Ubuntu Touch OTA-16 Is Here
-
Ubuntu Touch OTA-16 is here, supporting one new device, improving the built-in browser's Downloads experience, and overhauling the system to upgrade Qt to v5.12. The best parts of this release are the ones you don't notice. Coming to your Ubuntu Touch device over the next week.

Thanks for the huge work, @dobey and all ubports team!

Congratulations for a successful update on my Nexus 5. The Morph browser seems easier to access multiple tabs than before.
The only apps that did not work since the change were EbayUK (easily replaced by something similar,) Netspeed, translator-app, and OpenRadio. I assume that is to do with the removal of Oxide, whatever that is. None of the losses are essential to me so I am very happy. Well done.

The work of all the developers is admirable as usual ! Indeed, special mention for @dobey who did a monstrous job (surely some nice headaches !).
Small mistake : auto-brightness support is not fixed, at least on the Volla even if it should.
The REALLY main point to fix is the management of cellular data, APN on android 9 devices. This really can limits the use of these devices currently about calls, Internet and/or MMS not working.
But the adventure we have with UT, UBports is always exciting and rewarding.
Thanks again.

Thank you for the efforts. Hoping for the Pinephone to approach a similar usability. Good Job.

Eagerly awaiting the update on my vollaphone.

Hi everyone! A bit of a 'noob' question : if I'm on a 'dev' channel does this mean that all the features of OTA-16 were already installed on my device for quite a while? Or switching to 'stable' and installing it will indeed bring a lot of new stuff?
Thanks! -
Hi @pglushkov
You're right in DEV, you had the features of OTA16 for some time now.
The process is when a feature reaches DEV, it is integrated and so the biggest issues can be detected ahead.
When DEV reaches a certain level of stability and with all the evolutions required then it is merged to RC.There are more people on RC able to test and improve the overall quality.
At this point DEV is almost stuck except to fix major issues on RC.
When RC has been tested for a couple of week and no major bug remains the changes are merged to STABLE.And now, DEV will start to take new features and will progress towards OTA17.

@applee
thank you for the explanation! -
I have installed OTA-16 on my Nexus 5, and overall, it looks brilliant. Well done to everyone involved.
However, I have one problem. It might be coincidence, but since the installation, Dekko2 has become unstable. On opening, the Dekko2 logo appears, as expected, but then the screen goes blank and the app hangs. New incoming messages continue to be flagged by 'Notifications', but I can't actually open any of them. Any thoughts?

Hmm, this is odd, as the same behaviour happend when qt5.12 was first merged in the dev channel, but then an update to Dekko2 was release that fixed it. Maybe you are on an old version of Dekko2?
-
@povoq When I 'check for updates' nothing relating to Dekko2 is listed. I am fairly scrupulous at checking for, and adopting, all offered updates for installed apps.
-
@pglushkov There are more mechanisms on dev, yes, but is important to be aware that being on the dev channel may sometimes jeopardize (before it is detected and corrected) the stability of mechanisms implanted on the stable channel.
-
@the_cougar_kid Ok weird. It works for me on Nexus 5 OTA-16.
Maybe try to uninstall Dekko2 and install it again from the Openstore. Dekko2 has been updated for QT 5.12The only regression (issue) that has been identified and confirmed with OTA-16 is the document viewer that does not open office documents anymore (.odt, .docs, etc..).
When opening such a document, LibreOffice is loading 1 second and the app crashes: https://gitlab.com/ubports/apps/docviewer-app/-/issues/55.
However no problem to open PDF files.
It will I'm sure be fixed in future app update. For all other features, OTA-16 runs smooth and seems to be incredibly stable and reliable.
Thank you to UBports for the awesome job!!!

@stanwood Oops! I have always checked for updates via the Settings App. After your comments, I tried looking at installed apps via Software Centre, which listed 5 pending updates, including Dekko2. Having applied those updates, it is working fine again. Thanks for the important clue.
-
To whomever did solve the native camera app issues: THANKS A MILLION!!!
You have are my hero for your work in getting my 3T to be worthy of being called a daily driver now, I can't thank you enough for your time and effort.
-
The deafening sound my FP2 made when someone hang up on me is GONE ! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE !!! My ears are grateful to you guys for all eternity ! This is the best thing to come with this OTA so far for me ^^
-
Not much difference on Oneplus One... but that is because it was already quite good!
-
Sweet! Thank you, UT devs. Your work is greatly appreciated!

There's a translation regression with french layout in this last OTA, like with most OTA actually, but this time it's pretty much everywhere. There's hardly a fifth of overall OS being translated.
