Very excited about this - fingers crossed chat applications with push notifications will at some point be supported, though I see how that might be challenging. Great initiative in either case.

And shout out to the anonymous donor who gave 2 500 euros earlier today. 💸

    • RE: Most wanted features for Morph?

For me, some appreciated features would be:

      • option to move adress bar to the bottom of the screen
      • quick toggle (in burger menu) for desktop mode for one tab only
      • option to swipe address bar to change tab left or right

In other words I'm really quite happy already, more than anything just keep up the great work!

Edit: Another thing I realized I miss is a forced dark mode - basically a way to force white text on black background for all web sites. Opera for Android has it and I loved it. Not exactly top priority stuff though.

    • RE: UBports Website rebuilding

If I were to summarize the general statement in three tabloid keywords, I would probably go for:

      Transparent
Developed as an open source project, Ubuntu Touch contains no hidden nuts and bolts. Your usage data is kept exactly where you want it: on your device, and nowhere else.
      Community-driven
Rather than being developed by one of the richest companies in the world, Ubuntu touch is fully developed by the community of users. As a consequence the system is developed with the sole purpose of giving the best and most secure user experience possible, while mainstream systems balance these concern against profit.
      Built to last
Rather than being developed individually for each device, Ubuntu Touch runs the exact same operative system on all phones. This means that your phone will continue to receive software updates for years after traditional vendors would drop support.

    • RE: Improve system settings disk usage analyzer

Just a quick comment on the problem of short bars on relative graphs: Is this really a problem? When opening this setting I guess most users are interested in what is taking up space on their system, and the very short relative graphs is a great indication that "it's not this".

At least for me, that's much more valuable than the technical details about each app. And the graphs are a great way of making it clear, while the difference between 100 mb and 100 kb when written out is hard to grasp for most (non-tech) people. 🙂

The number of trolls in the Linux community is really incredibly frustrating. For coming across as tremendous nerds it's amazing that these people don't seem to realize that open source comes with the freedom of a) forking, b) contributing, or c) keeping your mouth shut and use something else if you're not happy.

It's the curse of internet comment sections in general: people with something valuable to add are generally less interested in spending a large portion of their lives posting on message boards. So always nice when people make sure to voice the non-toxic opinion of the silent majority! 🙂

    • RE: [REQUEST] OpenStreetMap edit tool

While not as powerful as the web interface, I have used android apps in the past, and I think it's useful. They tend to be less powerful than the website, but it's nice to be able to contribute when I'm out and about, for example if I'm waiting to meet someone in a restaurant that is not listed.

That being said, developing such an app for Ubuntu Touch might be harder work than what it is worth at the moment - it would have to be used a lot before it's more efficient than just contributing to OSM directly. 😛

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 77 Saturday 6th Of June At 19:00 UTC

Two questions regarding the current plans for apps across different mobile distros. They might be stupid or previously answered, but I did not have much luck with the search function. I'm not particularly concerned with the state of affairs at the moment, this is more about where the development is headed over the next months and years.

      1. As far as I understand, Plasma Mobile and Ubuntu Touch are making some efforts to make the same Qt apps run effortlessly on both platforms. Is it likely that the same app store (OpenStore, I assume) would be a default feature on both platforms?
      2. The Gnome world seems to have a completely different take on the issue, with GTK4 apps developed with an adaptable interface using libhandy being seen as the way of the future. Will software developed in this manner (like future releases of Geary or Gnome Maps) be easily available on UT, possibly even in the OpenStore? And should it be expected to run about as well on Ubuntu Touch as, say, PostmarketOS?

Guess I'm just worried about fragmentation. 🙂

The difference between constructive feedback/opinion sharing and criticism is lost in translation all the time when stuff is written. Maybe even more in open source forums than anywhere else. No need to derail the conversation, if one adds a thin layer of good faith there's not much a disagreement here at all. 🙂

As for the boot logo, if I create an image in the correct resolution and follows the Nexus 5 steps, would it be likeky to work on my Nexus 6p? And if it didn't, would I be likely to break anything?

      3. People point out that the problematic statement is still problematic, reflecting badly on the free software movement should Stallman keep his spot at the board

    • RE: UT and maps program/GPS in the USA.

@trainailleur I wouldn't be worried about a decreased incentive to use OSM in the rest of the world. At least in Europe Google Maps had great coverage before the smartphone GPS revolution: As far as I know it was never developed here primarily because Google maps coverage was lacking. There might, however, be some work done by GPS providers I am unaware of.

It's all about the limitations to use of Google Maps, and as OSM has gotten better it has also gotten more widely adapted. It does maybe suffer a bit from this as well: as it has not traditionally been an alternative to Google Maps, it is sometimes better at mapping trees than bars and restaurants. Thankfully they have made it easy for even the most technically incompetent users to contribute this information, so I see a bright future for it. 🙂

    • RE: UBports Website rebuilding

@CiberSheep I would guess all of these things - with the possible exception of the "balls and gradients" - are mostly due to this being a relatively quick mock-up. The final page probably shouldn't describe Ubuntu Touch as a "A Powerfual alternative" either! 😉

I think the way of thinking about Ubuntu Touch as a brand rather than a project makes all the sense in the world for the front page, at least if the goal is to convert people into using it. But "busy" elements should maybe try to mirror elements of the operative system itself, for example by dynamic animations illustrating the swiping gestures? It'd say animations are great as long as they direct (positive) attention towards elements of the OS itself rather than away from it.

Also, I'm not generally a software mascot kind of guy, but that 3D render looks great.

    • Toggle keyboard autocorrect

      Hi!

I'm having a minor but frustrating problem with the keyboard. Autocorrect seems to be enabled or disabled at seemingly random times: For example, it is disabled while writing this post (text fields in morph browser), but in many apps it is enabled while entering information like passwords or user names. It seems to always be enabled in Libertine.

In consequence, I lack the functionality when I want it, and I need to disable it in order to use some apps at all.

Is it possible to quickly toggle autocorrect on and off from the keyboard somehow, so that I can use if whenever I want to and not when the system decides I should? If not, consider this a feature request. 🙂

Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find anything searching. I'm on the developer channel on a Nexus 6p.

    • RE: Why no global BACK button/swipe motion?

While I understand that this would be app-specific, I would just like to throw one idea out there.

It would be great if a swipe gesture that started at the bottom of the screen and exited anywhere on the left side would work as a "back" gesture at least in default apps. I have no idea how hard it would be to implement, but it would be a welcome alternative to the sometimes hard to reach button positioned at the top left of the screen. 🙂

If this is easy (or made easy) to implement I imagine it could catch on in apps that depend on the back button, especially Morph browser and web apps!

    • RE: UBports Website rebuilding

@Kaizen I am unfortunately yet to get my hands on an ubuntu touch device - I'm currently writing only as a disgruntled Android user. So I think maybe somebody else will be better fit to write a value proposition. I think it makes sense to keep convergence as a clear part of this if possible while remaining honest, as it seems to have been the main selling point of Canonical.

If/when we reach a point where the major communication platforms are supported and working well (good web apps, Whatsapp in anbox) I think this should also be addressed, as it is a central concern. I don't know exactly how apps are contained in UBports vs Android, not sure if a security message could be included in this section ("Every app you need - contained" or something).

I guess another selling point is that it is "welcoming, yet powerful" or something like that: highlighting that it is perfectly suited for normal users with their normal needs, while also offering the power of Linux to advanced users. But again, I don't think I'm the right person to be writing this.

      Some thoughts on phrasing:

      • For the main headline, I would shift focus away from "our" dreams and towards the system. "A better alternative for your smartphone or tablet. Made by users, for users"? Not sure, ideally it should be able to communicate clearly what UBports is even to somebody who has no idea what an operative system is.
      • "OS" needs to be spelled out, and lowercase characters after comma.
      • Maybe "Your data are kept exactly where you want it: on your device, and nowhere else unless you explicitly ask for it"?
      • Where I wrote mainstream systems, maybe "traditional systems" is a better choice of words.

Quick thoughts on the OS page:

      • Not sure if "preferred by developers" is the best sales pitch for a headline - normal users will think you have to be able to read binary to use it. This is where I would rather have the "welcoming, yet powerful" pitch, and mention the linux terminal as an example of why power users prefer it.
      • Ever changing welcome screen sounds confusing. "Welcome screen that tells you everything you need to know at a glance"?
      • The "every app you need" section shouldn't be separated from the OpenStore part
      • Big brother has too negative connotations - I would keep the security focus purely positive, only implying the failures of other systems. But maybe I'm too pragmatic.

    • RE: Morph browser navigation

Swiping from the bottom of your screen should open a list of tabs. A quick swipe will open the previously used tab, a longer one will show you an overview of all open tabs.

The back button should work as in any other browser. If it's grayed out, maybe you opened the current page in a new tab or in a new window?

Ubuntu Touch is like a desktop OS in the sense that you can have multiple windows of the browser running at the same time, each with their separate tabs open.

Swiping up to show the list of tabs will only work when the keyboard is not open. 🙂

    • RE: UBports Website rebuilding

Loving this. Linking to the installer on the same page as the device information makes a lot of sense to me.

In the header bar, I would write out "OS". More advanced users might be confused if it refers to operating system or open source, less advanced users probably don't get anything from "OS" alone.

Furthermore, I would add "About us" prominently in the header. About the community in the footer is good for those who understand FOSS. For those who don't, a natural question to ask is "why should I trust these people". I always check the "about us" page first when I'm not sure what I'm looking at. The current UBports Foundation page is maybe a bit technical, but it's a good starting point I think.

Some more thoughts, as always just suggestions and ideas:

      • "Open Source, Free to use Operation System" would be better as "Free and open source operating system", but the fact that it an operating system is already mentioned. "Free, innovative and community driven"? Too many adjectives?
      • Supported devices (I think this presentation is neat - would be upset if they didn't peek up a little bit on mouse over, which is a good thing. Implies I instinctively want to interact with the design)
      • I generally think uppercase for every word in headlines is a bit noisy, and should only be used in the main headline. But as long as it's made consistent I guess it's alright
      • The graphic over development is neat, with the boxes pointing to the latest OTA. Would be even neater if month and year was added to each OTA box, or just year if month is unknown for the next release. Often when looking at open source projects one wants to know if they are actively being developed, which this would answer neatly.
      • I still have no idea what OTA actually stands for, which is a bit weird - especially maybe when it shows up in the headline of the demonstration page.
      • On the ports page - maybe add a drop down menu for manufacturer, a search box, or something else? Would expect to see it above the list of phones, but you're the master mind. The font for the content here also seems a bit too tiny compared to the sidebar, but I guess it's work in progress.
      • Under the contributes on the ports page: maybe add a funding link? Kind of like the one found in the OpenStore. If people make one available, of course. Thinking "Donate" next to "Gitlink" and "Blog".
      • "check repo instead" should link to more information somewhere (documentation?), but I guess that's work in progress.
      • We need adjectives for "design" and "interface". "Ground breaking design", as it's breaking new ground away from old alternatives and towards convergence? "Intuitive interface", as one generally wants the interface to be intuitive?
      • Everything you need is just a swipe away. With a new way of thinking about mobile interfaces, Ubuntu Touch gives you easy access to powerful features without ever getting in your way.
Stand out in the crowd with a new and cutting edge system on your smartphone - or disappear in the crowd with a trustworthy system that truly respects your privacy.
        • this takes some edge from the next point, but I feel like it might be slightly too edgy already
      • Enter the OpenStore
        >> explore the store
With hundreds of apps already available in categories such as communication, music, navigation, administration and games, Ubuntu Touch is ready to meet a wide variety of needs.
Developed by a freedom-loving community, most apps in the OpenStore are funded by voluntary donations rather than pay walls or ads.

@Keneda Not directly related, but AppLee had a point about things getting lost in translation - the English language is a bit of a mine field for politeness, especially maybe when coming from French. Anglophones tend to be less direct about things, and while your comments seem fine if I translate them to French, they do come across as a bit aggressive in English.

As a non-native speaker myself, I have just kind of accepted that I need to try my best to be overly polite and indirect whenever communicating in English. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's generally worth it. 🙂

@dobey said in How to extend the system UI and UX?:

@marc_aurel said in How to extend the system UI and UX?:

Another approach is to use a finger print sensor.

No, this would not be acceptable, as that is not what people use biometric interfaces for. Also, not all devices have fingerprint sensors.

While I agree this needs to be optional, I do not at all get your point of it "not being acceptable". If I had this option I would absolutely take use it.

The sensor would only serve as a button, not read your fingerprint. One could use any finger to launch it. It's not about using your fingerprint to launch a service, it's about utilizing this button that is just hanging around at the back of phones doing nothing most of the time.

Furthermore, this is not unprecedented. In Android, there is an option to swipe the fingerprint sensor to pull down the notifications bar. It works like a charm except that it's absolutely worthless.

As for the fact that not every device has it: Hardware buttons could also be an option where available, and I would personally want the super key to open this functionality when a keyboard is connected. However, I fundamentally disagree that functionality should not be developed unless it would work on every piece of hardware out there. Following this logic development of convergence should never have taken place. Furthermore, this would not be a default feature in any case. Only having it available to install for users with compatible devices seems... normal.

If I missed your point on why it's unacceptable, please elaborate.
