@guru Well it is how all those messengers work. WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Skype etc... I think that we should stop at a certain point with always coming with the privacy argument. Why do you use an instant messenger at all if you do not want your counterpart to know if you read smth? Use email then. Instant messengers are for fast, reliable communication, and part of this reliability is to know if the other party has received my message. Its just my point of view ofc.
UT can do nothing about, except to disable this feature on the client side. Still, your reads will be shown by other Apps on Android and iOS.

@ukphil Yes they changed the API. There is a test buld already that solves it for chats and dialogs, but not for supergroups. Working on that, expect update soon

@flohack On my FreeBSD laptop I use a command line tg client. And this does not notify the server if I do read some message I received, also not that I'm typing some new message. IMHO, this should be a configuration option of the tg client.

@guru Well this will have the side effect that you will see in all chats "34543 unread messages" and this number increasing forever. Because, as soon as the telegram client marks a message read, also the peer is being notified. This clearly does not matter on a cmdline client, but for a GUI application this is not really useful.
Of course then you can disable the message bubble, but then you will never know in which chats you got unread messages. I find this highly confusing.
The typing could be disabled, yes, but whats the purpose? If you type a message, and then send it, your receiver will see a message, but no typing info before. Great, you just did not disclose that you typed it. Maybe you just copied it from clipboard. You never know. sneaky sneakyBR

@guru if you want privacy you shouldn't use Telegram at all, you should use something like Signal or Matrix end-to-end encrypted and using your own homeserver.
On the other hand, if you want the convenience of Telegram, you have to know you are giving up full privacy. All your messages are stored in their servers after all, and it's impossible to know what the Durov brothers are doing with that content really.

As I said, this should be a configuration option. I use tg (also the GUI in my BQ E4.5) to talk to my partners, i.e. mostly 1:1 dialogues, for example with my son, or with my wife. And we both always know how far we're in the dialogue. And when I want to know if there is an answer on my last statement/question, I just open this chat. And I'm not interested in seeing in my last text the two markers 'vv' to know "well he has read it, but is too lazy to answer'. I keep saying, that these 'vv' are violating the privacy of the peer.

I personally like the idea that you can see when the other person has picked up/read the message (or as best can be). Yes, it would be nice to turn this feature off at the recipient side, as more features are good for growing apps and we now live in a feature rich app world. However, I personally think that being able to delete sent messages (on both the sender and receiver side) like we can in the desktop and Andriod app is more important. The amount of times I have had to swap over to my Andriod phone to delete a message ο Oh and making calls on there too would be really nice.

I have not seen Signal or Matrix, but I was under the impression that Telegram was secure and safe. Reading your comments is slightly concerning as I am more and more privacy conscious these days.

@lakotaubp Thanks for that. I have had a look and I like the "Fixed a bug that prohibited a lot of users to sign in the first time or at all - Hello Australia!" point at the bottom of the list. I remember talking to @Flohack about this in some detail. I think I will have to get this one downloaded.
