Well, yeah, my ultimate goal was to try and use UT apps as my "daily driver" desktop environment. It all kind of assumes you know what all the tools are for, their history, how they fit together, and that you just need basically the man page of a tool instead of telling you what tool you need use in the first place. I did come across the UT programming course, but it mentions a lot of things that I think are out of date, so I'm not sure it is the best source. But I'm making progress and hope to be productive soon. My current best guess is it looks like you need to be running UBuntu 16.04 and use the Ubuntu SDK.

Hello cela here, been using a Nexus 5 on Ubuntu Touch as my main phone for the last 6 months, happy with it and happy to be free from Android, it does all I need.

I am interested in open software and hardware and plan to get a Pinephone when it is on general sale so I can have an 100% android blob free Linux Ubuntu Touch phone.
I hope that Ubuntu touch retains its uniqueness,I feel it must look and feel different to the big 2.

I would hate to see Anbox become a core app, the way forward is we must have more applications on the open store, I hope contribute soon.

I've got a HDMI slimport adapter, build works fine when connected to a monitor with usb, can run apps and work things fine using the touch screen mouse pad.

@moem I found that it is better to tick "First Install" regardless, then the installer guides you through what you need to do in TWRP recovery to prep the partitions, I also found that if you untick "Wipe Data" the install completes to 100%, otherwise I get the connection lost dialog at around 75% if I tick "Wipe Data".

I can 100% complete the install every time now but my device freezes on the 2nd reboot after install.

I am using UBports installer version 0.8.6 beta on Endeavour OS. It might help if anyone has success to let everyone know which installer version they are using and on what OS.

I am thinking of getting access to a Windows machine to see if it makes a difference, I have tried different usb cables in both front and rear USB ports.

 I have new batteries, does anyone know how difficult they are to replace? Someone said the charge port is a bear. Or might the battery be ok, just need a long term charge?

Did you swap the battery at all? I bought a 2nd Hand Nexus 5 with a boot loop and fixed it by swapping out the battery only and the battery is a lot easier to replace than the power switch. Almost no tools required just fingernails and a small cross head screwdriver. i would try that first, if you haven't already and save the power switch if you need it

I would like to be able to easily roll back to a previous version of Ubuntu Touch, if I wanted too is this possible?

My concerns comes from a thread where it was thought that Anbox was preinstalled with an recent update, even though it wasn't true I wouldn't want something like that, or maybe I might just like the look of an older version of Ubuntu Touch rather than the update.

@jjconstr Don't apply any heat, the battery is just fixed with the Goldilocks amount of glue, just ease it up gently.

Thanks for the tips. They were helpful. I didn't have to check youtube. I used my fingernail to remove the back, took out some screws I didn't need to, lifted the battery connector and then the battery. Putting a new battery in didn't correct the boot loop though. I also poked and prodded the switch to see if it would loosen up and work. No deal. Looks like there is a small pin or shaft that the button pushes on when depressed. It doesn't look like it moves at this point.

I guess I was one of lucky 1% that swapping out the battery worked for.

Careful with the hot gun and shield any parts that might melt when you swap the switch, those switches are so tiny good luck.

I had the same problem and decided to try and solve it by formatting both /data and /system. TWRP provides buttons to change the filesystem type for any partition, but afaik not to format any partition except /data. So using the UI I changed the filesystem of /data to ext4 and formatted it.

Then I went into a shell ($ adb shell on my PC but TWRP has an internal shell too) and unmounted /system to format it:

~ # mount

Note the block device /system is mounted on, then:

~ # umount /system/
~ # mkfs.ext2 /dev/block/<device>

(Yes, that's ext2, not 4, but it won't matter)

You can of course use the shell to format /data (and /cache) the same way if you want.

After that, I could install UT by not ticking the boxes for first install and wipe device.

Isn't there a manual install instruction somewhere?, I thought it was on the devices page, i'd like to try installing
manually, without the installer.
None of these solutions worked me, been messing around for hours, wiped and formatted all partitions except USB-OTG.Even formatted
SYSTEM using twrp terminal, still freezes on reboot, after installing. Even reinstalled Oxygen 9.0.6 using the installer and started over again.
I can install Lineage OS from TWRP no problem.

I can easily install, if I untick first install and wipe boxes, reboots, get the rotating
ring on first boot, then on 2nd reboot stuck on "Powered by Android" splash screen.

using ubports-installer_0.8.6-beta_linux_x86_64.AppImage and twrp-3.3.0-0-oneplus3.img newer versions of both
freeze up.

Just did a battery endurance test. Charged to 100% left on standby with screen off, bluetooth, gps and wi-fi off. no sim fitted at 10am 17th Sept, checked device at 10.05 am on 18th Sept and showed 72% charge remaining. This is with a second hand Nexus 5 with stock battery, looks good, will leave for another 24h, edit : - and at 48hrs 42% charge left.

So far, in my observation, it feels slower than the usual especially in the app spread which is a bit sluggish. It's working though so it's already a great progress. Keep it up Good luck!

I thought the install didn't take at first, my user data was kept too, but then noticed the offline battery animation has changed for the better!. Hope video acceleration will fix the sluggish UI and video experience.

I also was worried about wearing my micro usb port out, I tried the wireless charging too, it worked ok but was slower and the back case got quite hot, I was concerned about the heat and looked for alternatives.

I found a better solution was to use a magnetic usb cable, they are available all over the place and you get the bonus of being able to do data transfers as well, so I have ordered extra for all my phones.

I get questions about it like "what sort of phone have you got there?" Oh I say it's not apple or android , its an Ubuntu Touch phone!
