@Futura A lot of us use Cinny, a matrix client. And then matrix bridges to signal and some other services. We also heavily rely on Telegram through the app Teleports for all of the UT groups.

      @Futura

Report issues on the Gitlab issue tracker for Fairphone 5. I'm out in the woods, so I can't find the direct link right now, but I imagine you'll find the issue tracker somewhere near the source code listed on the device page.

    • RE: Check on features before to buy/install FP5

@Futura I'm located in Norway. Not EU. We have 2G fallback for a few more months on my network, but I've confirmed it is not falling back to 2G while calling. 3G has been gone for a while already. However, I don't remeber seeing reports of FP5 users in the US yet, I have no idea if the bands in use are compatible. I would wait for more reports and look into the specific bands used.

I believe there is a couple of Xiaomi phones confirmed to work over VoLTE in the US, have a look at the thread about reports of working VoLTE devices.

    • RE: Where do I report when something works?

You could report something working on that device's gitlab issuetracker, on the issue that was previously not working. Or you could mention it in the device telegram channel, if it seems relevant for other users and the device maintainers to know.

    • RE: long time for waydroid init

It can take a long time. Like really long. I use waydroid helper if I need to initialize or reinstall, then leave the screen on with the phone charging. Sometimes it takes five minutes, sometimes 50 minutes. I'm also on FP5.

    • RE: Nordea ID banking app question in Ubuntu Touch on Fairphone 4

I've found that the Norwegian Obos banking app works in Waydroid. Vipps, BankID and DNB does not. Very few banking apps work out of the box in Waydroid.

I've not installed all of the fixes to get microG or gapps working in Waydroid, though. I was crazy enough to transfer my buss pass to Waydroid (Ruter app, works great) early on, and due the limitations on how many times you can transfer the yearly ticket between phones, I've not dared messing too much with the installation, as I'm not ok with the potential financial hit. I'll experiment more when it is time to renew the buss pass.

What is the general state of emergency alert messages in UT? It seemes available in the UI, but can users expect it to work in an actual emergency?

Could this be added to the device pages as one of the items in the check list, if it is expected to work?

    • RE: FP5 bugs - SD card and Fairbuds XL headphones not working

I have never tried using an SD card yet, but I have connected a lot of bluetooth stuff to my FP5. If I experience the behavior you describe, I run "sudo systemctl restart bluetooth" in the terminal and retry pairing/connecting. This always helps, but I have had to make the phone "forget" a device a couple of times.

You mention other roms - it is very important to be on the Android version mentioned on the FP5 device page in the installation instructions before installing Ubuntu Touch. Installing over another rom can result in everything from more bugs to an unbootable phone.

Lastly I want to encourage bug reporting here if you encounter something nobody has opened an issue on yet, or you can make a comment on an existing issue thread: https://gitlab.com/ubports/porting/reference-device-ports/android11/fairphone-5/fairphone-fp5/-/issues/?sort=created_date&state=opened&first_page_size=100

    • RE: Mailo

@Benoit-NL This seems like the Mailo-mail-web bookmark from Open Store. It has not been updated since 2022, which is a very long time in web developement. I would consider this app abandoned, and try to find another solution.

I don't have a Mailo-account, but I would try things in this order:

      • Dekko, e-mail app from the Open Store where you can register you e-mail accounts and send and receive mails. A bit similar to how Thunderbird works, if you have tried that in the past. You would probably need to use IMAP to configure the e-mail client.
      • Download Mimi and uWolf. Log into your Mailo account and test these two browsers.
      • If they don't work, learn how to install "clicks" and get the uFirefox browser in stead.
      • Lastly, install Waydroid (a program that emulates an Android phone) and check your mail through a modern browser there, or the Mailo app if they have one that works on non Google phones.

    • RE: Mailo

@Benoit-NL As wgarcia mentions, the other browsers are in alpha or beta versions at the moment, but I use them as a supplement to be able to us UT as my main phone. Some to look up in OpenStore:

      • Mimi Browser
      • uWolf.
      • Sapot

You can also check out the Firefox click, which has to be manually downloaded from gitlab and then installed. https://gitlab.com/debclick/uFirefox/-/jobs/9866929411/artifacts/browse/build/aarch64-linux-gnu/app/ .

As for FP5-specific bug reports, these can be sent here: https://gitlab.com/ubports/porting/reference-device-ports/android11/fairphone-5/fairphone-fp5/-/issues/?sort=created_date&state=opened&first_page_size=100. Just check first if the bug has already been reported.

Another possible solution to your problem is using the UT native e-mail app Dekko, where you would have to add your Mailo-account through imap or some other technology.

I recommend joining the Telegram groups.

    • Backups and file sharing

I am wondering if there perhaps is a better way of doing backups and moving files than what I am doing currently.

      • I either manually move files via MTP, good old cable connected to a computer.
      • Or by uploading/downloading files in the browser to Jottacloud, with whichever browser works the best.

What are your best Ubuntu Touch ways of moving files between devices currently?

    • RE: Check on features before to buy/install FP5

@rdfrs I'm not sure I understand your question, but I use 5G on my FP5 for surfing the web, chat messages etc. when I'm not on a wifi network, as long as there is a 5G connection available. Sometimes I only have 4G/LTE available where I am. I can use 5G on my phone (it switches automatically between 2G, 4G/LTE and 5G depending on what's available), or I can turn on the hotspot available in the network settings menu to make a wifi hotspot to connect my computer with and share internet access. It works very well.

5G is included in my regular phone plan that I pay for every month.

    • RE: Check on features before to buy/install FP5

Hi! I've been daily driving Ubuntu Touch since around March.

      1. Bluetooth:
It has been working really well for months now. My car is too old, so I haven't tried any bluetooth stuff there, but it works well for connecting compatible smart watches, music listening on my stereo and through headphones. Calls work very well through my headphones.

      2. GPS:
It works, but with the usual UT limitations because there is no A-GPS. Getting first fix, or getting a fix after not having used gps for a while takes some time, up to an hour, and you need to be outside or close to a window to get the fix.

      3. IDLE:
Some power saving functions have been implemented, but app suspension seems incomplete at the moment, at least on 20.04 devel. I get around 1,5 days of battery time on moderate use, but have to charge each evening if I use the phone a lot.

      4. NFC
I haven't tried it yet, but it seems there are few apps for UT that actually use NFC. I would not expect using NFC to connect to a radio to work.

      Other notable stuff:
      Calls: Works fine, including VoLTE.
SMS/MMS: I have sometimes not received every MMS sent to me.
      Waydroid: Works well.
Connection to PC: Works well both for Linux and Windows for me.
Wifi/network: Sometimes disconnects from wifi, and I have to manually reconnect. If I lose Wifi connection, I have to manually turn on mobile data.

It is also worth to note that the FP5 has no stable release channel yet. Development is very active on this phone right now, and new and improved things turn up often. I am very happy with my FP5, but some workarounds are needed now and then.

Edit: I just want to add that this is my experience with the phone, with my particular installation. Refer to the device page to see a more general list.

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 166 Call for questions

I've been trying to rekindle my programming skills lately, and I've tried to find a good learning path for Ubuntu touch app development, but a lot of the documentation is marked as legacy. What part of the app development docs is suitable for beginners that have difficulties understanding what legacy stuff is still useful and what would be a hindrance to get started properly?
