This sounds like an excellent principle. I would disagree about removing parts of the OS though, as that would add a lot of work to maintaining it and need additional server space (with heating footprint...) but there are other ways of using old phones, by selecting different elements from the UT. Those should be left in the OS too.

Asteroid OS for Asus and LG watches is built on Qt, QML and libhybris. Does that mean a close synergy with UT should be possible? [Invite Florent Revest to a future Q&A?]

@UBportsNews My question is ~ What potential might the new kernel in the Pinephone provide? Improved bluetooth; disk encryption; image and video processing; new UI features?

Pinephone - future camera capability
Re: [PinePhone]
I of course understand that the first iteration of the Pinephone has a camera module which is chosen for basic utility and no more. None of the operating systems projected to run on it will have any significant image post-processing capability, so everything hangs on the inbuilt features of the chosen camera hardware. My 'dream ticket' for a Pinephone 2 would be the module used in the OnePlus3 - back illuminated, RAW capable and with optical image stabilisation

RE: Device advise
Hands free doesn't work in Ubuntu Touch. Lots of users are frustrated by the absence of the feature. Bleutooth connection mostly works and the music audio protocol operates correctly. Speech conversation does not. It may be that the SCO channel capability is not enabled: or that it is enabled and not found: or that it is enables and found but that the necessary codec is not enabled or is not found...
There may be a very simple fix but whatever the answer, it needs a mini project team of specialists - which we don't have. Hopefully such a team will form -

@ziggutas The camera on the OnePlusThree is working to some extent. The 3T is only able to do screenshots of the live camera at present

RE: Ubuntu Touch Photographs
Around five or six representative images from each supported device is probably about right to begin with. It will satisfy curiosity and for those users who particularly like to use their phone as a camera, it will serve as a basic review of performance. Xperia X camera is not working yet but when it is, it will be interesting to see how it performs with Ubuntu Touch.
OnePlus3 is the most interesting of all from a photography point of view, for a variety of reasons. That deserves a blog post all its own. Very few users have one yet but photo samples are especially welcome!

I am curious about the Camera app. What functionality does it have or lack, compared with Android? I mean focus, compression algorithms, sharp mask, noise filter etc?
