A command I've found which changes the authentication method from the command line is:

    /usr/share/ofono/scripts/set-context-property 1 AuthenticationMethod pap

The number may vary depending on which order the APNs are displayed in /usr/share/ofono/scripts/list-contexts. I found this on https://docs.droidian.org/info/apn/

@rdl85 I was notified by email. Carrier can see what device you use, I guess? I think they only notified affected devices.
My issue turned out to be device specific, not UT related. I use a Oneplus 5T, and the Telus network stopped supporting MMS on many older devices, mine included. Per Public Mobile forums, MMS wouldn't work with Android either on a Oneplus 5T, Iphone 5 and earlier, many other older Android phones.

    Freedom Mobile setup:
Freedom has separate APNs for internet and MMS, which my phone seems to need for MMS and internet to function simultaneously.
APNs loaded automatically on UT 20.04, so it all just worked right away. I had to do it manually on my device that still uses UT 16.04. Anyhow, it all works great, with standard lack of proper functionality of Group Messaging.

    In case needed:

    Internet
    APN: internet.freedommobile.ca

    MMS
    APN: mms.freedommobile.ca
    MMSC: http://mms.windmobile.ca
    Proxy: 74.115.197.70
    Proxy Port: 8080

Note that Freedom uses other networks when outside their own coverage, with free roaming. UT has "Data Roaming" turned off by default. This must be switched on under Settings->Mobile for data to work outside the Freedom network.

@opolork said in Can't open MMS.:

    No idea, sorry.

    Open terminal, write

    sqlite3 .local/share/history-service/history.sqlite

you should see an sqlite3 prompt, something like this

    phablet@ubuntu-phablet:~$ sqlite3 .local/share/history-service/history.sqlite SQLite version 3.11.0 2016-02-15 17:29:24 Enter ".help" for usage hints. sqlite>

write following command to the prompt

    select message, messageType, messageStatus from text_events where message like '%"Expire":"2023-01-10T12:52%';

you should get output like this

    {"Code":"x-ubports-nuntium-mms-error-activate-context","Message":"forced debug error: error-activate-context","Expire":"2023-01-15T18:18:59+01:00","Size":29696,"MobileData":false}|1|2

paste it here, there should be no personal info there, but check for sure before posting.

You can exit the sqlite3 prompt with

    .exit

Cheers, jezek. That's good to know for future reference. 👍

@mdl No progress. I contacted T-Mobile to see if they could fix it on their end. They tried but to no avail. I can receive an error message letting me know that someone tried to send an MMS message, but that is it. I cannot participate in group chats, receive large messages, images, etc. Kinda sucks, but it's good enough for me. I hope MMS can get sorted out on UT eventually. I might upload a log if it would actually help the developers solve this issue.

Somewhat unrelated, however: I did, find out that the reason I cannot receive calls is because UT (on my Pixel 3a) can seemingly only do SMS I/O and data while on LTE for some reason. While using LTE, I could not make or recieve calls. I also noticed that when trying to call someone, the call would not start dialing for a few seconds, then the service would completely shut off, then my phone would switch to 3G data, then the phone would start dialing. I found that by limiting the data to 3G, I can finally recieve spam calls from the CDC, scammers, and family again! Woohoo! (hope this information helps someone) Should probably file a bug report.

@lsitongia OK that is some progress, with the PRODATA for Internet APN entry. There are some MMS patches getting made as we speak, they are being targeted for OTA-21.

Again, the ofono 28 linked above for a "combined APN" (for "Internet + MMS") isn't quite ready but will further improve things when it gets in: I am currently using it and it works well (I can get MMS on 3G now, couldn't before with separate APN for MMS and Internet), but it will reset APN entries often (so I needed to edit the "defaults" so when they are deleted and reset they are still correct) so there are some bugs / blockers. Defaults come from /usr/share/mobile-broadband-provider-info/serviceproviders.xml

@Teigneux Maybe it could be that both your and my phone denies mms, but your provider just scrap it whereas my provider stores it and send that notification? Could be worth calling them to get some help figuring out.
