracking madness. Your UBPorts software is great! I learned to install Touch on a Nexus 5 within a few minutes. People who come here need to know it's easy to do.

If you want more people to be using Ubuntu Touch then you have to make it more accessible for average people. If you are just looking for developers and phone manufacturers, then you need to spell that out. Figure out who your target audience is and talk to them. And stop with the geek speak. All it does is scare people away. 🙂

I first joined up and used the Nexus 5 and I loved it. What a great little phone. The install process was easy and it worked great. Unfortunately, as you all know, the providers got rid of 3G and there were apparently going to be issues getting UT to even work after the switch. I was extremely disappointed. Not in the efforts of all of you, but sad that I was no longer going to be able to use UT

I came back a year or so later and discovered you had added support to the Pixel 3a. I just installed it and am running it now and it runs even better than the N5. I am just so impressed with all the work all of you do here and I am so happy to have my UT back.

Thank you all for all of your hard work.

@totalsonic I am currently using tmobile as well for my Nexus 5 and it works fine. I just ordered a Pixel 3a to try out, but I am not expecting any problems.

@pulsar33 Thanks for the reply... and no, I figured out Libertine just fine, but my post was made in the Marketing Incubator section and is a suggestion for promoting the OS. I have always loved digging in and learning about things so this OS is right up my alley.

I have loaded Ubuntu Touch onto several N5s and have given them to family members and friends. I have no where to direct them to get more information on Touch than here. If they knos nothing about linux, Ubuntu or Touch then coming here should be helpful. I am just saying, if you looked at this sight as someone who knows nothing about any of this, they would probably move on and not bother as it is overwhelming.

All I am suggesting is to provide these new people with a place on the site to go for help/getting started, etc. Keep all the geeky stuff and forums and dev talk. Not suggesting anything changes or goes away. IMO, if you want to promote Touch, you have to have a "safe" place for newbies to come and learn without being intimidated.

@moem Lol.... feeling a little stupid here. Thanks for pointing out my American superiority complex. 😉

      Yes, I meant the US.

    • RE: Hopefully Useful Tips

I didn't have any problems with my 3a after I flashed Android 9 (Sargo).

      https://developers.google.com/android/images#sargo

It's very easy to do. During the Flash it gives you the option to unlock the bootloader. After I flashed it, UBPorts picked up my 3a right away and it installed pretty easily after that.

@nero355 Again, I will just say that I posted this in the Marketing Incubator forum and it is a suggestion to try and get more people using Touch.

I am not suggesting changing anything, just to add some easy to understand/follow instructions for how to use Touch.

    • Question about Carriers and Service

I was big into the Nexus 5 and UT and and later the 3A and used them for a long time on T-Mobile until they killed 3G. I recently learned VoLTE is now working on UT... So I guess my question is, it seems like all the phones with UT work on networks/carriers with LTE; Is that correct or are there restrictions?

Sorry if this has been answered before, but I have been looking for a while and have been unable to find a definitive answer and I would love to start using UT again.

      Thanks!

@flohack I guess I am still confused about all of this. I have a Pixel 3a that is loaded with Android (My UT phone is a Nexus 5) and I am on T-Mobile. I received notification that my Nexus 5 would no longer work, but they said my other phones will be fine. (Wife has a pixel 3), so wouldn't UT still work on the 3a?

@applee I don't have this problem with my N5, but I will play around with it some more.

I still think the N5 has the best UT integration out there. It is such a great little phone. Too bad it won't be able to handle VoLTE so I am trying to switch to the 3a.

Regardless, thanks for the tips. I appreciate it!

    • RE: Cannot receive SMS/MMS

Has anyone had any recent luck with TMO? I have a 3a that is working beautifully but I can't get the MMS to work. I have read all the threads here but most of the suggestions are for previous OTAs, My 3a is currently running OTA 21 and I have tried legacy and current APN settings. I have a 3a with TMO and Android and I copied the MMS settings from there and still nothing.

I am concerned it is related to the whole VoLTE/5G situation but regardless, I am not sure what to do at this point.

    • Bootloader unlocked?

I was able to install UT on a Pixel 3a with just a little angst, but it up and running successfully. The only question I have is every time I turn on the phone, it gives me the "Bootloader is unlocked warning". Is this a permanent thing?
