Despite that I would love not to depend on Google, I have to sync my UT calendar and contacts with my Google accounts, as this is what my job uses. But it seems that Google is changing security policies and will not allow UT to sync any more with their services. This is the email I received:

        "Hello,

Although you do not have to do anything, we want to inform you that it is possible the following applications stop accessing some of the data of your Google Account, such as the content of Gmail. If these applications do not meet the requirements of the new data policy before the stipulated date, they will not be able to access the account after July 15, 2019.

        Ubuntu

This change is part of our constant efforts to guarantee the privacy and protection of your data.

In the Google Account you can check, manage and delete whenever you want the applications that you have granted access to."

Is there anything that can be done to keep the ability to sync to Google apps?

I recently got an email from Google saying "Ubuntu" hasn't updated their certificates, so "Ubuntu" won't be allowed to access anything from my account. By "Ubuntu", I assume they mean Ubuntu Touch.

@Gimped As the tread you originally posted in was old and these items are linked I moved your comment here. Hope you don't mind.

I am guessing less secure apps is marked on both your google accounts so a lot more people could be getting these emails. I have not yet. Lets see.

@Lakotaubp I have two Google accounts, one marked as less secure (personal) and the other one not (corporate). I don't know from which one this warning comes from.

I received the same message. What I really don't like about it is "some data" part without full specififcation:

some of the data of your Google Account, such as the content of Gmail.

I got the notice a few days ago as well. Luckily, I've begun migrating to a Protonmail account...

                    According to Google Account info:

                    Ubuntu
Has access to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Contacts, Google Drive, Google Hangouts, Google Photos

@kwah I think they put Gmail just as an example, but they will block access to your account generally if the access request comes form an app identified as "Ubuntu".

                        @wgarcia I understand.

So the question is, will UBports do something about it?

@kwah Let's open issues to see if somebody can take a look to it. This one is for calendar app:
                          https://gitlab.com/ubports/apps/calendar-app/issues/172

And this one in the general project, since the Contact app is part of the core OS (I think):
                          https://gitlab.com/ubports/core/seeds/ubuntu-touch/issues/1

Feel free to confirm/contribute to these issues (or better, help fixing it)

Just had mine arrive. The problem will be with the "app" named Ubuntu. So guessing that is the certificate part of the issue. If this will affect Dekko2, contacts app etc. or just your Ubuntu device as a whole I have no idea. If the fix is system wide or by app needs someone with more knowledge than me.

@Lakotaubp I haven't receive such email yet on my 3 google accounts 🙂
Perhaps it's because I'm now using app password instead of enabling less secured apps.

                                Edit. Just found it.

@kugiigi If that's solves it, then nothing needs to be done at the UBports side. Let's wait a couple of days and see if you don't get the nice email.

It would be good that those affected report if they have "less secure" in their Google account or not, and if they got the email. As I said above, I have two accounts, one is "less secure" and the other one not, so I can't tell which one is generating the email.

@kugiigi yeah I didn't received neither. I use my google account only for dekko2 with the special pass. I think thats the right way to proceed

@kugiigi, @Lakotaubp What do you mean by "special pass"?
And how one can setup, for example, Contacts to use it?

@kwah App password is a security setting on your Google Account. Easiest way is to " google" search for it. I need to look into it myself.

Well it is specific to 'Ubuntu' whatever that is, as there is very little information to go on.
I logged into my account and I have two apps I have authorized: Ubuntu and Gnome-Evolution. Are we sure this notice effects uboorts phones? The dates listed by Google coincide with my setting up desktop installs... so I'm not even sure this is the phone.

It was actually quite difficult to find a reliable source on this, but I did.

It appears that this only restricts access to GMail (and later, Google Drive) to any applications which are not specially verified by Google. This should not affect Ubuntu Touch to my knowledge.
