Focal/20.04 is out for quite a while now. You still use Xenial/16.04? I would like to know what stops you from upgrading?
-
Hi @usah glad to hear you use and like the wifi scanner app. I am not the original creator of the app. I simply recompiled it for Xenial when that came out. And that turned out to work perfectly
Unfortunately the same trick did not work going to Focal. The app does compile and start up, but it is not able to show any signal. I have also not been able to investigate the issue.
I might need to make a dedicated forum post asking for help with this. -

I am running my OP5T as daily
So am I, and I upgraded to Focal through the updater; unfortunately, all is not well. The system is buggy and unstable. I will probably need to do a clean installation to fix that and I'm slowly gathering courage to bite the bullet and reinstall. The current lack of a good and GUI based backup method is my main issue here.

Hi, thanks for the question. I am still using Xenial on Volla 22. I have not yet upgraded to Focal, because I use the phone as a daily driver and I am lacking information what will be not working anymore after the upgrade. Lack of information is the main problem for me.
There are at least three sources to figure out what will not work with the Volla 22 on Focal [1],[2],[3] and they are not encouraging, although I am not sure whether some information is outdated.
For example, source [1] tells me that on Focal "Cellular data is not available on SIM 2 when two are inserted". If this is still correct, this would be a problem for me.
For example, source [2] did not give much information whether it is safe to upgrade to Focal, and I am not sure whether the problem with Telegram still exists that messages / settings do not get transferred correctly to Focal.
For example, source [3] does not yet give information on OTA-4 and it is unclear what of the "Known Issues" still exist.
Additionally to that, I have data in the "Notes" app which has not yet been ported to Focal.

None of my devices have a focal port.

@Keneda do you hesitate to buy a focal compatible smartphone ?

At first sight, something is going wrong with the wifi scan request -
@danfro I would love to, but my Nexus 5 does not get a compatible Focal port (still hoping it will come one day).

The FP2 I own, has no focal port. In this post there was a claim, that it is possible to run focal on FP2, but no one told how. If there was an focal port, I would probably run it.

Is this question because of this which is a long time coming.
The devices I have are:
Google Nexus 4 - Xenial - works well
Google Nexus 5 - Xenial - works well
Google nexus 5X - Xenial - loads of issues
Google Nexus 6P - Xenial - works
Google Nexus 7 (flo and deb) Xenial - works
Google Pixel 2 - Xenial - works
Google Pixel 3a - Focal - works well
Google Pixel 3aXL - focal - works wellMotorola Moto E2 XT1524 - Xenial - loads of issues
Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 - Focal -works quite well
Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 - focal -works
Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 - Xenial - works really well (my go to UT device)
Xiaomi Pocophone M1 - Xenial - lots of issues
Xiaomi Redmi 9 Pro - Focal - works really well
Xiaomi Redmi 9 - Xenial - works (poor battery life)
Xiaomi Redmi 4X - Xenial - works?
Xiaomi Redmi 3X/3S - Xenial - loads of issues
Xiaomi Redmi 7 - Xenial -works with issues, but a really nice screenOnePlus One - Xenial - works really well, another go to device
OnePlus One - Focal - issues, but thanls to @TheVancedGamer doing stuff for development when he has time
OnePlus two - Xenial - loads of issues
OnePlus Three and ThreeT - Xenial - works fine, just a slippery phone, needs a case.
OnePlus Five and FiveT - Focal - One of the best and easiest devices to install UT on, there are issues, but it works for me
One Plus Six and SixT - Focal - again and easy one to install on, but does have issues.Samsung S3 Neo -Xenial - works with issues
Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge - Xenial and now Focal - so nice, have issues, but mainly workAnd of course my Original BQ Aquaris E4.5 on Xenial that is still going strong after much use.
Then there is my Lenovo Tabs
TB-X605F on Xenial, works, but the booting issue
TB-X605F/L on Focal which works apart from the camera (don't use camera on a tablet)TB-X306F - Focal - nice, not on the installer, but works for me!
I fixed a lot of these devices up, especially broken screens, buttons and battery replacement. Some I don't just to use as scratch devices to try Android ROMs.
I spread the word about UT as much as I can, but too many are hooked to there Iphones and Samsungs, which for repair are appallingly bad, and Iphones are Ewaste when iOS is ended on the device.
So the question, what stops me from upgrading:
some devices are too old for the upgrade
Some devices work well on Xenial and not so on Focal, but I try and have scratch devices to test, (mainly for me at the moment).
some devices just die (nexus 5 commits suicide by bootloop due to a design flaw on the eMMC getting toasty). -
Only thing I miss from xenial is hutspot https://github.com/wdehoog/hutspot-ut/releases
Or rather a way of channeling spotify to my livingroom hifi system. Also that focal doesn't have the tweak tool in order to keep apps awake, I miss.
But it is a patience game, isn't it? Not complaining, and really happy that I can live without android and ios. -
I've got an OPO (bacon) still running Xenial. I didn't know Focal was available on this device until now -- I thought it wasn't gonna happen, and hadn't checked lately.
But the OPO is no longer a phone here in the US, so I use it as a tiny tablet. I've got it set up how I like it, and I really don't want to find out what apps I like don't translate to Focal. Sometimes I let my kid play games on it while waiting for the dentist or whatever, and I suspect not all of those will have made the transition.

My FP3+ is running focal. My BQ Aquaris M10 FHD would like to do so

About mid January, after I could compile a successful version of "Indicator Weather" and my MR for it has been approved.
Thanks a lot for bringing "Indicator Weather" to focal. Really useful app.
Regarding ActivityTracker, I can't see a MR/PR in the repos.
But I did a lot of development for that app. It simply hasn't been released for focal by the maintainers. I have some more code kind of ready, but never pushed it to the PR since there was no feedback. I already thought about taking over maintainership, but would need to ask permission of the old maintainers first. Also I am currently quite busy with tedit development. So I wouldn't mind of someone else steps up. But in theory ActivityTracker is ready to go out for focal. -

The TweakTool development was doing some progress recently thanks to Jami. You could try the latest pipeline from the development branch: https://gitlab.com/myii/ut-tweak-tool/-/pipelines.
To simply keep the screen awake, you could use https://open-store.io/app/activescreen.mateo-salta. Also it might be worth opening a feature request for those apps so they can include the "keep screen on" function.

I am afraid no one will be able to tell you for sure if your setup will work or not since there are so many options, apps and ways to use a phone. But of course I understand your concerns. One wants the daily phone to simply work.
Do you run UT as primary OS on the volla phone? On dual sim devices like my OP5T currently mobile data seems to work only on the first sim card. That issue persists as far as I know.
Since Telegram/Teleports store all messages on their server, I don't see how that can pose a problem. Or are you talking about private chats?

The devices I have are:
Your amazing long list sound like you are a phone shop.
Thanks a lot for sharing your info and details for all those devices.Yes, quite some old devices will not get focal since it simply isn't worth the effort and only very few people do actually have a working device of their kind. I heard some rumor maybe the N5 might find someone looking into it. But we will see. Don't take my word as a promise. Get a new device if you get the option.

So sad yours is misbehaving a lot. But yeah, I guess a clean install might help. I fully agree a good GUI backup software would be very helpful.

@danfro @Keneda , yes, too many devices as I have others running other Android ROM's (no not a phone shop, just hobbying, but did do stuff for a Computer Shop, PC's and laptops seemed to have died a death these days, even tablets unless it's an iPad aren't so popular). A lot, I hope I have saved from landfill and I do repair and sell on.
I would like to see older devices bought onto Focal, but I can see why they aren't and a they do have a life before things fail. Batteries and eMMC's do not last for ever and screens get smashed (finding quality replacements is not easy) and of course 3G is/has gone in a lot of areas.
My favourite device has to be the Nexus 4. Easy to repair, small, quality screen and rarely bootloops...
