GPS Not Working on Redmi Note 9S

I have been enjoying Ubuntu Touch and working well on my Redmi Note 9S device and waydroid, credit to the guys working hard and supporting so many devices.

Before I making it my daily phone, was wondering can anyone guide me on how to get the GPS working on Unav or even waydroid?

Based on the device page it says the phone should support GPS:

Is there anything I need to do or consider to get the GPS working for Unav or Waydroid, I have installed in the last month and updated recently?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

You need to be outside of any building, open wide ground, and wait 5 to 15 mn for first GPS fix in unav to take effect after a device boot/reboot.

I don't think GPS work in waydroid, but i don't have it so can't be sure.

Hi I try this afternoon about gps in waydroid and it doesn't work.

In mys Redmi note Note 9S with test_gps command I have
"gps interface not founs Bye!"

Do I need to go outside to gps fix anyway? Or there s something else to do to make gps interface works?

@phiibuntu This error message can be dismiss...
The fact is that you have to open a nav application, force the screen on (using Ubuntu Touch Tweak Tool), and leave it outside for 20 to 25 minutes so the unit can acquire the first GPS signal.
Then, the next satellite signal acquisitions will be much faster...

I try yesterday morning about 30mn, I'll try again this morning.
Going outside (dog walk ) for 30Mn doesn't synchronize gps
I'll try a little bit longer this morning.

@phiibuntu Sensor status app from the OpenStore should show if GPS is working at least. Under GPS- Source Status gives No Error, Name is Ubuntu and Method is Satelite on my OP5

@phiibuntu GPS under waydroid doesn't work. You have to use it with any of UTs apps that uses the GPS services following the instructions here: https://docs.ubports.com/en/latest/userguide/dailyuse/location.html

Yes I know I use Unav to test GPS on my smartphone today 1hour in car witout have GPS synchronising I think there's a problem with Xiaomi redmi note 9S

@nitanmarcel GPS doesn't work in WayDroid but location does if you configure UnifiedNlp with MozillaNlpBackend in Micro-G settings:

thanks for information I'll test that.
But I really need gps on my phone (for a professional use in deplacement)
Waiting for -20-30mn for the first gps fix I an use it like that, but without gps I can't).

In car may not be good enough for a first fix. The phone needs to be outside for 20-30 minutes in a weak signal area.

Also it is necessary to keep Unav active all that time either by preventing the screen from locking, or (my preferred way) of preventing application suspension using the UT Tweak Tool.

I was preventing app suspension with tweak tool yet
1 hour in car I was thinking it was enough. But I take the point and I'll try 30mn in a field to be sure that gps fix can work

Last try this morning GPS doesn't synchronize 30 mn outside nothing.

unfortunatly I think I'll have to go back to another OS, it's sad I think UT have a lot of qualities

@phiibuntu Maybe try to reinstall UT with installer to fix this (no wipe), or try OTA-21 upgrade to see if it solves the issue...
GPS should work.

I can't reinstall without wipe there's too much issue on Xaomi redmi note 9S.
(error 1 error 126 etc. bad repertory, bad rights I think).

Only way ton install UT is :
Install MUI officiale firmware (Android 10 not 11) so totally wipe UT
then use ut installer: and it works nice

@phiibuntu Hi all, I got this working today, it turned out to be quite simple. Now, I am unsure of all the caveats, but this is what I did and it worked after not behaving for a long time:

1. Turn location on

2. Go to system settings > security & privacy > locking amd unlocking > lock when idle: Never

3. Get the SensorStatus app

4. Set it to never suspend with the UT Tweak tool app

5. Reboot

6. Open sensosstatus app, go to GPS

7. Leave next to the window for some time (it wasnt excessively long, but i also wasnt paying attention). I think the point is to stay still.

8. After some time it got a lock and started reporting my location! Unav and whatever else works now!

So are all these steps necessary? Idunno. But its what i did and it worked! Hope this helps!
