    • RE: New websites

Following up on our conversation yesterday

0 Establish the name. Do it once, and not in conjunction with "UBPorts foundation".
1 Get the moniker right. "A whole mobile operating system experience, that is yours.
      Only have "800+ volunteers".
2 Get a screenshot of the desktop in. Would suggest using the birds https://ubuntu-touch.onestein.eu/web/image/64602/background_home-2.jpg and then imposing a fading image onto there.
3 Have the "Get Ubuntu Touch" type buttton in a greener colour. Current one looks reddish on bad panels.
4 Establish what sets UBPorts apart.

      Sleek and secure
      The best of both worlds.

      Copylefted libre software
Use, explore, change, and share — with all.
      … [Expandable info]

      5 Establish opposition to alternatives.
The banner that says "Designed to last" could say:
      Redesigned to last
Your mobile device can receive software upgrades for many more years to come.
Bring your phone back to life.

6 Image of connecting said old phone to a screen to use it as a computer, with a desktop showing an app.

      1. Remove the CoC and every mention of it.

At this point I think the case is made.

      The installer pages

      "Stuck on your default OS?"
This ties someone elses OS to the user with "yours". "Default" lends credibility to it.
"A whole mobile operating system experience, that is yours" does better, but reusing the already established moniker wins points.

      move to "copylefted libre software"

I think the confusion over calling Ubuntu Touch "UBPorts" is that it would logically follow that
      The "UBPorts Installer" installs "UBPorts".
Having it be "Ubuntu Touch/installer" allows saying "About" rather than "About Ubuntu Touch"

Drop "It's simple". Make it look simple.
Show screenshots/an animation of the whole process.

"Command line tool" → "Command-line tool".
Drop every menion of "we", "you can" and so on.
      Line-shift at "Select the appropriate".
      Mac → macOS
      deb → .deb
      snap → Snap

      Remove the exclamations

enable developer mode → turn on developer mode

Get the mascot off the logos of other OSes.
Align the download symbols rightwards and the icons leftwards.

      Github → GitHub

will enable you → lets you

      Have one selection of downloads.

      smart-phones → smartphones
      Issues tracker → Issue tracker
      & → and

      Email → E-mail

Don't hide the questions behind clicks.

      Support A Device → Support a Device
Report a Bug → Report bugs
      Fund Development → Fund development

Between the lot of us we can really make this shine.
https://ubuntu-touch.io has said "focussed" for quite some time, so it is all about honing the details and getting to the point with the fewest amount of distractions. 🙂

    • RE: change the ubuntu touch logo

Yes it looks like it is "updated", and that is because
most modern things are soulless representations of their prior art.
Canonical rolled out yet another attempt at recreating itself.

It wants to sell you things, and it is a closely knit business-first venture.
It has little to nothing to do with what UBPorts is doing.
It wasn't so much that they tried to find somewhere new to go, they were already there
      and the logo didn't match.

Their own guidelines say to use colours to represent community. Their colour is orange.
This means the community is around the project, not inside of it. Again a question of alignment.
The newest logo looks looks left-aligned by mistake, which was a smaller problem in the first attempt to recreate it.

The square and negative space logo is already out of date.
It is a cheap trick to get as much real-estate out of available (often square) space available.
It works if you can own the colour, and it is a question of making sure "brand awareness" hits often and hard. No elegance to it at all. Not saying it doesn't work, but that is what it is.
Rip away the gimmicks and it is evident how poor an attempt it is.

The newest logo has no acuity.
There is now what looks like a compound curve because of the edge smoothing next to the faces, which is the entire thing to avoid in the first place.
This happens when you don't understand design, and you don't understand the design you are working with.
The size diminishes, it is harder to make out, and the air and composition of the elements are now gone.

Without the stopgap logo in between, the same generational corruption is now total.

It is pretty bad when a stock-logo when searching for "three people in circle logo" is better than two attempts at changing something that worked.
      alt text

Logically the next iteration will be three people leaning all the way in for a time-out pep-talk amongst themselves.

That or they understand to make the hands two smaller balls at each side, so it looks like someone is actually holding hands and not hunched over each-other.
Or the circle gets fatter, and it is just cut-outs for heads in two curved cutouts for each head.
Effectively the "hands" just grow, to the same width as the original logo.
My money is on this one since it has even less entropy, and in less than 5 years.

    • RE: I wanna go home

When these "modern" OS-es start, the clean desktop is shown,
meaning the user knows it is there, and for some reason the starting state is off limits if there is one or more programs open.

      elementaryOS also does this.
Even the keyboard shortcut to show the desktop is removed.
The section isn't even there anymore.

Would be interesting to see what kind of problems people think they are solving by implementing this.

It is 100% against convention of anyone touching a computer or device the last 30 years.
The upside seems to be not accidentally minimizing something you are working on.

It is also not how the system the user is familiar with and is using has functioned in the past. For my own sake I will say this makes me think of something I know I can use, into something where I think I can't figure it out and no change was needed.
And no, it just isn't possible anymore. No explanation.

The mind compartmentalizes information in structural hierarchies, and the spatial awareness to keep track of this is something you can do with cognition, but the ability to look at a clean slate actually has function.
It is the closest thing you get to seeing where your files are by default.

Yes, that place someone decided no files are to be shown,
before they decided file hierarchy is something the user shouldn't do.

There is a serenity to having just a clean slate to go back to.
It is as familiar, and not having what you are doing visible on the screen is useful.

It also has the benefit of vested interest and familiarity in that the user often changes the desktop. Thus making it their machine.

      @Capsia

      Very good points.

"An operating system where nobody has more power than you."
      is good for the moniker.
Different right off the bat. It piques the interest of why and how,
and then it is volunteers and values from there.
Ties into copylefted libre software, and then the explanation thereof.

I think the https://ubuntu-touch.onestein.eu/web/image/64602/background_home-2.jpg could be upright if that is what it takes to get the proper insight for what is going on at the desktop.
Without the internal "on-screen" line, if that is OK for the author.

Dropping "UBPorts" from what is then just "Installer" makes sense. Having other OS alternatives behind "other OSes" in the actual installer also makes sense when downloaded from Ubuntu-touch.io.
      "Ports installer" maybe?
Harking back to the main idea being to buy devices preloaded with a good OS.

"Command line tool" → "Command-line tool".

      deb → .deb
      snap → Snap

      Remove the exclamations
