    • RE: Samsung A04s

@alita One option might be Lineage OS, another is /e/OS. /e/OS supports some Samsung phones, but this one doesn't seem to be on the list yet: https://doc.e.foundation/devices

Both are Android based; Lineage is independent from Google, while /e/OS is actively anti Google (it uses Mozilla location services, feeds Google false information if you choose to set up your phone with a Google account, etc). I use the latter as my daily driver, and while Ubuntu Touch is more exciting, these are great alternatives for getting the convenience of Android without the surveillance of Google. 🙂

    • RE: Swype keyboard for UT?

Here's an old thread about this:
      https://forums.ubports.com/topic/3844/swipe-style-keyboard/19

It seems some relevant technology might have been developed for SailfishOS, but nothing became of that discussion.

I remember seeing someone demonstrating a swype keyboard for Phosh at one point, but I cannot find it anywhere.

Very excited about this - fingers crossed chat applications with push notifications will at some point be supported, though I see how that might be challenging. Great initiative in either case.

And shout out to the anonymous donor who gave 2 500 euros earlier today. 💸

      @c0n57an71n
Simplified, in case you're out of the loop:

      1. Stallman makes problematic statement, resigns from board of the Free Software Foundation
      2. 18 months later Stallman and/or the Foundation has a change of mind, Stallman re-joins the board
      3. People point out that the problematic statement is still problematic, reflecting badly on the free software movement should Stallman keep his spot at the board
      4. Stallman joins Dr Seuss and Mr. Potato Head in the strange wave of post-45 cancel culture outrage

What a time to be alive.

    • RE: Passion play

The number of trolls in the Linux community is really incredibly frustrating. For coming across as tremendous nerds it's amazing that these people don't seem to realize that open source comes with the freedom of a) forking, b) contributing, or c) keeping your mouth shut and use something else if you're not happy.

It's the curse of internet comment sections in general: people with something valuable to add are generally less interested in spending a large portion of their lives posting on message boards. So always nice when people make sure to voice the non-toxic opinion of the silent majority! 🙂

    • RE: Facebook messenger on Ubports ?

Messenger in Sailbook/the mobile web page stopped working completely for me recently. Just not available anywhere.

The only solution I've found is to use Pesbook, set it to zoom out a little, use the desktop interface, and open messenger from the menu.

It's not smooth and I've had some keyboard issues. Notifications are of course out of the question. But I can talk to people, so I guess that's something...

    • RE: Does this phone reliably support SMS and voice calling?

Additionally, while I also like the port for the Nexus 6P, it was released in 2015 and is therefore more than five years old. I also can't speak for the reliability of SMS and phone calls as it's not my daily driver.

If you want a new device the Volla phone ($450) might be worth looking into?

@flohack It's quick to reconnect even after reboots now, while earlier I could never make it work at all. So there is truly something that has snapped into place the device.

Not much help for those experiencing problems though - sorry I don't have anything more valuable to add based on my experience!

    • RE: GPS not working

Mine didn't use to work, but now it's pretty reliable. I once made it connect this summer, no luck since before last week. I changed the battery and kept the GPS open for a while, and suddenly it's working.

Did it learn where to look after randomly finding a signal twice? Did I accidentaly push the antenna back into place when changing the battery somehow? Was there a change on the devel channel that made the difference?

I don't know, but it didn't work at all, and now it does.

    • RE: How safe is UT from trackers?

@ubuntutouchfan I think the best option to avoid 'www trackers' on smartphones at the moment is FireFox for mobile, which offers a lot of security settings and of course is fully open source. So while Ubuntu Touch/Morph browser is by no means bad, Android or iOS with FireFox might have a slight edge still.

I should mention I know nothing about more advanced security measures - you could probably just use Tor and sleep easily.

    • RE: Nexus 6P Ubuntu Touch WIFI and GPS issue

@lakotaubp I'm also having problems with the GPS - most of the time its not working, with the same behaviour you're describing. However, I didn't use the phone much with Android, so it could be a hardware issue.

Seems strange though, since it works sometimes. Right now it managed to connect for the second time in history. When it connects its indoors in the same location as where it usually fails, and the reception/preciseness is great. It usually won't connect even outdoors.

Edit: I probably have the exact same issue as described here:
      https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5399/gps-not-working/11
Just didn't browse enough before sharing. 🙂

    • RE: Recharge points for electric cars

@ricardo65 Not sure if it's what you had in mind, but this functionality already exists in Pure Maps:

      1. Install & open Pure Maps
      2. Settings -> Places nearby
      3. Chose radius and select 'EV Charging Station' as type
      4. Search using the button in the top right corner
      5. Press the button that appears in the top right corner of the results page to see the results marked on the map.

      Hope thats helpful!

    • RE: Welcome to the UBports community! Introduce yourself here!

      @LDovic Welcome!

I think one good entryway to developing is via the core apps - as the most experienced UBports developers tend to be busy working on the OS itself, there's not enough people working on the core apps. Should be possible to make a pretty big impact regardless of experience level, and it's probably a good introduction as well. 🙂

      In case you're interested, they're found on gitlab.com/ubports/apps. 🙂

    • RE: Improve system settings disk usage analyzer

Just a quick comment on the problem of short bars on relative graphs: Is this really a problem? When opening this setting I guess most users are interested in what is taking up space on their system, and the very short relative graphs is a great indication that "it's not this".

At least for me, that's much more valuable than the technical details about each app. And the graphs are a great way of making it clear, while the difference between 100 mb and 100 kb when written out is hard to grasp for most (non-tech) people. 🙂

    • RE: Call for testing: Google/Huawei Nexus 6P (angler) owners

@Count042 Guess I'll be buying a battery. Is it possible that a hair dryer will do the job if I don't fancy getting a heat gun?

Regarding point 3, it's discussed here:
      https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5047/can-ota-15-be-the-final-release-including-oxide
It'll probably not be fixed, as they're built in a framework that is no longer supported.

For point 4: I experienced weird issues with the first container I made, even though it looked normal enough. Made a new one, and it worked fine. Could be worth giving it another try.

I've also struggled with the brightness - I used to love how dark the screen could get on Android.

That's all that could fit on one screen, and I still haven't figured out how to open the menu that allows me to mark/copy text in the terminal app, so it's a bit of a struggle. Will trade more logs in exchange for tips on using the terminal! 😉

    • RE: Most wanted features for Morph?

For me, some appreciated features would be:

      • option to move adress bar to the bottom of the screen
      • quick toggle (in burger menu) for desktop mode for one tab only
      • option to swipe address bar to change tab left or right

In other words I'm really quite happy already, more than anything just keep up the great work!

Edit: Another thing I realized I miss is a forced dark mode - basically a way to force white text on black background for all web sites. Opera for Android has it and I loved it. Not exactly top priority stuff though.
