@bq4.5 said in Push your vendor:

about spying lol, man your government, your provider, anything that is connected to the net is spied on some how or the other, so just spare me the gibberish spy song. Want to stay safe from spying, just avoid internet.

You are right. We live in a connected world. This is great and has a lot of opportunities but also threats. So unfortunately we have to get used to the fact that there is less native privacy from day to day BUT...
...it is also a question of the personal attitude. What I want to say is that on some point it has to start even if this start has not the immediate potential to safe the world.

So if now we have the opportunity to develop an alternative mobile OS we should be carefully aware about those general conditions.

At this point: A big THANK YOU to the UBports pioneers @mariogrip @NeoTheThird and Dalton Durst! (edited) And of course @Flohack...

Maybe the following is going too far for this discussion but anyway let me write this thought:
Out of a broader perspective I personally believe that privacy is one of the main preconditions for democratic and peaceful societies.
Only if we as citizens have the possibility to discuss controversial topics without fearing to be blamed by the officials and elites because of not stating the "universal trouth" with every sentence, we get better and beeter in understanding the complex world. This is due to someone who can identify and articulate the mistakes in our statements again without fearing to be blamed.
This personal understanding will than be the basis for our voting behaviour. So iteratively we - and so our systems - will get better and better.

Sounds great. But for me as a user seems too complicated.
Us this really solving all our Bluetooth problems? Maybe than this should be implemented in ota3?
But again. I am not at all a developer ...

    • RE: What is your main points for a perfect personal phone operative system?

I agree with all @mariogrip said exept convergence. Convergence for me would be nice but not essential reason why I support UBports and awaiting to switch to UT.
Priority wise I would put it in this order:
1a: Trust (no tracking and no personal information leackage without my consent)
1b: Core smartphone apps running fluently see this thread
2: Able to run some extra support-apps like Smarthome apps, carsharing apps (so at least st. like AnboxLight without sophisticated graphical performance would be very much appreciated)

    • RE: backup complete device

      Backup works great this way

      • shut down my FP2
      • restarted with volume up and power to recovery mode
      • connect my FP2 via USB to my ubuntu 16.04 laptop
      • open terminal on laptop
      • type adb devices in laptop terminal to check if device is available
      • cd in folder in laptop the backupt should land
      • type adb pull /data/system-data in laptop terminal
--- pull has started and lasts for feeled hours to get ready---
      • after finished type adb adb pull /data/user-data in laptop terminal
--- wait another hours to get that ready
      • backup completed 🙂

    • RE: Threema: secure messaging

I have used threema a long time ago but it is not open source so I convinced my family and some friends to switch to signal messenger. Unfortunately signal is not interested in working together with UBports so currently I ended up with telegram. But telegram also is not open source and encryption is weak. E.g no group encryption is available.
Now there is light at the horizon with matrix.org. a federated open source and end to end encryptable communication system. This is what I want and with uMatriks there is the first rudimentary app available.

So long story short: Threema is outdated, successor has been signal, but on the one hand they do not care about us and on the other hand there is a real leapfrogging with matrix.org. So I pledge for concentrating development, funding and support forces to make uMatriks a really useful app like riot.im.

In case of agreement and maybe anyway out of interest have a look at https://github.com/LarreaMikel/uMatriks

    • RE: Another funding page

I would encourage UBports also to be present on https://en.liberapay.com/. Looks like it is more open than patreon.

We should leave the patreon funding channel but for me e.g. it was not easy to fund on patreon with uMatrix script blocker active. I had to use a completely oopen browser for install my funding.

I think anyone who concerns about privacy would have the same issues so besides the fact of widening the community some of our natural, privacy concerning supporters only will have the ability to support if we open more secure channels.

    • RE: Gain more real users and user experience by supporting multi boot like EFIdroid with Android

That is right. I tried a little bit half a year ago.
For my fp2 no dual boot option is available, so I decided to have Ubuntu touch as my daily driver. Never really regret this decision since 7 month.

But anyway a dual boot option is highly appreciated IMO.

    • RE: Q&A 30 This Saturday 16/06/18 @ UTC 19:00

My understanding is, that the rc channel with 15.04 I am currently on with my FP2 in general is the pre OTA channel. And the OTA4 will be the first xenial release. So as on the rc 15.04 channel i will get the pre OTA4 (16.04) as rc23 without having to switch channels or do sth. else. Is that right?

    • Gain more real users and user experience by supporting multi boot like EFIdroid with Android

When I switched to ubuntu in 2007, multiboot with my windows encouraged me a lot. After some weeks merging to ubuntu was done. Since then ubuntu (starting with 07.04) it is my daily desktop OS.

Now I feel a similar situation and I think I am not the only one. For me personally it is currently very hard to use ubuntu as daily OS on my FP2 because this is my business phone and I am on the road regularly.
But I would like to run ubuntu as often as possible, so if e.g. EFIdroid would work as multiboot system, one could switch to ubuntu as often as possible and gaining day to day user experience.

There has already been some thoughts on that in the Fairphone community maybe we can follow up on this discussion here.

    • RE: Buy a smartphone with ubuntu

Try the FP2. AFAIK it is the best supported phone for UT for the time being. Only minor bugs like no LED and camera gets no access after coming back from background. But those bugs are already in work and will hopefully being fixed in the next update. https://github.com/ubports/ubports-touch/milestone/2?closed=1

      Success !
After backing up the data with the magic device tool, I switched channel by using the following command in the terminal on my ubuntu 16.04 desktop computer from the wiki:
      sudo ubuntu-device-flash --server=http://system-image.ubports.com touch --channel=15.04/rc
No data lost, everything is still there and active.
      Thanks @UniSuperBox et. al.

    • RE: What are must have apps? Things you can do

I do not understand your question right, but these are the most important things needing some development support imo even for 15.04:

      • Notifications for all services
      • Supporting uMatriks development so that it will be usefull like riot on Android
      • new web browser
      • support super groups in telegram app

    • RE: Daily usable ?

I use my fairphone 2 since 3 month as daily drive with UBports UT and I am very happy with it. Battery, connectivity and speed is comparable to android. Some minor bugs are already there like the led is not working and sometimes apps have no access to the sensors after coming from background.
The major core apps are available and even my smartwatch (pebble time round) is working.

So I could recommend UBports as daily driver.
