    • RE: Snaps vs apt? 20.04

this is the off topic section of forum

i feel like it was a fair assumption that the UT forum would have people on it who use ubuntu on a computer, and may have some useful information to share with me

i get tired of copy and paste responses on dedicated forums, by people who dont read posts, dont understand what they are copying, or who want to insist that the OP has no right to do something

...i miss the days when forum where full of informative and helpful people. so thanks for the useful replies.

    • Snaps vs apt? 20.04

I thought i would give 20.04 a try on my macbook, mostly it works - but i am havingvery strange issues using apt/apt-get

it keeps telling me i have held broken packages - i do not; dpkg --get-selections | grep hold, confirms this

(i still ran the usual update/upgrade/autoremove, just incase)

But when i try to install, for eg, libasound2-dev (for mycroft), apt insists i have held broken packages - running dev_setup for mycroft (from github) gives me the same error

It also tells me i need libasound2, which is already installed

I get this with allot of packages i try to install, and i am starting to wonder if snaps is the cause? I dont see how it should be, but perhaps canonical has done something which is breaking apt, in favour of snaps?

installing mycroft via snaps works ... until you run it, then it breaks trying to install dependencies lol

not sure what further options there are in regards apt believing there are broken packages, dpkg telling me there are not, and synaptic claiming to have fixed dependencies / broken packages but the issue remaing..

guessing there are some Ubuntu 20.04 users out there, any ideas?

    • new line not being sent in SMS

It seems the SMS app is stripping out new lines, i have tried adding double new lines, but the text still gets sent as one long and difficult to read sentence

on the off chance there is a work around, im posting here? any special chars which might break this behavior? otherwise i think new sms per new line is the only option lol

    • RE: Convenient VPN App

getting ovpn files to import would be massive, that is by far the most painful bit atm lol i could live without an app, if i could quickly import the 200 odd connections i use easily

    • RE: Confused about idle screen lock

i have been unable to fix this issue, if the screen is on and device locked, the screen never goes off (regardless of idle settings)

this is starting to be an issue, because when i get a message or email or call, the screen of course switches on, and then it never switches off, so if i get something just as im going to sleep that i dont see, my phone screen is on all night 😥 any suggestions?

@atchoumm most banks also offer chip readers as an alternative authentication method, ask your bank for one (most banks give them away free)

    • keyboard overlapping fullscreen windows

i have launcher autohide off, and windowed mode on, and i find the windows do not adjust to the keyboard when maximised, for eg i cannot see the text input in sms while typing

i know they are able to adjust to the keyboard, as they do when in normal UT mode, does anyone know where that switch might be? if it is actually a switch which might work in windows mode too?

for now i just normalise windows when i need, but would be nice to enable the adjustment automatically, even in windowed mode

    • RE: 4G lost after a while

to be clear, it solved itself, after the phone screen was left on unintentionally for 11hrs on lockscreen (idle time out doesnt work for me)

(i tried all but 1 suggestions before making the thread, and they didnt work for me, i didnt switch channel stable/dev, but that seems to have worked for someone else)

    • RE: no more LTE

L came back half an hour ago lol back to full speed - my phone screen had been on for 11hrs, on lock screen (unintentionally, screen refuses to automatically switch off on lock screen), so perhaps the OS was not able to restablish 4G connection while the screen was off?

wasn't a network issue, not one that was made public anyway - carriers dont tend to hide network issues tbh

i am on stable, but if it happens again i will consider trying a switch ... this is my main phone now though, i dont need more instability hehe

    • RE: no more LTE

only getting 7-8mbps the last 12hrs, i expect 4 times that on an average day with EE LTE, more on a good day

but that is what i would expect for 3G, so the error is not the letter display, i just dont have LTE any more

    • RE: Any plans to have encryption as an option in future Ubuntu Touch installers? [Solved]

      @ell1e

yes that is a solution, but any password long enough to make brute force a waste of time, is going to be very difficult to remember or enter regularly (unless combined with a hardware key on the device security chip)

for most people that probablyisnt an issue, but fkr anyone who genuinely needa the encryption, it probably would be

(edit : he typos above are good example of why a password is not ideal for phone encryptionlol ..unfortunatly i find UTs keyboard v buggy, random spaces, deleting spaces, changing capitalisation randomly, duplicated letters, etc, at the moment)

    • RE: Any plans to have encryption as an option in future Ubuntu Touch installers? [Solved]

one work around could be an NFC key, which provides the encryption key, without having to get into the hardware security tech of different phones
