    • Installing Android after Ubuntu Touch: Fix sensors issue

      Hi there,

if you ever want to install an Android-based distro after Ubuntu Touch was installed, you will notice that no sensors work anymore. The root cause was already identified by guys on the Fairphone forum some time ago description is more to the end of the thread, so be patient and read it in full - but here in UT side nobody of course noticed that, as sensors keep working correctly in UT πŸ™‚

What happens is that the necessary Android selinux contexts are being somehow removed from the sensor folder in the persist partition. We would need to analyze why this happens, but probably the files are being rewritten from the Android container in UT and as UT does not use selinux, they are set to unlabeled, like so:

      ./sensors/registry/registry:
      total 668
      drwxr-xr-x 2 system system u:object_r:vendor_persist_sensors_file:s0 12288 2023-11-21 22:10 .

Unfortunately the solution to this is, as described in the Fairphone forum thread, a bit cumbersome:

      • The bootloader needs to be unlocked. If you happen to have all your data already in this Android installation and you have locked the bootloader again, you will loose all your data during this process.
      • You have to install Magisk. Depending on the Android version this involves patching the boot.img file or creating a custom recovery
      • With Magisk you can obtain a root shell and the execute the necessary restorecon command

It would be awesome to find out if we can avoid this situation somehow. Unfortunately I just dont have the time for the moment, but I can confirm the fix worked as described over there.

    • RE: Forum mail activation might not work

There is not much we can do, as we run our own mailserver the big industryΒ΄s services might slowdon/filter that traffic. Its basically they give a .... about anything thats independently hosted and flag it or drop it.

On my private email but also sometimes with UBports I am automatically added to GMail spam for every user I ever wrote to. For UBports mass mailing we even use a paid SMTP server as otherwise not much would come through.

@adorsaz There are a few complications when changing the push protocol. For the moment we already working on a unified push => ubuntu push bridge, and so you might want to join this Telegram group: https://t.me/+7zQzeeDVa38yZTIx We can discuss the things there in better detail πŸ™‚

Wow thats fantastic news! I am really grateful that I could help TELEports to become a strong App in this ecosystem...

Nevertheless it is an effort that needs continuous contribution. And I cannot do so much (at the moment) for TELEports. I would be glad if one or two more people could help co-maintaining it, especillay for the larger Telegram/tdlib upgrade stories that are always a struggle.

    • RE: Why does UT not have assisted GPS?

HI, I am with UT since 2015/16 and we have discussed this topic a lot. The main blockers are:

      • aGPS solely relying on cell tower coordinates is feasable for a certain range of devices, but not all of them. Its a feature deeply buried in the firmware of the phone and exposed via Android blobs where we have not much influence if it really works or not
      • aGPS via WLAN AP names which is used by Android a lot is a simple matter of cost: There are no free databases and so we would need to charge for that in some way (or, maybe we could allow inserting your own token somehow, and you pay for yourself). But technically challenging.

We often take stuff on Android and iOS to be free for granted, but keep in mind that their cloud services require a lot of money to be operated on dedicated hardware and utilizing databases of other 3rd parties, and this is simply too much of a burden for a small OS project.

The same BTW goes for maps and navigation, though we got this currently nicely covered.

While checking I found that I could enable ActivityPub protocol for this forum, meaning that you can follow anyone here from Mastodon rather easily, and also you can follow stuff from Mastodon here in this forum. The only problem is I currently did not find out how it should work πŸ™‚

If you search for "NodeBB ActivityPub" though there is plenty of resources, maybe someone has more luck than me πŸ™‚

    • Welcome to UBports International!

      Hello Community,

We have decided to add this new section to our Forums, called UBports International. In this section, for now, you'll find the subsections for three different languages: Dutch, German and French.
We believe that this section will lower the language barrier for some existing and new forum members. It should allow more people to use the UBports Forum to ask and answer questions about Ubuntu Touch, stay in contact with the community and to get and give support with apps and the OS more freely.

These three languages were chosen because we have an existing user base made up by people who speak these languages, and importantly because we have moderators who are native speakers. In the future we will consider adding other languages, if both of these conditions are met. For now, we will start with these three so that we can see whether it works as expected.

Please remember that normal Form rules still apply to this section. So If you speak French, German or Dutch, Welcome... come in and say bonjour, guten Tag or hoi!

    • RE: Install with ubports installer resulted in having a debug kernel

      @Keneda Just a few 2 cents her:

      • Yes for porting we often set the Android build to build a so-called userdebug image. That ensures certain behaivour, but I am unsure if we really need that. So it could be that the FP4 kernel built during our porting build is set to debug since userdebug target is being used.

Someone could explore this by trying to build their own port with instructions from porting group and then see which flag is being used. It would be good to finally address this, since debug kernels are potentially slower than release.

@Moem I am afraid no one so far did develop any middleware or App for UT to let the PineTime connect to it. Its totally feasable, but would need at least 1 or 2 devs getting their hands dirty.
