      I have Ubuntu 16.04 on a Pixel 3a. I have an active Verizon Sim that I took from a working phone. When I put that sim into the Pixel 3a I don't get any voice, data or sms.

      Any suggestions from other Verizon users? Maybe I need to manually set APN settings?

        @sringgen Verizon is not yet supported. Ofono needs modifications to support VoLTE to make that happen. It's being worked on, but is a difficult problem.

          @sringgen as stated VoLTE is being worked on for ofono, the other side of the token is that Verizon uses CDMA and afaik CDMA does not currently work correctly, if at all, so there is also that.

          Whether you think you can, or you can't, if you do not try, you will never truly know. So give it a Go.

            @sringgen - Verizon and Sprint unfortunately do not work with Ubuntu Touch currently as they use CDMA instead of GSM. Your best bet for a network that works well with UT devices in the USA is T-mobile. Some mobile carrier resellers, like Red Pocket, offer decently discounted plans for SIMs that use the T-mobile network as well.

              @tigerpro Verizon has switched completely to VoLTE. And is refarming their CDMA bands to VoLTE. I have several GSM only devices on Verizon (via US Mobile) now as a result, even though they do not have band 13, nor CDMA capability.

              Sprint is mixed CDMA, VoLTE, and GSM. And has filed complaints against T-mobile because they are turning off Sprint's CDMA now.

                @totalsonic You know, I'm curious. Since your Volla has dual sim on UT - Since Verizon is in the process of shutting off CDMA, and all new SIMs are LTE/VoLTE by default, I wonder if that gives you an option to use Verizon for data on your Volla? You'd have to try it with an IMEI agnostic MVNO such as Red Pocket or US Mobile if you're curious to try it.

                  The first concrete developments of the implementation of VoLTE technology in Ubuntu Touch have begun. The UBports Foundation has commissioned the German telecom company Sysmocom in order to be able to draw up an informed plan of action.

                  According to the report received, the Vollaphone could be the first device to benefit from this communication protocol. It could then be extended to other devices.

                  The report also tells us that this technology is specific to each device/chipset manufacturer (vendor blobs).
                  So even if this might take some time, the latest news seem to be very promising 😉

                  Here is the official communication from UBports:

                    @stanwood Thanks for the link.

                    It is said, in the article : "A nice side effect of this approach of developing an open source IMS client for Ubuntu Touch is that it will also enable VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi, calling over a Wi-Fi network with your mobile phone number). Both VoLTE and VoWiFi are based on the 3GPP’s IMS framework.A nice side effect of this approach of developing an open source IMS client for Ubuntu Touch is that it will also enable VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi, calling over a Wi-Fi network with your mobile phone number). implementation will also be very useful for VoWiFi.
                    . A good point.

                      @rocket2nfinity said in Verizon voice, data, sms not working:

                      I'd be glad to test a SIM if you want to send me one - you can pm me for address - but given that I think I already know the answer is going to be negative, given general experience with US UT users with Verizon is a no go to date, I don't want to spend the cash on one myself. I can tell you that Red Pocket Mobile's Verizon network SIM's all use CDMA though - which the Volla using UT definitely does not support. At this point AT&T is working well for LTE/4G on the Volla in Central Texas where I am (which apparently has a healthy amount of band 850 in use) - but this is not the case for everywhere in the USA. T-mobile is working well for calls and SMS with Volla (tested this in Southern California as well) - but it is limited to 2G data with Volla, and seems to only get errors with MMS as well.

                      Best regards,
                      Steve Berson

                        @totalsonic The base network is still listed as CDMA because they haven't turned it off everywhere yet. But all new devices require LTE protocol for a year now I think. When they are done, it will only be LTE /VoLTE, so not worth the effort to support CDMA, although upstream ofono does have partial support.

                            @rocket2nfinity - that is good to hear. Cellular data working for that does not surprise me, but I seriously doubt there will be any call or sms support with it. Then again - please let us know if we are all to be pleasantly surprised after you test it!

                              @totalsonic

                              I purchased a 30 day Red Pocket sim so I could test. I went with the "GSMT" network which I believe is using T-Mobile.

                              I am having consistent problems getting reliable voice, data, or sms. I have tried many different APN settings.

                              I have tried APN settings from here: https://help.redpocket.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003781067-GSMT-Manual-APN-Settings

                              No matter what I try it seems to be very intermittent. Sometimes I get 2G and sometimes L to show but it seems as soon as I make a successful phone call I lose internet afterwards.

                              Also, I noticed "Reset APN Settings" does not appear to actually reset the APN settings.

                              Any help or suggestions from someone on T-Mobile in the US?

                                @sringgen Are you in a remote area? Because it sounds like you're between two weak towers, or just on the edge of one. I would suggest using cellmapper.net to find out what is the strongest gsm signal near you. GSMT is T-mobile. GSMA(AT&T) might be better.

                                  I finally contacted Red Pocket support and was given the APN settings below. Now I have reliable 4G data.

                                  However, I can only send texts. I can't receive any yet. I also can't send pictures.

                                  It is interesting that the settings they sent have some fields that are not available in Ubuntu Touch APN Settings screen.

                                  Anyone have suggestions?

                                      I read through that thread. It sounds like this only works if you keep Wifi off, so not really a valid option in my opinion.

                                      For all US users, it sounds like AT&T is currently the only reliable option.

                                            @rocket2nfinity said in Verizon voice, data, sms not working:

                                            VoLTE

                                            I didn't see this until after I had my Pixel 3a all set up, I'm in the same boat as you. Where can I donate to directly support getting VoLTE or support for Verizon of any kind? I know I can donate to Ubuntu Touch in general, but for me this is the singular biggest issue with me making the switch, so I want to support it directly
