Snap discussion.

@Rinkeby I managed to scale up several snap applications with this terminal command:
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 2.0
Apart from that, they are hard to use on a touch screen. But they run well on an external monitor and you will barely notice that you are using a smartphone
So, for an external monitor, I recommend not to scale up the GUI. -
@Rinkeby said in Snap discussion.:
The UI part in general should be fixed. With math and/or AI redesigning the scale of things. Or just a repository of UI settings, themes and what not.
Nothing as complicated as that, thankfully. Iirc it is simply an environment variable that needs to be set.
Hope to see something like that soon. Because that is the power of linux!
Rather, the power of Linux (or Open Source in general) is that users of the software can jump in and make the change they want to see happen.

@Schlicki2808 what snaps have you run successfully?
On my Oneplus5t...
I tried ro install Firefox, which didn't work.
I installed some cli Snaps which were fine: ponysay, nrich, fkill, qhttp
I installed the snap-store successfully but it doesn't rum visibly at least.
-
On my oneplus 5T it says the kernel is ok, I click on Enable, it says that it's installing and then it reboots and then when I open the program nothing changed, it says the same things. I went through this twice, no progress.
-
@mihael I installed SnapzOr via the open store and that set everything up. Did you try that?
I donr have the device on me so can't ofder any other advice unfortunately.
-
@padraic Yes, from Open Store.
-
@padraic Remmina and Gimp are working fine on my Google Pixel 3a.
Btw. I also had initial problems after installing the app but I got help and could solve them. See here: https://github.com/fredldotme/snapz0r/issues/3
-
I opened a new issue about my particular situation: https://github.com/fredldotme/snapz0r/issues/4
*update: issue solved, see link above.

It shouldnt be that komplicated. but that is how you automize it. As GUI always suffer in linux.
And the dynamics of linux is that you can tinker with everything. But the power of linux is its free code and programs. That or you underastimate the task of making Blender, Darktable. It takes years. So use it.
-
@Rinkeby I know how long it takes to write software which is featureful, and with a good UI. Especially the latter is quite difficult.
I just meant that you seemed to be saying the power of Linux was to sit back and hope that someone would come by and fix an issue that you were facing. While the true power is, as you yourself say, the possibility to jump in and explore, investigate and discover if one can solve the issue oneself.
-
Yes for sure. And I tinker a lot. But obviusly things I cant do either.
In fact, If I am going to contribute to the community better. Its going to be UI.
-
@Schlicki2808 that's interesting, I can't install either of them on my Oneplus5t.

@padraic Same here. I opened this issue: https://github.com/fredldotme/snapz0r/issues/5
and: https://forums.ubports.com/topic/9636/can-t-get-any-snaps-installed -
@mihael maybe it's a kernel issue? I've no idea. Thanks for opening the issue.
-
Thanks for the discussion guys!
Gave me some insight of Snap. Its going to be a interesting future of that I think. Personally I have to wait for volla as kernel and such goes through them.
