[solved] Much confusion regarding Ubuntu Touch versions and updates

I see three channels: Development, Release Candidate, and Stable. What does each one mean? What are the pros and cons of each one? By choosing the Development channel, what should I expect to see as it relates to my original question? Finally, once I get the updates, do I switch it back to stable?

@dln949 have you updated all the apps? Unfortunately theres a bug that hides the system updates as long as not all app updates are installed.
It tells me that all apps are current, there are none to update.

with the passage to 16.04 ( r3 was the last version with 15.04, more recent version are all on 16.04) new names has been introduced, OTA on the stable channel, a week number with the year on the RC channel and the day on devel.now, idk why your device isn't updating, but I suggest you using the ubports installer to a 16.04-based version, I remember some other users having problems upgrading from 15.04 to 16.04...
Do you mean to do a complete, fresh installation? Or, do you mean to follow the upgrade process found at the top of the page at this URL ("Ho do I get it?"): link text ?

@dln949 Development is the very latest version of Ubuntu Touch for your device and can be a bit experimental and not recommended for everyday use as it can very rarely cause issues and is updated normally daily. Release Candidate is the version that as the name suggests is nearly ready for release and needs some more testing but in most cases causes no issues on a daily basis and updates weekly.. Stable again as the name suggests is the version recommended for everyday use.
By switching to development it should hopefully pull through the very latest version for your device and solve the issue. I should have said that after that yes you can switch back to stable and still have the very latest 'stable' version for your device. Try this first as it has solved the problem before.
If after this your still on 15.04 you might be best to flash the latest version 16.04, but try Dev first and see how you go. If it works and updates to 16.04 you will get an introduction/walk through to 16.04 and have the new Morph browser.P.S The latest OTA -7 (over the air) is a staged roll out that ends on Sunday. That means all devices should get it by then but I'm not sure if the device order. So while you will get 16.04 it may not be OTA-7 until Sunday have a read of the https://ubports.com/blog/1/post/192 for full details.

I did what you suggested, and yes, my device did get a development version of 16.04. But, when I changed the channel back to "stable", in the "about" screen, the software version simply disappeared from appearing on that screen. Should that concern me? Should I expect to see the OTA-7 update hit my device soon?

Then I restarted the tablet, and when I looked it had changed itself back to Development. I did not like that. So, I changed it back to stable again. It now shows the version as Ubuntu 16.04 (2019-01-12).
Unless you think this is a bad idea, I'll wait until sometime on Monday to see if I get updated to OTA-7. If that does not happen, I'll return to ask what to do next. (Sorry!)
I did not understand your last sentence : "You can change how those updates are downloaded in update settings by the way." All I can see to change is which channel, and whether to get them via WiFi or never get them. No other options appear there. Am I looking in the wrong place?

@dln949 No that's fine you have the update showing now and yes wait till Monday. You can pop back anytime it's not a problem. Yes that is the bit I meant the automatic download over wifi, any date connection or never.

Hm, "It now shows the version as Ubuntu 16.04 (2019-01-12)" that doesn't seem like a stable release to me. But it is probably because a switch from devel to stable didn't succeed.
I've bumped into this odd behaviour every time I've tried to use the system settings channel switcher - the behaviour of the system settings app is a bit odd after you trigger a release change, you can no longer see the list of channels when it is processing the change, it takes a while (depending on your Internet connection speed) and not always displays progress on the update page.
So, what I would suggest you to do until you see "OTA-7" on the about page is to reboot the device so that all possible pending operations are killed, then go to the channel switcher and switch from "devel" to "stable" (which is what you want) and then try to watch the updates screen of the setting app. Once the desired stable Ubuntu release is downloaded (it is about 500MB+ large IIRC) hit the install button.
In case there is nothing visible on the update screen of the settings app, try to exit and renter the updates screen of the setting app a few times (give it time, maybe 10 minutes) and if nothing shows up you may want to restart the device and try again the whole process from switching from devel to stable on the versions screen.
IMPORTANT: Only do the above if you still see the "2019-01-12" version format instead of "OTA-7" on the device screen, otherwise you are on stable and can ignore it all...

Well it worked. Thanks to everyone for your help!
For the record, here's what I had to do:
I had the problem that when I was in the dev channel and changed it to stable, if I restarted the tablet, or even simply backed out of that screen where you select the channel, the tablet would not "keep" the stable channel as my setting, but would instead revert it back to dev on its own. So, what worked for me, was I had to select the stable channel, and then on the side change from the update setting to the about setting, and there tap on "check for updates". That seemed to cause the OTA-7 upgrade to occur. The tablet restarted, and I am now on OTA-7 on the stable channel. I also selected the option to reinstall all applications, and updated all applications that needed updating.
One remaining question I have: In the future, when there are updates to the OS - major updates or minor - will my tablet now simply just accept the OTA updates that are sent to it (provided that I allow that)?
P.S.: How does a person "close" an issue on this forum?
