The state of Volla x23, for all users out there.
-
Hi,
So for me, Ubuntu Touch, nothing works. It's almost like a comedy how absolutely nothing works. Now this is not critique to UBports, nor Volla really. But the combination of them two, multiboot and first release of rom, is so confusing for me I can't figure out where to even start debugging UT.
So all I want is to know if you have the same problems.
This doesn't work for me.
Waydroid helper.
Waydroid init.
Waydroid updater.
Apt install anything, for example waydroid as remount, rw.
Waydroid in libertine, nor anbox.
Update channel, developer or candidate. And more, I can't do a thing accept these clickapps.
Anyone else?

@Rinkeby For all WayDriod issues try here https://t.me/waydroidonut on Telegram or the Forum here https://forums.ubports.com/category/102/waydroid if Waydroid runs on the Volla x23 as I don not know. Please remember WayDroid is a seperete project to UT so best go direct. As for the update channels if the dual boot system on the Volla is not working correctly then that will stop UT channels work correctly I guess. UT does not again directly support dual boot.
To install Libertine use system Settings in UT and make sure the screen is set to stay on in Battery setting till the install is complete. I also don't think Waydroid is meant to run inside Libertine. Two different things for two different jobs but the WaydDroid group should help with that.
Think you a few issues over lapping and stopping each other but as I don't own a Volla can only point you at the other group. -
@Rinkeby The repository for UT and Volla X23 is https://gitlab.com/groups/ubports/porting/reference-device-ports/halium12/volla-x23/-/issues .
You can find some infos or put comments in this issue open about Waydroid : https://gitlab.com/ubports/porting/reference-device-ports/halium12/volla-x23/volla-vidofnir/-/issues/1 -
@domubpkm Do you know if these issues are related to the dual boot or just UT? I thought UT was working fairly well on the Volla phones on it's own (let's exclude WayDroid for now) and if that is so is there a Volla Forum with a discussion on dual boot. This is just for my info really as I have no direct Volla use experience.
-
@Rinkeby Volla have a FAQ section on their web site with information about setting up/running dual boot. You cannot update via OTA or change channels. You update within dual boot when an updated image is released. Cheers

@Lakotaubp Hello. I just did a quick search this morning to see if there was an open repo regarding the Volla X23 and UT. I didn't push my research any further.
-
Thanks guys! Pretty helpfull. I look into the repo and links you sent me.
When it comes to X23 and UT as running with stability and compability its pretty good. I like the default usability. Only finger print lock that doesnt work hardware wise.
But, after that im locked.
Especially when sudo mount -o remount, rw / doesnt work for me. (Even if I typed it wrong this time)
-
To add,
I can't do things that I seen in tutorials. Not necessarily waydroid, but terminal stuff.
-
@Rinkeby to be fair anything that requires you to remount the system read/write is not officially supported anyhow. So it should not be surprising if it fails.
In addition, Volla's dual boot system is also not supported by the UBports community. If you are having trouble, it might be a good idea to check on the Volla forums for help with what you are trying to do.
-
Yeah.
Well one of the links here showed how to install waydroid at least. By linking folders and stuff. It worked. And it runns pretty smooth.
So one down.
-
@Rinkeby Waydroid is working fine for me on the 23X. I followed a guide somewere on this forum.
On thing to remmber is after using waydroid helper to launch waydroid the screen resets to the wallper and hidden menu bar with waydroid not visible. Then open a terminl and enter
waydroid show-full-ui
Anbox is obsolete as far as i know. Waydroid replaced it..
Look for the guide that mentions the show-full-ui command
-
Thanks.
I got waydroid installed. And it works smooth. But, it freezes after a while. Memory hole I guess. YouTube is no great in browser. And as you pointed out. Annoying way to boot it.
Its all instable for me. But I wait for the next update. And keep using lovely Volla in the meantime. It's better than stock android.
But can't wait for a stable UT!
-
@Rinkeby Yes best to have patience. The waydroid freezing seems to be after it has been idle for a short while. Seems like it sleeps and doesn't wake up. I don't often see it freeze now as I stay 'on the move' when using waydroid.
Waydroid is still very new. Not long ago it didn't exist and we were over a barrel. Now 75% of my essential android apps are usable.
Also the 16.04 to 20.04 revisions have taken up all the team resources for many months. We should see a lot of progress once the team have recuperated.
Personally I'm very happy that the x23 does everything I need with no real issues holding me back. Hopefully you will feel more reassured soon.
-
@Rinkeby I use the UT Youtube webapp. It works fine for me.
Its best to only use waydroid for things that can't be done in UT. I wouldn't watch Youtube in waydroid for example. I'm not clear where you are trying to watch Youtube and you probably appreciate the point I just made already so this comment is for the benefit of anyone new to Ubuntu Touch.
-
@treebeard Yes, thats true. Youtube works in UT browser very well. But I sort of like Duckduck with its way of cleaning things up, trackers and all. But still, yes. waydroid is only for what can not be done. The way I want to keep it in the future. Feels strange to use android on top of linux anyway.
But I hope some day Linux converts android apps, I have no idea why its not in full process when F-droid is very capable and open source.
Thanks for the answers.

I can simply add, that I used Xenial on a different phone, with no dual boot or anything. And its not even close. Its not the same. Ubuntu Touch rocks on that phone. It is really nice what you guys have done. So for Volla X23, I just have to wait.
Thanks, you can mark it as solved. And you also manage to solve it a bit with your links.

@treebeard said in The state of Volla x23, for all users out there.:
We should see a lot of progress once the team have recuperated.
Is it really possible ?
-
@domubpkm As a former software engineer I'm confident lots of cakes and biscuits will go a long way...
-
When will there finally be a subcategory for the volla x23? The device has been around for a long time now.
