    • RE: UBports for BQ E5 : all you need to know

      Hello,
Here is the abstract of the install process made for my daugther on a BQ E5 Ubuntu Edition
To succeed, we widely did otherwise than explained in the official informations.
This is why I think that this could be usefull for you.

We started here and had a close look to this video. We (hardly, because it's fleeting) got a false information about how to go in bootloader mode. We have known later that this was not usable for BQ E5 ... But let's tell the story.

According to this, that, then that, and finally that we didn't know what to load. We finally found this. Well ! Having Mint 18.3, we downloaded ubports-installer_0.1.12-beta_amd64.deb and tried to launch. But my desktop is 32 bits, not 64 so it failed. I tried also Appimage and looked to snappy without succes. So I decided to install a Mint 18.3 64 bits fresh disk and was able (some time later) to install the deb file ...

      What did not work :
Following the instruction of UBports installer, keeping in mind the video seen above, there was no detection. We tried a manual selection, launched the install process but were not able to switch to bootloader mode. As we discovered later here we switched in Factory Mode instead.
What is not clear too in the video is if the device must be on or off when connecting it.
We tried several times without luck, and saw that the "Developper Mode" was not persistent after some reboot so beware about that.

What succeeded (with UBports-installer and Mint 18.3 64 bits) :

      • Power on the BQ E5 and set Developper Mode (SystemPreferences/About/DevelopperMode)
      • Open a terminal and type adb devices : this launches the adb daemon
      • Connect the BQ E5 (always powered on) to the desktop
      • Type adb devices once more : the device is listed
      • A question appears on the BQ E5 with a key : you have to grant the connexion
      • At this point, launch UBports installer : quick automatic detection !...
      • The installer displays a "Switch to UBports" option : select it then install
      • The BQ E5 is switched to Bootloader Mode automatically
      • Then follow the indications (the password requested is the one of your desktop, not the one of your BQ)
      • 12 files Downloaded (the first one is long with ADSL), then 13 files pushed to the device (quicker)
      • Then the device reboots and installs the files (about 5 minutes), then reboots once more running UBports
        You're done !

      Hope this can help

I don't like scopes and never used them.
I want a desktop with only my favorite picture(s).
I'd be very happy if the background image could be a slideshow, switching every 10 or 15 minutes (for example)
It's exactly what I have for my Desktop PC with Cinnamon. No garbage on the screen and powerful menus

Maybe is time to drop some old device to newer one.

This is a totally irresponsible idea at a time when the danger of destroying the planet through over-consumption is so high and finally recognized by a growing number of people.

      Desperate 😞

    • RE: Linux Mobile A Reality Check

      Hello,

I don't understand what is the problem. I've already written in two places here what should be at least a Linux Mobile, according to what a smartphone is nowadays.

My phone is a phone so :

      • Phone app
      • Contacts app (at least with local database)
      • Messages app (SMS, MMS)
      • Clock app (with alarms)

My phone is built over Linux so :

      • Terminal app
      • Filemanager app
      • Preferences app
      • System update app

My phone has I/O interfaces so :

      • Camera app (photo, video)
      • Galery app (photo, video)
      • Play and Record sounds apps <= partially
      • Display GPS coordinates app (textual, no map) <= partially

My phone is smart and connected so :

      • Calendar app (at least with local database)
      • Calculator app
      • Notes app
      • Web browser app
      • Mail client app
      • Openstore app

I removed or adjusted some points that were not consensual.
Many users will says "I want this or that" but here above is the pure simple definition of what should work immediately without drawbacks after installing a Linux Mobile Operating System.

What is the status today for Touch or Others ?
      Best regards
      Pulsar33

NOTA : Ubuntu Touch OTA15 from Canonical had a ALL OK status for that

      Hello guru
I don't know but someone will certainly answer you.
I hope removing someone's posts is not possible as it would create unconsistancy in the threads.
Morevover, you have posted some messages I consider interesting.
What is often possible on forums is that the nickname of leaving users is replaced by "guest".

    • RE: How do I copy files to and from my phone & PC with uFTP & WifiTransfer? [Solved]

      @Opolork : Hello

      WifiTransfer :

      • acts like a server => use Filezilla on the laptop
      • the Filezilla UI allows multiple selection of files and folders and make things easy
      • I experienced "silent errors" of transfer, often for a bunch of photos which is easy to detect
=> you always must verify the integrity of what you have transfered

      uFtp :

      • acts like a client => use Filezilla Server on the laptop
      • I never succeeded to transfer a folder or multiple files from Laptop to Phone
      • I never experiment "silent errors"
      • uFtp makes a temporary copy of all what you send in his folder. This is a huge drawback !

      Confinement :
WifiTransfer and uFtp are confined as usual so they can only access to the .local/share/<appname>/ folder.
The only choice is to use UT file manager and enable show hidden files and full access.
Using Terminal, you can create symbolic links for easier access :

      • ln -s ~/.local/share/wifitransfer.sil/ ~/Ftp
      • ln -s ~/.local/share/ftpmanager.costa/ ~/uFtp

      Firewall :
Depends on your PC OS and configuration ... Might be necessary to modify.

      Hope this helps

    • RE: WifiTransfer not connecting to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

@lakotaubp : no problem, this is a local only exchange and WiFitransfer changes the password each time you launch it 🙂
This is by the way one of the boring things with WiFitransfer. I use mainly uFtp instead (but that one needs to install a server on the laptop)

      @dtarrant :
It seems more complicated because it is more generic and powerfull. This suggest was to verify what's working or not and you can do it ...

      Use this :
      0_1534087504922_screenshot20180812_170244081.jpg

      To configure that :

      @dtarrant : Hello
Please read again what I said to you sometimes ago.
Maybe the FTP client of Nautilus in 18.04 has an issue or a more protected way to connect to the server, I don't know. However, FTP works with clients and servers and you have several solutions, at least to test and detect which element is faulty. For exemple, give a try to Filezilla Client on your laptop. This one should connect to WiFitransfer.
      Good luck

The only thing I posted was in accordance with your points 2 and 3. It was :
@pulsar33 said in Telegram - some history, and vs. Signal:

It's not my fault if the thread is going off topic

@lakotaubp Yes I got a popup and I didn't think it was a good idea to follow the advice. As said above, a forum has to be optimized to retrieve the information you're looking for and too many threads make this difficult or impossible. I you search "Signal" your get more than 400 entries. Do you think this is a good thing ?
If you're looking only for fresh information, use chat or facebook or similar social application. A forum should be a reference database, not a diary and unfortunately, it's not the case here 😞

      Hello,
"Thread too old" : what a curious way to consider a forum.
A forum is not a chat, it is a place where information can be capitalized and retrieved by search commands. Too many subjects kills information ...

Anyway, Signal's time has come because of WhatsApp's ultimatum! The number of users increases exponentially

    • RE: Installing Ubuntu Touch on Fairphone 2

      Hello
If you want be sure to get rid of this question, you may read this information and probably some Fairphone forum threads.

      Abstract
Why does my Fairphone 2 not come rooted by default? Do you provide a separate rooting solution for Fairphone OS?
We always try to find the best compromise for different users. Enabling root access by default poses a security risk for less advanced users. So we decided against it. It is also a requirement of third parties whose software we ship with the phone.

The Fairphone Open OS is an official alternative with root access available
This operating system is built from the open source code released by Fairphone via code.fairphone.com. It only contains open source software with the exception of the proprietary drivers you will need to properly run the hardware. The operating system is based on the Android Open Source Project (often referred to as AOSP) so it does not include the Google Mobile Services.

This operating system enables you to activate root access through the Developer options.

Hope this can help, but I'm sure that other people here have already installed UT on FP2. Someone could have more relevant information ...

    • RE: Continuation of rpi effort and how to test

      @Aury88 : some news about #371 distribution
Starting as usual, terminal display is correct but graphical display is garbage as previously.
I'm connected to a 4k Samsung TV (3840x2160) with a standard HDMI wire.
I've not tested in 1920x1080 but previous tests have shown no difference with a Full HD monitor.
So, after some time and automatic reboot, I've seen the same grey lines on white page screen, with some pixels blinking.
Fortunately, the PrintScreen function has captured a 4k snapshot of the display and it is correct as you can see below (I've reduced the image size for forum convenience). So it is definitely a problem of bad parameters in the frame buffer (correct) to video output (garbage) process (I don't know the code breakdown).
      Good evening

      @augustblake :
There could be a simplest way with adb, I don't know.
Here is how I did with simple means, assuming that Terminal is installed :
Put your desired hosts file in Memory Card's /Documents folder.
This file must include the lines of the original hosts file of your phone

      Stop all radio interfaces

Insert the memory card. Launch the Terminal.

      ls /media/phablet => XXXX-YYYY

      sudo mount -o remount,rw /
      cd /etc
      sudo mv hosts hosts_org
      sudo cp /media/phablet/XXXX-YYYY/Documents/hosts .

Ignore "cannot create regular file" message if any
      Restart and check

Check twice when you enter the line sudo mount ...
