Thanks for all the positive feedback πŸ™‚ we do realize that 3K isn't exactly a large production-run, but its a start, and its all we can muster before the year comes to an end (and CNY starts). They'll likely be bought up really quickly, and lets hope that by the right people: who wish to test, offer feedback to devs and to us, and have an understanding that software will still be beta-like.

          Hello @PINE64
Thank you again for your tremendous work done in collaboration with Ubports, for the clarity displayed in your speech and for keeping to the timetable as much as possible.
A little clarification is necessary for me to be sure: for the final product in March 2020 if this is known for sure now:
How many versions of Pinephones and which ones will be for sale?
          Thanks

@domubpkm Do you mean hardware versions/ variations or how many units will we produce?
I don't know if next year we'll release just the announced version 2GB RAM + 16GB eMMC, or if a special edition will be available at some point with 3GB RAM and more storage. This hasn't been decided yet.

As for how many units will be produced after CNY 2020, I cannot predict exact number, but the smallest the factory is willing to do is 10K from what I remember. Obviously that is just the very start. A conservative number for 2020 as is 40-50K, but given the amount of interest I expect there will be much more than that.

@PINE64 Thank you for that clarification. Yes, it was mainly to find out if there would be the special edition with 3GB RAM and more storage. And there would be at least one customer (me! ☺). As for the units that will be put on the market, the number is interesting.

@PINE64 I am starting to get nervous, with so many devices being online, if even half of them would only go for Ubuntu Touch, we need to ramp up our infrastructure for push notifications soon ^^

@Flohack - The following is just my guess: most users will end up using either UT or SailfishOS. At least initially. PMOS with Plasma mobile will also take a chunk out of this pie, but it won't be quite as large due to no app store and general complexity / lesser polish of Plasma mobile at this time.

Down the road I think that Replicant will have a big install base.

Most overlooked OS, in my view, is LuneOS, which is just great.

It's just an idea that came to me that, I guess, you have to think about: shouldn't you launch first, in some form (limited time with guarantee to get this product for example) a pre-order of the special edition so that you have a more accurate numerical basis?
(you don't have to answer me, I bring this idea that's all πŸ˜‰)

@domubpkm You're probably right. But experimenting with hardware when we're this short on time for production is a bad idea. This goes for the electronics and the chassis.

Electronics: what if the additional RAM module somehow doesn't play nice with existing software? (this has actually happened before on another device) What if it makes a difference in powerdraw or something similar? We have no time to properly test and troubleshoot etc.,

Chassis: we know how the black plastic cures in production. But say we would make it white or blue or whatever, there would be very little time to assess how a different plastic would cure or hold up. What if its too soft, or too brittle, or the color shows molding blemishes? ...

@PINE64 You are indeed right when i consider the data you provided me: my reasoning was based on the fact that a large part of the tests had already been done, whether at the hardware or software level, concerning a special 3 GB RAM edition.
I extrapolate but maybe later for this special edition?!

@domubpkm There will be multiple 'special' editions - for each partner project.

I'm sorry if I'm not understanding, but does "that will happen very late" mean that it will take a long time for Ubuntu Touch to be available (even as beta release) even after the PinePhone BraveHeart release? Even longer than the mass production release? Just curious if there are estimates...

                                            @orthocube,
Quick answer : the installer is a convenience for end users to facilitate flashing a device.

For "more advanced" users who wants to debug and help testing the method will be closer to development methods.
But in case of the PinePhone it will be quite easy first steps are the same as installing an OS for the raspberry pi ; flashing a SD card with dd command. Then I guess there will be something like a bootloader allowing to boot from the SD card or to flash the device using the image on SD card.
