Ubuntu Touch Q&A 63 This Saturday 16th Of November At 19:00 UTC

The bionic branch of unity8 is currently 153 commits behind xenial.
Q1. Now that daily builds of focal (the next LTS) are being published for arm64 server and amd64 desktop, when will UBports bounce over bionic and focus on focal?
Q2. If focal proves to be problematic for some older devices, will UBports maintain those older devices on xenial while bringing focal to compatible devices, such as the PinePhone?

UBports yesterday has began to communicate about the Volla Phone on twitter, facebook, mastodon, UBports forum and telegram UBports newsgroup.
Is there a kind of partnership between UBports and Volla and/or what can you say about to clarify the situation ? -
@UBportsNews
Is there a repository of UBports videos?
And might a PeerTubechannelserver be a good thing for us? -
Hi! I really love the os, the way everything is a swipe away is great and combined with the privacy and flexibility of Linux really makes it a dream However, I live in Sweden and here you are basically digitally handicapped if you don't have an app called "mobilt bankid" (basically a 2FA that is used for identification with the state and all the banks) so until anbox starts to work well i can't use it as a daily driver So my question is what is the timeline/status for anbox? Will you focus more on it now that the edge channel merge is done? How much do you collaborate with the developers of anbox? All and any information on the subject of Android app support would be greatly appreciated
Keep up the great work!

Can you define a (approximate) date for the first version of STABLE TELEports ?
-
Have any thoughts been put into making a new companion cloud service, like the defunct ubuntu.one or the librem one service, preferrably based on Nextcloud?
Might be a nice way to collect donations for Ubports, i.e. offering this service at a price that also supports further development. There are non-profit projects like Disroot.org that could be a blue-print. -
@poVoq I love this and would be happy to help.

Somewhat related question: how does the current push notification system work and is there a chance to integrate a self-hosted Gotify notification system directly into UT?
There is already an app for it https://open-store.io/app/gotify.bhdouglass but deeper integration so that for example a link send via a desktop browser extension like these:
https://github.com/mskian/gotify-push
https://github.com/rorpage/gotify-chrome
https://git.fossdaily.xyz/caltlgin/gotify-firefoxWould automatically open in the Morph browser, similar to how "send to" works with an Firefox account or via an Google account. And maybe also a way in reverse to read later on a desktop?
@geekvine yeah, I would also be able to help with that, but the question is also if the legal situation around the German foundation would allow for something like that.

Any info on app availablity for arm64 devices such as the op3

I don't know if this is asking for a device port but will you guys ever be posting a GSI recovery image of Ubuntu touch?

Reposting a question asked elsewhere: Will libhybris be required for running UT on the Volla Phone?

Will libhybris be required for running UT on the Volla Phone?
Also, will libhybris be required for running UT on the PinePhone?
I'm under the impression that libhybris will not be required for running UT on the PinePhone, but maybe I'm wrong. I hope that, during the Q&A, someone will confirm with certainty.

Q1 about Volla Phone: in the Volla kickstarter main page is said we don't have to give up the Volla user experience in an alternative free operation system...does this include UT? if the answer is yes will this UX option in UT be possible only on Volla Phone or will this option be also possible "upstream" in other devices supported by UT?
Q2 about Volla Phone: actually I can choose between Volla OS and Nemo OS as pre-installed OS. will UT be added as a third option?
Q3 about Volla Phone: how can we go from one OS to another? it will be possible to use UBports installer to install all OS supported by the volla phone?
-
Q: I am wondering, what will happen to the prototype with UT if the campaign isnt successful? Will the knowledge get lost or will they share it with the community, so maybe some other devices with similar hardware can be ported?

This has already been answered and no, hybris (and thus android) is not required for PinePhone, Librem 5, or Raspberry Pi images (nor on x86 PCs).
Basically, if the hardware has drivers that can work with upstream kernels and Mesa, then hybris is not needed. If it's a device which requires Android kernel and Android binary blobs to get hardware working, then hybris is required.

Thanks! And yep, I thought that libhybris was unneeded for running UT on the PinePhone (and the Librem 5), but I wasn't sure.
I hope that, during the Q&A, my question regarding whether libhybris will be needed for running UT on the Volla Phone will be answered. (If the Volla Phone does require libhybris, I don't see what sets it apart from numerous higher performance (and lower cost) Android phones that also could be ported.)

I guess its already mentioned somewhere but I couldn't find it: which version of AOSP will the volla phone be based on?
@GizmoChicken I don't have any porting knowledge but the good thing here may be, that volla lays or pays the halium ground work to support a newer android version. Then making it much easier to port other phones based on the newer android version... making it interesting/special not for the individual volla buyer, but for the project and community as a whole... (someone please correct me if writing nonsense ^^) -

Sure, if Volla does the work to upgrade libhybris/halium (or at least financially supports such work), then viva la Volla!
But if that's not Volla's plan, I'd suggest that, at least for now, UBports should focus on bringing the best possible product to the PinePhone and/or the Librem 5, which would be better platforms for showcasing UT to the general public. Hopefully by the time that UT is in a good state on the PinePhone and/or the Librem 5, libhybris/halium will have caught up, allowing for easier porting to newer (Android 10+) off-the-shelf Android phones (or better still, installing UT as a Generic System Images (GSI) on such off-the-shelf phones, if feasible).

How big is your head- and heartache after seeing the responses to your thread: Want To Develop UT And Need A Device?

According to the Volla kickstarter page, Volla will partner with Gigaset to manufacture the Volla Phone.
In what ways will the hardware for the Volla Phone differ from phones currently available from Gigaset, such as the less expensive Gigaset GS290?
