I'll try to keep it short:

I have bought the PinePhone at the Q1 of 2021, since then, the Stable channel didn't seem to get any more stable. and I mean really. First bug that I experience already has a fix in devel channel, and it was there for months, but for some reason the stable channel didn't get it. Why? Who knows. Where is the plan on moving the fixes from devel to stable? Can't find that anywhere either. So, since:

      • Issues reported on gitlab are still there not solved after being there for months.
      • the PR created https://gitlab.com/ubports/community-ports/pinephone/-/merge_requests/10 hasn't been merged for 10 months now, which to anyone who looks at it, is a big red flag.
      • things listed as non working on https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/pinephone/ didn't seem to change at all since I bought the phone.

I guess I need to understand if we all want to go with UBPorts.

      1. Since this seems to be the most important right now (judging from the answers given) When we can expect the 20.04 based system be available for Pinephone. I'm asking for an optimistic estimated delivery date.
      2. Once the above is done how much more time the stable channel allow us to make the things that every other mobile system out there has? This means calling, SMS, MMS, dial tone. Asking for an optimistic delivery date.

This is so we can all understand when should we come back to the project and test it again, but go for another solution for the time being.

OK so from the above, the detailed answers is:

No optimistic delivery date exists. Simply check back every few months if there's a new stable release by running UBPorts from a spare SD card.
There's no known date of when Ubports on PinePhone will be able to work as a daily driver, so for now either:

        • go for another phone if you still really want to use UBPorts
        • go for another distribution if you really want to use Pinephone

Thank you all for the answers. Case closed.

            On the other hand...

I have now been using the Development branch for about a month and have not experienced any issues so far! 😄

So if you want frequent updates I suggest you try the same! 😉

No, Pinephone has the same channels. 😛
@simbar, if you want to see what's new you'd better be on Devel if you're not. Or failing that RC. I read again what you said, and I think you already know.

@bolly well, the pinephone has the channels, but they are of limited practical relevance at the moment, because only devel gets new builds. latest builds as of right now:

                      • 2022-01-15 devel
                      • 2021-08-20 rc
                      • 2021-04-08 stable

stable just means it changes less, dev will have all the fixes first

@simbar You may also want to ask here https://t.me/utonpine the Telegram group for Pine. This was one issue that stopped the move to stable https://gitlab.com/ubports/community-ports/pinephone/-/issues/271

Where is the plan on moving the fixes from devel to stable?

The problem is that currently, for some people, something in the newer images in devel/rc, is causing syslog to get spammed, filling the storage of the phone. We obviously don't want to push that to stable. This may be an issue in the kernel, and upgrading the kernel again to 5.15 or 5.16 may resolve it, but there isn't anyone who has volunteered to work on that. Kernel upgrade should also pull in some fixes for display output on USB and support for the keyboard case.

the PR created https://gitlab.com/ubports/community-ports/pinephone/-/merge_requests/10 hasn't been merged for 10 months now, which to anyone who looks at it, is a big red flag.

It seems likely that nobody else has tested the change, and it's not clear that if it is a benefit or detriment as it seems the person who proposed also changed something else on their system, which may affect results. It may also affect different versions of the PinePhone differently, as there are various hardware revisions.

Since this seems to be the most important right now (judging from the answers given) When we can expect the 20.04 based system be available for Pinephone. I'm asking for an optimistic estimated delivery date.

It's not clear when 20.04 will have devel channel available for all the main devices yet, so it is not easy to answer this.

Once the above is done how much more time the stable channel allow us to make the things that every other mobile system out there has? This means calling, SMS, MMS, dial tone. Asking for an optimistic delivery date.

I'm not sure what you mean by "dial tone," but I presume you mean DTMF in call for use with automated systems. I don't have an answer for that one, but calls, SMS, and MMS should already be working in the devel and rc images.
