    • Ubuntu Touch Audiocast (UTA) Episode 36 Discussion

      THE LINK: [https://ubports.com/blog/ubports-blog-1/post/ubuntu-touch-audiocast-036-gal-app-agos-islands-175](link url)

      Hi. We are UTA.
We thought it might be nice to slap a post right here that is specifically to discuss this episode 36. Then, we could do a stand-alone entry for each episode so a historical chit-chat could exist.
We'll post a link to this post here into the shownotes each time (if you like the idea) and we can carry on ideas and stuff.
So... check back here later and see if anyone does anything.
And... I'm totally using markdown here and this forum supports it, yay me, yay forum!

    • RE: New Audiocast Available Now!

@libremax hey! people are talking! nice. Thanks for that. I like to talk, talk talk...

We all have the same mic. It's a audio-technica ATR-2100.
then we all record to audacity
then we use Mumble to connect real-time.
then... poor Joe deals with the pain after. But.. your compliments keep him motivated!

good work on that painful editing, Jobot...

    • RE: Move from Github to Gitlab?

@neothethird I stand in agreement with this general position. Move, but do so in an orderly fashion. I agree with the others that MS cannot be trusted. The history is too dark to 'redeem' so we must, in order to stand for freedom, make immediate plans to start the move.

    • RE: UBPorts Phone for children (restricted use) and parents (as root) - [Parental Control]

This topic is of high interest to myself and others. Definitely join our parents group on Telegram (also Matrix).

Currently, we have "Simple Dash" (Brian Douglass) app running over top of regular Ubuntu Touch. This stops any action without parent's password. It works very well, but it does have a back door. You can go around via the settings in the top drawer.

This with Jade Diamond they can only go to a website you authorize. You can also blacklist a website you don't want them to go to.

We are also discussing how the router can work for protecting the whole home in general before the traffic even comes into the device.

Further, we have discussed the topic above of logging in. We believe once Unity8 is working (apparently soon) we will be able to set up 'admin accounts' over top of 'child accounts'.

There are also many business reasons to have these features. Employees should not do illegal or dumb things on company phones.

It would be most excellent to build a thriving team to focus on these solutions. Definitely our kids are getting messed up at young age and we have a very good solution here.

Hope these comments help and inspire....

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Audiocast (UTA) Episode 37 Discussion

      Great discussion here!

Wayne: "hi, Wayne, how are you doing?"
      Wayne; "Great thanks, and you?"
Wayne: Not bad, man. Not bad.
Wayne: "Cool....hmm... where is everyone else? Even Joe?"
Wayne: No idea. I think they don't like us. They think we suck.
      Wayne: Well... we do..
      Wayne: Right! That!

@doniks this seems really useful. are you part of the matrix bootcamp group? If not... probably you could be and should be since myself and a few others are trying to learn to become a developer there. I'm baby beginner but i'm trying with about 15 minutes a day. your list here could be really practical. I will post this to the group and see if it helps them. thanks for this practical one 🙂

    • RE: "5 minute" tasks

phenomenal. someone took action on the prompt! Thanks Alan . Now that we have an actual thread with some permanency I should expand my point that it doesn't have to be only 5 minutes every day, nor does it have to be 5 minute blocks. Yesterday, for example, I found myself spending 30 minutes testing an unreleased version of Fluffy Chat. Today might not have as much time. However, today I'm going to spend probably 30 minutes learning 1 or 2 more 'Python things'. I also am in the middle of learning Blender so that I can be more useful for future UBports video stuff. But even this is more than most people might be able to do.

You might have to save your 5 minutes from Monday to Friday and do 30 minutes together on saturday morning before the kids wake up. Then great! Do that and feel great about it.

Great work folks and be encouraged that even if you are not a developer (like I am not) that you can make a big difference. You can also PM me and I"ll try to help you find a spot. 🙂

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A | February 17, 2018

So, yeah. I got a question! I demand answers!

      Where is my stats.ubports.com site?

I've been clicking 'refresh' every hour for 3 weeks and all I get is area code 503. And my wrists are sore and my doctor told me I should stop clicking.

      What's up with that?

How's a man supposed to write fake news without bad data??

@PINE64 Hey sir. I understood above that it was some limitation in video out on hardware. My bad. IF it's just a software limitation than definitely Marius 'has it under control'. If he doesn't, we will gently speak to him har har

    • RE: Ring.cx and a client for UT

Here is my comment from the telegram group:

      [In reply to twinkybot]
has anyone tested ring lately with SIP? I tried it about 2 years ago and tried to make it work for business but I recall there were some SIP issues.... I really liked the general idea of it. Currently I'm using jitsi as software as well as jitsi meet for most stuff but it would be awesome to integrate something like this into the OS itself. I've been saying this for years with a few friends. In addition, having Retroshare built into Ubuntu would have been awesome... something like that. But at least something that has secure VOIP and SIP out of the box would be awesome and make perfect sense for a mobile OS....

      Continuation:

In summary, we really need SIP to work somehow, as well as a truly secure chat app. There are some debates about Telegram and security so if this is the case we need to at least make sure a truly secure option is available pretty much at the point of install, in my opinion. I believe that security should be built right into the default operation of the OS and anything less that optimum for security should alert you with scary notifications and make you CHOOSE to install it and make sure you understand it isn't optimum. We discussed this on the audiocast....

quick update to this thread (sept 2018). Linphone app is getting really, really good and is already working for SIP I've tested with my business SIP phone and it's now 'working' . There is a telegram group and also a kind of active community around this app if anyone is interested you can PM me or if @CiberSheep wants to open the group up in this thread he can....

    • RE: Call for ideas: Document scanner App

sweet. i'm on the forum again thanks to this...

      Ideas are as follows:

      Phase 1
keep it simple for phase 1 and have the following features:
      a) image to PDF export
      b) auto white balance/contrast (probably can get from GIMP code or something)
      c) auto crop if it's easy
      d) share to email/telegram/whatever

      Phase 2

      a) "Fake-a-Fax" feature (GIMP photocopy filter feature added)
      b) multi-page stitching (if it's easy of course put it into phase 1 since it's pretty important)
      c) some kind of integration with Nextcloud? I feel like some kind of NC doc integration would be cool. Like this: scan doc, click 'share', click 'Nextcloud' option, it moves document to NC server, it creates a private share link, it copies share link to clip board, user can then share the new scan with NC share link

Ok... i'm out of ideas! Hope this helps

    • RE: Convergence: The Hardware-Focused Discussion Thread

@dobey I want to argue with Dobey but I like what he's writing here. 🙂

Especially the part about software. I actually... never thought much about this because up until recently I didn't know anything about coding. Now that he mentions it how awesome would it be for a horrible programmer like me to sweat for 1 year on some simple app and then magically have it usable on every platform. That is, truly awesome. And the amount of dollars saved for a software company to be able to do that would be impossible to record. This is truly a significant consideration and definitely a worth cause with or without the hardware to consider.

Imagine even a 'tech support' environment where 99% of the learning was done and then you just have slight hardware related 'tweaks' to your base of understanding? This would be massive for any kind of IT support environment whether a third party company or an internal IT dept. Wow.

And then comes in snaps and flatpaks. Amazing. Deploy a flatpak/snap and have it roll out to phones, tablets too? Dang. Amazing.

So, I have to say 'thanks' to Mr. @dobey. This is huge eye opener thought for me and not sure how I didn't see this before ....

    • Convergence: The Hardware-Focused Discussion Thread

The purpose of this thread is to find a home for the exciting, but also very opinion-filled topic of convergence in context of 'hardware' and 'lifestyle'. It is filed under 'Unity 8' because without Unity 8, none of this is possible.

Is it better to have just one device?

What kind of hardware is best?

      Does the market want this?

What kind of creative set up environments can we dream up?

Oh, and we can share links and resources here as well.

      Let's get this going!
