AFAIK

IMEI authenticate the hardware to help fight against stolen devices.
The SIM card is what authenticate the user to a network (it's in the name: Subscriber Identity Module).

So even if you would fake your IMEI you wouldn't fake your SIM hence being tracked.
And if a network is not able to identify (and track you) they will not grant you any service...

If one don't want to be tracked, they should avoid cellphones.

I've seen this in some applications. Does the button come back if you go to concertina mode (app spread) and then back to the app?

Maybe because it requires money and people to maintain such a tool ?
And not all open source project have their own git, that's why tools like sourceforge or gitlab have so much open source project hosted on them.

indeed, I can still check write/read permissions for Ubuntu Touch /image, but this is not ideal. As a developer, I made image not temporary, write persistent.
