    • RE: How to export UT contacts from contacts.db without a working phone?

Ok, it was much easier than I believed. I just had to

      • query the contacts.db (I used DB Browser for SQLite) as select vcard from folder_id;.
      • select all results, copy and paste them into a text file and save this file as contacts.vcf.
      • open this file in Android, confirming that contacts need to be imported.

    • How to export UT contacts from contacts.db without a working phone?

Alas, my Nexus 5 didn't get to celebrate it's symbolic 10 year anniversary, I can't get it to boot any longer.

While waiting for a new UT device I have to 'go Lineage' for a moment. And I was hoping to find a way to import, directly or indirectly, the -salvaged just in time- contacts.db file into Android.

Any ideas? Can for instance syncevolution be run outside of UT?

    • How to avoid the URL key containing keyboard layouts?

When typing inside the address bar of morph-browser an URL key is added to the keyboard layout.

My fingers don't like the shrunken space bar, and my mind isn't always immediately aware of the sudden layout switches.

One solution would be an upstream change at maliit/keyboard. But the corresponding Github ticket has so far not generated a lot of enthusiasm.

So, I'm looking for a workaround. I already tried temporarily mounting root as rw, and then soft linking the non-standard layouts (Keyboard_en_email.qml, Keyboard_en_url, Keyboard_en_url_search.qml) to the standard one (Keyboard_en.qml) inside the /usr/share/maliit/plugins/com/ubuntu/lib/<lang>/ folders. But this didn't help.

      Any other advice?

@davenothere According to this link, you should still be fine data-wise even if 3G bands will be phased out: https://www.frequencycheck.com/carrier-compatibility/zLtEl/google-nexus-5-lg-d820/cricket-wireless-united-states

Mir, Wayland, Lomiri, HAL, Halium HAL, HIDL, libhybris, nuntium... it might be just me, but -and despite your laudable and countless efforts to explain them- my head still spins every time these terms come up. Are there by any chance already architecture diagrams available that explain these components/libraries/frameworks and there interaction? If not, you might consider creating them. Not only to quench the thirst of curious laymen like me, but also to lower the entry threshold for new developers.

    • RE: OTA-16 Call for Testing

I went through the remaining QA flagged topics (~ https://github.com/orgs/ubports/projects/25), or at least those my knowledge and device allowed me to test, and added my findings for RC 2021-W10 and Nexus 5 in the according Github threads. All seems more or less fine.

Some oddities I encountered turned out to be present already in OTA-15 (System Settings freeze when resetting Launcher, Morph pop-up dialogs out of screen) and some I could not reproduce so far (my home Wifi network temporarily not showing up in, and the Telephone app freezing once at call hang-up).

I would like to share these 3 things though:

      • after upgrading from OTA-15 to 2021-W10, my GhostCloud app somehow lost my NextCloud account details (~ "No account available yet. Please add an account to continue.). Indeed, strangely my NextCloud account wasn't in my System accounts (could it be it wasn't there before?). Adding it did not change the GhostCloud message however. And, even more strangely, when moving back to OTA-15 my GhostCloud app disappeared from the Launcher, and I can't even find it again in OpenStore... I must be missing something (sleep?)...

      • When connecting my phone to an external monitor through Slimport, and then disconnecting, the indicator menu icons got stretched out (and only restarting could change this). This doesn't happen on OTA-15.

      • Switching back to the stable channel and pausing the Ubuntu Touch v13 download, I afterwards didn't manage to continue the download (pause button was greyed out and update was shown as "0 bytes of 452.0 MB"). To continue the download, deleting cache+config+data of System Settings app was needed (in UT Tweak Tool). This doesn't happen when I pause the RC 2021-W10 from within OTA-15.

    • RE: Nexus 5 battery case: advice?

@cliffcoggin Sure. In the past I had already at one point replaced the battery with a new one, without notable difference in battery life. But, maybe back then a software issue was at fault, whereas now it is indeed the battery itself. So, I might indeed try out the other spare batteries I have.

    • RE: Nexus 5 battery case: advice?

@flohack Thanks! That's great news. Judging from Github commit timestamps, and apart from your latest setting modification related to CPU idling, the port however doesn't seem to be on top of anyone's ToDo list. And according to your related forum post some issues still remain. Do you nevertheless believe the port will land soon? And is there anything I, as end-user, can help out with to speed up the process?

    • RE: Nexus 5 battery case: advice?

@taiga-woods Thanks. I would indeed want to try out that battery case I referred to. The problem is that I don't find it anywhere. Your sustainability argument is however also very compelling, so I might go for the OISLE battery extension after all. In any case, I will share my experiences, if any.

    • RE: Nexus 5 battery case: advice?

@cliffcoggin Thanks! As far as I know there are no replacement batteries on the market with a significantly higher capacity than the original one (2300mA). I believe this is the battery you are referring to. It's also just 2450mAh. Wouldn't you expect a similar battery life in case of similar battery capacities?

    • RE: Nexus 5 battery case: advice?

      @taiga-woods Thanks for thinking along!

Yes, I've also been just taking a powerbank with me to use when I run out of battery (which basically happens all the time). It's of course a solution.

For me the combination of smartphone + cable + powerbank gets a bit clumsy. It's not easy to quickly and safely tuck the combo away in your pocket (often loosening the cable in the process) and also for many other routine operations (eg taking a picture, or just phoning) the powerbank+cable get in the way (and not always you already have charged sufficiently to temporarily disconnect the powerbank again).

Using the battery case would make the system more sturdy. And you would not easily forget the extra battery at home (since it's integrated in your case). Also, if you look at this video , you see there is a button to switch off the battery connection. So, this would solve your second concern. I don't think it's a lot more heavy than another protective case (possibly solving your first concern), but it does admittedly look somewhat huge.

The second battery I referred to, the OISLE model, is basically just a powerbank, but one that you can connect without a cable. So this one you would not attach systematically, and only when needed. But it would also be a more sturdy solution than a cable connected powerbank.

At least, that's what I believe.

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 91 Saturday 19th December At 19:00 UTC

If time allows (given the philosophical and more general nature).

As an end user I'm more and more confronted with semi-necessary apps that I can't install on my smartphone (as they are only available for the two mobile OS'es the world seems to know about). It used to be only Whatsapp, and I actually owe UT a debt of gratitude for that, but now I also note increased pressure from utility providers (banks, phone, insurance, electricity) to make use of their dedicated apps. The recent state developed Covid-19 tracking apps could be another example.

How do you experience this? Have you already persuaded some business app developers to open up to UT? And are there reasons to hope for a more UT friendly app future (~ increasing mobile Linux user base, converging app development technologies,...)?

    • Nexus 5 battery case: advice?

Finally I managed to buy a working second-hand Nexus5 motherboard (shame on you, :-), you who sold me a smartphone 'for spare parts' that clearly had suffered severe water-damage and had hardly any parts to salvage, and you who sold me a 'to be tested' motherboard that turned out short-circuited and of which a component had clearly been stripped off) and I'm back in UBports business.

When my motherboard initially died, I should have probably dumped the poor phone and bought a more recent UBports compatible model, but for some reason I had grown attached to it and, also, my stubbornness to want to fix it grew with every failed repair attempt.

Still, there's a love and hate relationship between myself and Mr Hammerhead, as the poor battery life still keeps frustrating me. For that reason, I'm planning to now find a Nexus 5 battery case.

Sadly so far the relevant e-commerce sites I found, either list the cases as discontinued or don't ship to Europe (e.g. https://shopbastex.com/collections/zerolemon/products/lg-nexus-5-zerolemon-extended-battery).

Another solution would be to create a battery case myself, by attaching an external battery to the inside of a universal wallet case, and by connecting it with a small microUSB cable to the phone. But in my experience the weak link would be the USB cable getting loose or damaged easily. And I also have a bad experience with a previous wallet case, where the sticky patch got dirty and lost its 'stickiness' too soon.

Finally, a third option would be to attach a wireless external battery when needed, something like this one: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/OISLE-Ultra-Small-Cell-Phone-Portable_62386010726.html?spm=a2700.wholesale.deiletai6.5.67426b65ygx15i.

Any advice or experience with specific models of battery cases or of wireless external batteries to share? Thanks!

    • RE: Battery capacity test

I'm not 100% sure, but couldn't you just perform a test under the exact same conditions (e.g. no apps running in for- or background, no notifications active, 4G but no cellular data, no WIFI, same physical phone location, start from full battery) and see after 1 hour which battery is depleted less (percentage-wise)? You might need to reset the battery indicator in between by depleting the new battery fully after a full recharge.

    • RE: MTP access to Nexus 5 from Windows 10 PC

      Thanks, advocatux!

I had actually already seen that thread and I had already tried to follow the advice given there.

So I tried again, but without too much hope it would now work. But -O ye, of little faith- it did work! The different outcome might be related to the installation of the ClockworkMod ADB driver earlier today (http://adb.clockworkmod.com/), see step 6 below.

For future reference I will list the different steps (as the terms are not identical as in your list):

      1. Open Device Manager, fold out "TP-LINK Android Phone"
      2. Right click item "Google Nexus ADB Interface"
      3. Select "Update Driver" on Driver tab
      4. Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
      5. Select "Let me pick from a list of available drivers from my computer"
      6. Assure "Show compatible hardware" is checked and select "USB Composite Device" (I'm inclined to believe previously only "Google Nexus ADB Interface" was available, and the new device might have come along with earlier installation of the ClockworkMod ADB driver).
      7. Select Next, wait for driver installation and close.
      8. The device auto-mounts immediately!!!

    • MTP access to Nexus 5 from Windows 10 PC

When plugging in my Nexus 5 (OTA-9) into my (up-to-date) Windows 10 PC the phablet home folder does not auto-mount. The device instead enters into charging mode (battery icon turns green).

Developer mode is enabled and I do unlock the screen. And I have tried 4 different USB/micro-USB cables.

The device does mount when plugging in into an Ubuntu 16.04 PC. And at Windows' side, I do succeed in auto-mounting another Android (6.0) smartphone.

In Windows device manager the device is shown as a 'Google Nexus ADB Interface'. And the installed driver is ClockworkMod UniversalADB 7.0.0.4.

Btw, this post is really about getting the MTP access from Windows working, and not so much about accessing my files. Indeed, apart from accessing them through the Ubuntu 16.04 PC, I can also access them through SSH.

I hope I'm not missing the obvious here (like installing a dedicated MTP Windows tool) ...

I was requested to install Gaia GPS (https://www.gaiagps.com/). As I only have Ubports, I am looking for an alternative Ubports app that can a) records tracks, b) record waypoints on these tracks, c) associate comments and pictures with those waypoints and d) exports tracks as .gpx or .klm. I suppose we are not there yet? Or are we? Any suggestions?
