    • RE: While VoLTE is a worry, video calling working is actually a BIG DEAL

@totalrando Google Voice works on my P2XL.

We are working on a sip solution to stand in for VoLTE. We've had some good progress this week.

    • RE: USA carrier

Verizon VoLTE will work (ONLY) with the Pinephone/pro

For everything else, as others have said, until VoLTE gets worked out T-mobile and associated MVNOs are best. I've used Mint, Red Pocket, US Mobile. All worked fine.

      For Nexus 5 PolarCell.

I've put a lot of work into it, and other than doing the Nexus 5X battery mod, no battery works better.

    • RE: Cricket Wireless

@raydantheman Cricket, as it's parent AT&T, is pushing their whitelist of devices they will allow on their network. OnePlus 6(T) and Oneplus 7(T) are both capable of using the 4G VoLTE network post 3G shutdown this coming January.

So, your answer is to use a device agnostic MVNO such as Red Pocket, US Mobile, Straight Talk, H2O, etc. In the event that UT VoLTE functionality does not get worked out by that date, you have two options:

      • Use a regional carrier. They mostly are not upgrading to VoLTE only.

      • Voip/SIP. By using a voip provider, any device capable of 4G Data can continue to make phone calls despite the lack of VoLTE capability. You just need to be able to access the LTE data network.

    • RE: Nexus 5 vs Nexus 5x

@jjconstr The Nexus 5 is a great phone, soon to be better with a halium upgrade. The main complaint about it is finding a good replacement battery. I've tried a couple and found the best battery is from a German company - PolarCell Battery for LG Google Nexus 5 D821 D820 BL-T9 EAC62078701 2450mAh. It is available on eBay if you are not in the EU.

It's a good quality after market - which means new, not old stock sitting on a shelf for half a decade, nor is it a cheap knock off rebranded. I've had it for a year now and still holds a full charge just like it used to when I bought the phone from Google.

You need the MSMdownload Tool from xda-developers forum. It will unbrick your device.

It's a windows only tool. In the forums here, there is a linux equivalent. Search op6 sub-category

Apparently there is a group already working on a solution to access the camera from the android HAL and present it to Linux:

"provides a set of interfaces to libcamera for existing applications; they will include a V4L compatibility layer, an Android HAL interface, and a GStreamer interface. The intent is to make libcamera suitable for all Linux-based devices." https://lwn.net/Articles/794555/

@carrabelloy Msmdownload tool from the XDA-developers forum. If you have the T-mobile version, be sure to use the one created especially for it. Remember to flash OOS9 for UT.

    • RE: As simple as possible

@Keneda Just giving options. He wants no maps, no camera, etc. Some of UTs phone ports do not have working camera, but most do. Pinephone and Librem, as you know, have physical switches to disable camera, etc. He could just physically remove the camera from any phone as well, although that might have unintended effects depending on how it's wired.

    • RE: Phone Not Pulling Carrier Info From SIM Card

@dingdangdoong UT does not yet have VoLTE enabled to make calls on Verizon. You will need to use an AT&T or T-mobile network until that is fixed. It is a work in progress, not yet known when that will happen.

    • RE: Pixel 3a XL experience

@joe XDA-developers forum is the best place to see which of the Verizon models can be unlocked. There are active exploits for a few models (pixel 2), but it's hit or miss at best and better to just keep returning until you get an unlockable model.
