@keneda How is cropping photos going for you?

I use the edit feature of the gallery app for that, works fine here.

Can you also resize for posting on the forum? Can you crop and resize screenshots?

@keneda How is cropping (and resizing) photos (and screenshots) going for you?

You took 'do not care' out of context. They do not care about downgrading like is possible with a desktop OS or AOSP projects. You can still download and install the first ever Ubuntu desktop image. You can get old versions of Lineage at least for a couple of versions back. The OS is supposed to be about giving us the choice of what we run.

Devs are rarely on this forum. They prefer to communicate via blackholes where knowlege is not indexed and searchable on the web. Like Discord, Matrix, Telegram etc etc etc. That way they get to answer the same questions repeatedly and anyone looking for the answer must ask rather than search the web.

You can publicly search years and years of Linux kernel mailing lists without any accounts and find all kinds of information on Linux development, but nothing like that for UT development because it is locked away and not indexed. Feels like a step backwards from mailing lists which were honestly terrible but still better than the blackholes being used now.

Sorry for the rant. I'll ltake my leave now.

  • RE: The camera-app is crashing!

@keneda Because nothing improved with OTA-16 while other things broke. Then with having no way to downgrade back to OTA-15 one can not test newer version to see if the problems have been fixed. This lack of being able to downgrade the OS or apps is a serious problem and the developers do NOT care. They want to make the choice for you, just like google decides how your Android phone should be.

  • RE: Halium 9 / CI + OTA build

    @TotalRando
Start in fastboot mode and run fastboot getvar all from your host and look for current-slot. It will be either a or b

EDIT: fastboot getvar current-slot may be easier.

Then use fastboot --set-active=a or fastboot --set-active=b to set the active slot to the opposite slot as you found it currently was set. Then follow the instructions for installing UT and it will install to the slot you just set.

EDIT: The latest UBports Blog mentions that Lineage encrypts the home directory by default which means you will not be able to share data between OS's and it could cause other unknown issues.

  • RE: Freezes and reboots with sim card inserted

@jhackler Since I do not have the same device I can not be of much help.

Since no one here seems to be able to help and with this being a community device the developer may not see your request here so I would ask in the issue tracker in the device repo which I see is this one https://gitlab.com/ubports/community-ports/android9/sony-xperia-10/sony-kirin/-/issues

I based my original answer off of the Official page for the device which only lists the Xperia 10 with the SDM630 https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/kirin/

@jhackler I do not see the Xperia 10 Plus in the list of supported devices. I am surprised you even got it installed. It uses a different CPU and GPU than the Xperia 10

  • RE: Sony Xperia 1 Mark II...

    @commandersozo

    Please read https://docs.ubports.com/en/latest/porting/

    1. Unlikely. It needs a Lineage OS port first, then that turned into a Halium port before you can port Ubuntu Touch. Current UT ports are based off of Halium 7.1 and 9 which is Android 7.1 and 9. So with that phone having Android 11 it is really unlikely unless you really know what you are doing.

    2. That depends on how you define stable?
      Doesn't crash? Not too long.
Has every feature? Keep following to find out when at least one phone actually has everything working and then you will know.

    3. IMHO Anbox is nothing more than a gimick. It is terrible right now and with all these Android 9+ phones having A/B partitions, dual boat is far easier and actually works. Just be sure to install a degoogled OS on the other partition and never use OTA updates on the Android one.
I do not think any UT phone has true Full Camera Support with everything you get on Android with the same phone.
Convergence is not as useful as it sounds currently.

I think the fastest phones right now being ported are the Oneplus 6/6T, Pocophone F1 and then I think it is the Pixel 3 series. The Oneplus 6/6T, Pocophone are a community devices and is not ready for daily use unless you are willing to have things not work. The Pixel 3 series is much closer as it is being developed by the core team. But again it will take time before being 100% if it is ever reached.

  • RE: Sony Xperia 10 (kirin)

@jhackler I never use sudo to run fastboot.

Since you are on linux and if your twrp file is actually called twrp.img and it is in Downloads you need to put a ./ in front of it so it knows to find twrp.img in the current directory.

But to make sure try it like this. Enter fastboot boot in the terminal and then drag the twrp file into the terminal from the file manager to get the full path and the exact name correct. You can also use copy in the file manager and paste in the terminal to get the full path and file name.

This is a known issue and it is shown in the demo videos and mentioned in many posts about the first broken 6 and 6T GSI release. It may be fixed in the new release but no one on here other than the developer has manged to install the latest version.

  • RE: Oneplus6 keeps shutting down

@hekathegreat That is the old very broken build that uses a 32bit filesystem on a 64bit phone and the video driver goes black but the phone stays on in the back ground. There is a newer build with a 64bit file system but it has other bugs. https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5831/halium-9-ci-ota-build/

The documentation for the 6/6T is fragmented and the one you linked to seems abandoned. I wish I could help more but I have given up on trying UBports on my 6T. I have PostmarketOS on it as a mini tablet with no phone capabilities. It is amazing since it is actual linux you can compile almost anything on as if it were an arm laptop.

  • RE: Ringing volume and other issues

Is it possible this is not a device bug but rather an OS quirk? If you are in an app using audio and press the volume buttons they control the volume for that app type. If you press the volume keys while nothing is running it adjusts the ring volume (at least it seems to on my oneplus one). Now for the real quirk, the buttons still adjust the volume while the phone is asleep. To test this turn the volume all the way down, press the power button to put it to sleep then press the volume up ten times followed by the power button. You will see the on-screen volume level and it will be up. If it is not on-screen press the volume button one more time to bring it up and see if the volume was adjusted while the phone was asleep. So it may be the volume is being turned down by the buttons while in your pocket.

  • RE: audio from all speakers

From a quick Internet search it looks like the Pixel 3a has Stereo speaker output which means it uses the bottom speakers as one channel and the ear piece speaker as the other. It makes more sense when you are using the phone in portrait mode. I would guess it still sounds better than mono over a single channel even if the ear piece doesn't have the dynamic range of the lower speakers.

@totalrando I don't think you understand. This has nothing to do with Google.

Install from the UT openstore https://open-store.io/app/switch-my-slot.shouko

    The code for UT https://github.com/ubports-xiaomi-sdm660/Switch-My-Slot-Ubuntu-Touch

    The above then links to

@totalrando There is an app in the app store for dual boot and one for android as well. It sets the active slot for the next reboot.

Thanks for the tip to find the build.

  • Backup and Restore scripts

I made a couple of bash scripts to backup and restore my UT phone home directory a while ago and decided to put them up on github in case they are useful to others.

Tested on Ubuntu 20.04 host and OnePlus One Bacon OTA-15

    • Requires Android debug tools on linux host system
    • Interative selection of directories to backup and restore
    • Creates dated backups for later restoration
    • Not tested for cross device restoring or restoring after updates
    • Includes hidden directories but not special directories

    Run

    UT_Backup_Tool.sh

to make a dated backup in a folder next to the scripts.

    Run

    UT_Restore_Tool.sh

to selectively restore the home directories. You will get to choose the backup and which directories to restore.
