    • Successful Ubuntu Touch Install with UBPorts Installer on Lenovo M10 TB-X306F

      Hello,

This is meant to collect the steps I took, which worked, and which I distilled from various documents and sites, and much reading of this forum, in hopes it might help clear someone else’s mind a bit… (and maybe mine, later.)

      • adb & fastboot were run on Macbook Air in MacOS14 using platform-tools-latest-darwin.zip
      • Tablet has 4GB RAM & 64GB Storage
      • Android TB-X306F_S230940_240402_BMP

      There were almost no obstacles…

      Enabling Developer Mode
      In Android Settings:

      • .. System.. About.. quick taps on Build Number - OK
        In System.. {Developer Options}:
      • Enabled OEM Unlocking - OK 1st try
(After reboot, 2nd try, option was greyed-out OFF… message appeared: “connect to WiFi or contact operator” - once connected to WiFi, 3rd try - OK)
      • Enabled USB debugging - OK
      • I also changed default USB mode to “File Transfer”
        (probably superfluous)

      The Hurdle
VolumeUp+Power did not boot device from OFF state to Fastboot Mode. Not my one, maybe others.

      Unlocking Bootloader
      On Macbook Air:

      • I unzipped platform tools zip file in a Desktop folder ‘tools’
      • Lenovo tablet ON and in Android
      • Connected USB-C to USB-C & authorised debugging on Lenovo’s screen
        In MacOS Terminal, as typed:
        cd ~/tools/
        ./adb devices - OK
        ./adb reboot bootloader - OK
        ./fastboot flashing unlock_critical - OK
./fastboot reboot - OK - booted to Android
        ./adb devices - OK

      Installation with UBPorts Installer 0.11.2

      • Lenovo device was recognised
      • I selected 'Ubuntu Touch'
      • Then 24.04… Stable
      • Also 'Erase User Data'
The installation jogged along until the tablet rebooted into Ubuntu Touch. I was not tempted to touch the tablet or the Mac. No.
No, not a bit. Anyways, don’t.
      • Ubuntu Touch booted its beautiful self!
      • An App Update was available, so I accepted that.
      • There was a request to allow the Mac to access an external storage (the tablet, must be) so I allowed that.
      • Ubuntu Touch home screen and gesture prompts.
        Done.

I reported PASS for a successful result.
Now I’ll get started making it my own.

      Regards,
      KJU

[My first attempt with this device, after one former success with a Pixel 3a xl (bonito) and too much sad failure with a Nexus 7 (2013) (flo, or flox? with messed-up partitions…)]

    • RE: Successful Ubuntu Touch Install with UBPorts Installer on Lenovo M10 TB-X306F

      Hello,

After installing Ubuntu Touch on this tablet, I've been trying a few apps and a bunch of routine operations, & I have had a mystifying foray into Libertine...

I'm impressed with the Lenovo M10, and with Ubuntu Touch!
I'll post a summary of what I find works / doesn't later, in hopes it might help someone else who chooses this device.

      For a start:

      • ReStart does a ShutDown instead.
      • My MS Wedge Bluetooth keyboard works well.
      • Onscreen keyboard is also great; better in portrait mode.
      • Access to an inserted SDCard is okay (still a bit confused with it...)
      • Battery life seems really good.

Along with the experimenting I'm doing, I wanted to convince myself that I could reverse the clock, back to an Ubuntu Touch 'Fresh Install' state.

I first tried 'Reset Launcher' and it seemed to do nothing - Apps I'd installed were still there. I may have missed some effect, but all looked unchanged to me.

Then I chose 'Erase & Reset All' and found a 'Fresh Install' as I'd hoped. The message 'Installing Update' simply replaced the OS with the same (24.04-1.2) version.

I haven't tried re-installing with the UBPorts Installer. I'd guess (should never guess) it would have the same result, but I don't need it for this purpose - erasing the effects of my experiments / mistakes.

Hopefully I can avoid any return to Android. I've no Windows computer, and no desire. There's a lot to do in here!

      Cheers,
      KJU

    • Reverting to Stock Android 9 on Google Pixel 3a XL

      Hello,
Some people have had difficulty satisfying this prerequisite to installing Ubuntu Touch on the Pixel 3a XL...
      I had my share...!
So, in case this helps anyone:

After flash-all.sh & adb sideload methods failed with errors... and TRWP wouldn't load (fastboot boot twrp.img) or install...
I persisted, flashing individual .img files - still not booting...
TWRP eventually came up! (fastboot boot twrp.img)

      • I used TWRP to adb sideload the Google OTA Android 9 .zip (to slot a)
      • Then I used adb sideload with stock recovery (to slot b)
      • I used stock recovery adb sideload (to slot a)
      • Then I used stock recovery "Factory Reset"
      • Android 9 booted.
      • UBPorts Installer ran perfectly.

What seems to have worked for me:

      • Persistence
      • Sideloading Android 9 OTA to BOTH slots a and b
      • Factory Reset in stock recovery after all that

[I use a Linux PC; latest adb & fastboot;]
[latest version Google Stock Android 9 files]

      Don't give up.

    • Okay to boot TWRP temporarily?

      Hello.
Ubuntu Touch is running nicely on Pixel 3a XL bonito.
      Many thanks for that.

In order to make a full backup and store it off-device, can I safely boot TWRP over a USB connection with:

      • 'fastboot boot twrp.img'
      • and only use the backup function
... then reboot UBTouch without installing TWRP?
And, would the backup be TWRP-restorable?

I have faith that somebody knows!
      Cheers,

      Hello,

I wanted to experiment with Waydroid. I installed Waydroid Helper, then used it to install Waydroid & Waydroid Stop.

When I launched Waydroid, I saw its name once at the top of the screen, then the right third of the display became a never-ending dance of part of a window sliding-in & sliding-out. Not of any use. Launching Waydroid Stop, stopped it.

I Reset Launcher & Reset-Erase&ResetAll. Back to fresh state. Done with Waydroid for now.

      • The one App I reinstalled straight away is LightP Word Processor. I'm liking that one.
      • The Lomiri environment impresses me more and more as I use it.
      • Morph Browser is taking some getting used to, but I have figured out (with a hint from this forum) the slow up-swipe from the very bottom to choose from among open tabs.

      Cheers,
      Kurt

      Hello,
TWRP, it seems, doesn't boot temporarily with my Ubuntu Touch bonito device in fastboot mode.

      • 'fastboot boot twrp.img' gives 'no CMD or OS...' error.

However, 'Android Flash Tool' by Google makes the task of restoring stock factory Android to Pixels...
      So... much... easier.
(It took me a while to find it, that's all.)

      https://flash.android.com/welcome

Access is by opening that website in Chrome or Edge or another of several compatible browsers.

When it completes, it offers to lock the bootloader, but that can be skipped.
