VoLTE status on Pixel 3a/3a XL
-
Hello everyone,
In order to keep things orderly, I decided to create this post so you can have the latest news regarding VoLTE support for the Pixel 3a.
In Q&A 152, Alfred gave some information regarding the issues he's facing in that regard.
To sum things up and (try) to avoid mistakes, I'll keep it simple. The plugins required to use VoLTE on Ubuntu Touch is available for both Qualcomm and Mediatek devices.
But integrating it for the current port is not possible or complicated.
Alfred mentioned 2 ways to solve the problem, but I remember only the one involving rebasing the port on halium 11.What I remember also is that Alfred needs help to (at least) test things out because his device is not authorized by his service provider to use VoLTE.
So I take this opportunity to ask for your help.
If you have skills to help port to halium 11 that would be great.
If you cannot, maybe you can donate some money to Alfred to thank him for all the work he already put into these devices and the upcoming work. And @fredldotme if you can share more information regarding what you need (skills or how to check if we can technically help), that would be wonderful.

@Lakotaubp Hi, I'm new to UB Ports and UB in general. I've had a Pixel 3a XL setup for 5-6 weeks now and fully functional in Australia on Telstra network. I've been loving the UI and launcher! The work done on this platform is really undervalued by the general public.
Thank you all for the efforts put in to get the installer and UT itself to such a stable and reliable point!
Recently my telco cancelled 3G network coverage and turned off all 3G towers. I now am unable to receive or make calls on the Pixel 3a XL.
My question is, how did your research go? Will I have to revert to an android phone for the time being? Currently my connection is set to 2, 3, 4G. Running UB Touch Stable 20.04 I think.
Thanks in advance and I hope I can continue to enjoy UB as my permanent daily driver.

Hi @twitchos
I took the liberty to move your post in this new topic as I think it will make things easier for everyone.
I tried also to give some answer in my introduction post... -
@AppLee Thank you for the clear description of the issue. I had a similar problem with my Huawei Mate 20 pro running android - EMUI update v12 never came to Australia due to politics but is required for VoLTE. Once updated it works fine.
I realised during this process that I needed a newer base version of android to enable this feature on the pixel 3a XL. I would be happy to assist in trialing a solution. I am familiar with basic porting process and have a samsung S7 successfully running Lineage OS. But by far my favourite is UB Touch so I'm motivated to find a solution.
Any hints on where I should start? Yes, have donated to the UB Touch project already and happy to contribute further.
Thanks again. Look forward to helping however I can.

@AppLee I've got UT running on a Pixel 3a XL with a prepaid AT&T SIM and confirmed with AT&T tech support 11/19/24 VoLTE is available on the plan.
Under Network, I see AT&T with the right angle triangle and the "L" in the small square to the right of the triangle.
I can:
- Send and receive SMS messages
- Browse the internet
I cannot:
- Make or receive calls
- Send or receive MMS messages
I'm not familiar with porting to halium 11, but interested in learning and/or can troubleshoot and/or test. What can I do to help?

Hi @JDee-Intl
Your situation is as expected.
LTE data works, but the phone stack (VoLTE = Voice over LTE) is not working.@JDee-Intl said in VoLTE status on Pixel 3a/3a XL:

Standby for the moment, I bet Alfred will post a call for help when the situation starts to evolve.
Some additional work is also required on the plugins.Sorry you'll have to be patient. We're getting there but it's not a done thing.

If you have skills to help port to halium 11 that would be great. It seems Alfred may be rebasing the port more on Halium 12 than Halium 11 :

@libremax This is exciting news. I'm not tech enough to understand all of the files in that link but can see that there is a large volume of work already complete and a great deal of functionality seems to have been achieved.
I would be happy to trial a port when ready and provide some logging and data feedback. I will await instruction/contact from Alfred. Very exciting to consider being back on the slick and smooth UB Touch (currently running IODE on a pixel 5- which is ok, but it's no UB Touch!)
