It basically depends on you. Ubuntu Touch for now is compatible with very few and somewhat old devices (check up the website). It is not as polished as Android, and there are quite fewer apps available. Even for supported devices, there are shortcomings. Are you willing to purchase a used phone to install UT on? That's about the only option for now, but if you're willing to wait, there are two new Linux phones being developed that should run UT; they should be released for mass production in 2020. Look for PinePhone and Librem5 topics on the forum.
I purchased a used OnePlus One myself last month, switched my SIM card from my Android device to it 2 days ago. I really like UT, even with its shortcomings, I want to support the project.
Another choice you have is to install an Android derived OS on your current phone, based on Android Open Source Project like LineageOS, and devoid of Google apps; provided your device is supported. I'll tell you though, UT is much easier to install thanks to its GUI installer. And AOSP is still controlled by Google.

@Ken Yes you are very much in the right place. This will give you some good general info https://ubports.com/meet-the-community Yes the devices https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/ are not the newest at present but all work well. I am using an OPO as my daily device and have been for a few years now. I would say most required functions work very well though it has to be said the app range is still limited compared to you know who. But that's not the point.
There will be the PinePhone available around March next year. This is a very exciting project we are working with, a new device shipping with Ubuntu Touch pre installed. Have a look here https://www.pine64.org/2019/09/05/september-update-the-pinephone-is-real-shipping-soon/
If you are after an OS that is all about you and how you want your device to work for you not someone else you are most definitely in the right place.
Have a look around and if you have any further questions just pop back. -
hello guys, im buy used oneplus one 2 weeks ago, im decided to install ubuntu touch too. but my question is. which one is good for a newbie like me. the stable version or the edge version?
im currently waiting my replacement power button. cause my power button is broken and ubuntu touch doesn't have double-tap to wake up function, and volume rocker to wake up.

@xsetiadi Hi,
The easiest answer is for you to use the stable version, this is my daily driver and I want to avoid most of the problems edge channel can still have. But if you're just curious and a little bit adventurous than I heard (read in fact) that Edge is pretty neat and advanced so you can give it a try.
By the way it has been 2 years now that I don't use android. And I don't miss it.
I can create the few apps that I need, so I'm a happy free man now.BR
-
@xsetiadi If you start with stable get used to that then perhaps try Development (easy to change back and forth from System settings, Upates, Update Settings, Channels) which is the very latest daily build of UT.
Edge is where UT is moving to and can be a bit twitchy at times but well worth a look but maybe not for daily use for everyone just yet. -
5 months ago im using sailfish os on Xperia x, but im kinda boring with its pretty interfaces, because from teenager im usually using Debian/Ubuntu based Linux on desktop. so im not usually using Linux based on fedora (like on sailfish os)
the only thing im miss if using ubuntu touch is maybe chatting apps like WhatsApp. because people in my country is still using this rather than using telegram.
but anbox is worth a shoot.

I'm using the RC channel.

did you know how to root anbox, sir? or it's same way to root anbox on desktop?
-
@xsetiadi FYI I just looked in the Open Store and there are 3 WhatsApp web apps available.
-
@Ken Absolutely! If you're not using a device that UT is supported on, a Nexus 5 or OnePlus One can be had pretty cheap. You can also look in the Open Store to see what apps are available that will replace what you're using now in Android.
-
@Photojoe4 WhatsApp web needs android WhatsApp version to run bro.
-
@xsetiadi Sorry, I didn't know (I don't use it myself). Is there a desktop/web based version of WhatsApp that doesn't require an Android login?
-
@Photojoe4 im hear a rumour WhatsApp will have a new feature that can log in separate like a telegram, so if WhatsApp on android not online, we can still use WhatsApp on desktop.
but I don't know exactly when this feature is available.

@normandc Thanks...I'd rather stay away from Google run devices just out of principle, I have a Galaxy S9 Edge, not sure what other systems it is supported by though
-
@Lakotaubp Thanks...I think my main question was going to lead to "Can I install UT on my current Samsung Galaxy S9 Edge to ditch Google altogether, and will it interfere with the function of my phone at all, such as my phone number...or am I stuck in the weird world of preloaded phones that can't be altered?
-
@Ken These are the current supported devices https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/ with the PinePhone planned for March next year https://www.pine64.org/2019/09/05/september-update-the-pinephone-is-real-shipping-soon/

That question has already been answered.
