    • Install & uninstall Lomiri session on your Linux desktop/tablet

      Re: To install Lomiri

      Hi,

This post is to share Lomiri on a desktop or Tablet/Tablet where your linux system is already installed and you don't want a VM or install another distro. We will use apt, so your system must be Debian based like Ubuntu.

      My Configuration

I am on a StarLite tablet (with cover keyboard) and wanted to try Lomiri to see if it was usable. It is running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (gnome-shell).

      My experience

(may change in the next months/updates):

At the moment of this post it is usable for testing, bug reporting and other contributions, but not yet for a stable usage (for example the on screen keyboard does not appear after login, so for your tablet...)

      To install

Open a terminal and type (lines starting with a "#" are to be read, not typed):

      sudo apt install lomiri-desktop-session mir-graphics-drivers-desktop

You can optionally install the same lockscreen (login screen) too

      sudo apt install lightdm
      # you will be asked to configure your login screen
      # after <ok> (press enter), a list of login manager will appear (for eg: gdm3, kdm, lightdm, ...)
      # note somewhere the element of the list (will be needed to remove the installation later)
      # select lightdm when prompted (with arrow), then press enter

some errors might appears (reported here), for eg, this was on my machine:

      screenshot with errors on click,lomiri-system-settings,lomiri-system-settings-privacy,lomiri,lomiri-desktop-session,lomiri-greeter
If that's "only" errors like that you had, you can continue:

      sudo reboot now

      After reboot,

      • swipe to unlock
      • before typing your password:
        • swipe the keyboard to the bottom of the screen to close it
        • click the white icon on the bottom right corner
        • choose Lomiri
      • click in the password field
      • enter password and enjoy Lomiri 🙂
        • don't forget to fill bug report in here.

      To uninstall:

sudo apt remove lomiri-desktop-session mir-graphics-drivers-desktop lightdm

some errors might appears, for eg, this was on my machine:

      screenshot with errors on click,lomiri-system-settings,lomiri-system-settings-privacy,lomiri

      Then:

      # remember the list of login manager? I told you to note it:
      # replace gdm3 with whatever else it was
      # (if you was on a recent gnome-shell like ubuntu 24.04, leave gdm3)
      sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
      sudo reboot now

I will update this post with your feedbacks, don't hesitate to give some 🙂

    • RE: Meizu Pro 5 Flyme OS To Ubuntu Touch + modem Update + Fingerprint Function.

      Hi,

I have an International Meizu PRO 5 32Gb

Everything worked, except STEP 5 (I'm not sure why).

My Alternative Step 5 was (thank to Matteo in the UBports Welcome & install group on telegram):

      • download the appImage: https://github.com/ubports/ubports-installer/releases/tag/0.2.6-beta (this specific version/binary)
      • cd ~/Downloads
      • chmod +ax ubportsinstaller.appImage
      • switch phone to fastboot (adb reboot fastboot or just hold [Volume down] + [power]
      • sudo ./ubportsinstaller.appImage
      • Ignore the ubports installer about more recent version
      • Select 16.04, then devel or stable for example, then wipe, and continue
      • keep following instructions
      • tadaa \o/

And any other steps worked !

Thank you very much for your work !!!

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 123 call for questions

Hi, thank you for all the contributions !
      My questions:

      1. Will gallery app have some photo edit features more than crop like photo filters as a built-in feature? Or you think using third app such as InstantPho is enough for now? I guess there are others features that gallery or photo apps could have built-in ? (qrcode, filters, but also: add texts / emoji / stickers to a photo, etc). I love the way contenthub allow to add many features almost like it was native, but for basics features that some people use daily, it would help the UX to have some of those features just built-in. I'm quite splitted about this question, where is the border? what are your thoughts ?
      2. Already asked this question years ago, just wanted to know about it but nowdays: Are apps package format will keep being click for now, or is there actually a roadmap to snap (Note, i've seen this initiative: https://open-store.io/app/snapz0r.fredldotme )
      3. Talking about snap, is there a discussion about going from Ubuntu LTS to LTS, to Ubuntu Core ? Might require a lot a base work, and pipelines, but would reduce effort on system upgrades i guess, or not ? any thought to share with us? Would it be easier to maintain specific hardware package with "gadget" or kernel snaps, or same but different ?
      4. Is there a roadmap for new app permissions ? For example: I guess this one would make sens for app that require fullscreen and many in-app controls (such as games) : app could call to switch themselves to an "immersive desktop" mode where right & left swipe are disabled during the use of the app? It could be also user enable/disable-able from an indicator i guess (We can see this initiative: https://open-store.io/app/indicator-immersive.kugiigi ), and also the apps permission to switch itself the mode could be removed from a setting permissions list (just like notifications for eg). This is an exemple, but maybe you have others in minds ? tell us please !
      5. You said no porting question, so I won't ask when fairphone5 will be listed in the Ubports Installer 😛

Once again, thank you to all the contributors, the ones from the beginning to the newest ones, from porting to new devices, to contributing to coreapp, lomiri (etc), or third apps, translating, qa, moderation and all the others ❤

      @kugiigi
      Thanks for your feedbacks !

Don't hesitate to report the issue you have encountered!

About the app spread, I activated in the setting the workspace menu, and just learn than to close an app in a swipe to bottom only (used to be top or bottom), the top is for something else now 🙂

I've did not even think about keeping the same login manager, I will update this choice in my previous post.

oh, how did you managed to make OSK works? I was touching different text input (app launcher search input, firefox search input, gedit, …), never gets launched (it is supposed to open UT OSK, right? not the same as gnome-shell?)
