    • Comparison of all kind of Linux Mobile Systems

I am using now since 2015 ubuntu touch as my only mobile system. I bought at that time this wonderful BQ E5 (which is now broken ;/). Today I use a N5 which runs brilliant with ut.

I have started to have a look at other linux mobile systems. These experiences I would like to share here. I am sure that such a view to the others can improve ut (and the others too) a lot.

The following systems I have already tried:

      1. Plasma Mobile on a Nexus 5+: https://www.plasma-mobile.org/

      2. Nemo Mobile on a Nexus 5+: https://wiki.merproject.org/wiki/Nemo

      3. SailfishOS on a Sony XA2: https://sailfishos.org/

      4. Eelo on a Nexus 5+: https://e.foundation

    • Nexus 5 -> battery selection

I still have the dream that my Nexus 5 phones will nearly have the same battery capacity than the old BQ E5. On the market are 3 different batteries for the N5 available:

      • original LG BL-T9, 2300mAh
      • GLK-Technologies, 2450mAh
      • Polarcell, 2450mAh

Normally I thought the Powercell should be the best one. But now I found also an accu from Extremecells:

      https://www.ebay.de/itm/Extremecells-Akku-für-LG-Google-Nexus-5-D821-D820-BL-T9-Accu-Batterie-Battery/252400969378

An accu comparison for Samsung phones found out that Extremecells had the highest capacity:

      https://www.akkucheck24.de/smartphone-akku-test-drittanbieter-vs-original/

      Has somebody experiences whith them?

    • Using ut-phones as a media station - offering a specific media-image of UT !?

I use my old BQ E5 as a music station. I bought some years ago a pure bluethooth speaker (https://www.teufelaudio.com/uk/bluetooth.html) and the ut-BQ is just laying on the living room table and can be connected with it and plays music files, radio stations, can be used as a KODI remote control or anything else.

I deinstalled all ut apps without media functionalities and just have pure music apps installed - and nothing else.

Why I write this? It's just an idea to offer a specific UT which can be downloaded and installed on old phones to be used as such a music phone (like e.g. sparky is offering a specific multimedia debian: https://sparkylinux.org/download/rolling/)

And I like that much more than having a lot of electronic equipment in the living area. Old phones (also with errors) can be bought cheap and also old bluetooth speakers are having less electronical components and so a lower ecological footstep.

PureOS can only be tested on a PC or you have to order future Librem 5. I haven't found a development for another phone which can be tested?!

LuneOS with a version from the end of last year can be tested on a Nexus 4+5: http://build.webos-ports.org/releases/doppio/images/

I will also try it 😉

    • RE: RSS Reader

I have installed your RSS Reader Scope and I really love that function and it is one of the most used on my phone.

I was wondering why scopes are still useable in 16.04. Now I read here that rest-scope-functionalities will be deleted with coming OTA 8: (see chapter What's Next?) https://ubports.com/pt_PT/blog/ubports-blog-1/post/ubuntu-touch-ota-7-release-192

Probably your RSS Reader Scope will than not be useable anymore?! If so - could you develop an app out of it?

@guru I think ALL people here who are using & developing UT are doing it more or less similar to that what you write. But I am afraid there are not a lot groups like us who are aware of what that really means.

As I come out of the climate movement (energy - not IT) - and UT is from my perspective a part of it - I know very well and since a long time what problems results when companies have the possibility of influencing masses of people. And this effects not only wired right orientated ones!

If I think about how masses of people could be teached which plattforms they should use to avoid all these negative developements - so this initiative above is one of the best things I ever read.

    • RE: OTA-6 Call for Testing

Sometimes my BQ E5 crashs and returns to the "Ubuntu Touch" loading screen. This never happened until now on the Nexus 5. And it seems it happens less often with OTA-6. But at least 2 times until now.

If my BQ E5 crashes because running out of memory isn't there a way to write data on the phone? You probably already tried....

I now turned back to my BQ E5 as daily used phone - because the energy management of this phone is now really phenomenal !! (I always have enough power for more than 1 day). This makes it more handy than the Nexus 5. ;/

    • RE: Comparison of all kind of Linux Mobile Systems

While SailfishOS from Jolla costs 29 € (lifetime costs) and the GUI is not open source (but the rest is), all other system are free off costs for end users.

Eelo based on LineageOS - is running fine - but because of the android basis it is not really the focus of my research.

The actual Plasma Mobile version was not really able to do fundamental functions - so I decided to come back to that OS when a next bigger version is published.

Actually I am trying the new 3.0.3.9 version of SailfishOS. Which is really looking great on the first view, offers masses of Sailfish-apps and runs in a very good looking way.

Now https://uappexplorer.com/apps is up again !

If I look for apps on Openstore on the phone, I do NOT find exactly the same apps as if I look on https://open-store.io/. E.g. the tinder app (which is e.g. NOT working on Sailfish) I always downloaded here uappexplorer.com and I can find it here open-store.io but NOT directly on the phone Openstore.

      @trainailleur

I have installed nemo mobile on the Nexus 5+. And its running perfect. I haven't found problems (as a normal user). But it is nothing else than an old SailfishOS-version on basis of more open source components. So I cannot see more differents.

The newest version of SailfishOS is actually running e.g. on a Sony XA2 - for a Nexus 5+ it is not developed. And the XA2 is until now not part of nemo mobile.

    • RE: Observations on battery life - please share your experiences

Since I installed the actual Release-channel-update the battery management of the Nexus 5 improved a lot. The time where I do not have to charge the phone at least doubled - or even more.

This morning I had a bigger loss - maybe the problem is not totally solved - but now it is really better than good!

    • RE: Comparison of all kind of Linux Mobile Systems

      @makeixo

My first days now with the newest version of SailfishOS on the Sony XA2 are really impressive! In several stores with different quality levels there are masses of apps; the integration of android works really great, so even the android store is available and fast! (even if I not urgently need it). The system looks great and innovative, everything works also on a second view. So Jolla really does a very good job! Its the most developed system - besides the big two - as I see the things.

      But:

With no other OS I had so many problems with the installation. Without Windows it was not possible - and an USB problem made it neccessary to use also a second PC. One phone got bricked because Sailfish is (until now) not installable on devices flashed with Android 9. Jolla stopped carrying out the system for a while and tries to find with Sony a way to reanimate such phones.

If I compare the funcionality of the browser and other standard applications like navigation, mailing, messengers or just weather information, I miss a bit the pure functionality of ubuntu touch. And especially the way to switch from one app to another, the solution on ut is for me much more handy. And at the end I would prefer some selected apps instead of masses.

By the way: On Sailfish there is an app called 'Crest'. Here you can see how many processes are actually running on the phone. Compare if the android support is On and Off. You see maybe 2 processes if its Off. You see more than 20 processes if its On - even if you haven't opened any app ever in your live. Normally the android support automatically starts and can be started only through apps, if you have stopped it.

    • RE: Comparison of all kind of Linux Mobile Systems

We could now have a long discussions if the future of an OS is an identical system which runs on all kinds of devices, which it is not from my point of view - but thats not the reason for this topic. I wanted to point out advantages and disadvantages or problems (like this one with android 9, which could in the future also be one for ut) of that what the market is offering.

But why ut is less mobile-centric? I don't find a lot about the core of Sailfish. Its based on Mer -> MeeGo -> Moblin, its middleware and should easily be adaptable to all kinds of devices: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MeeGo

    • RE: Comparison of all kind of Linux Mobile Systems

I just got a document from Jolla regarding the problem with Android 9 and Sailfish OS installations. Interesting for me was that there seems NOT to be any way to install their system in the today status on Android 9 phones - so Jolla developed a way to degrade Android 9 phones to Android 8 - and than install SFOS.

So probably this idea could be regarded for other systems to!??
