      @developerbayman Check DRAM $$ lately ? What percent of your $500 budget is reserved for DRAM. Look up how much you can afford. I imagine you want a better phone (LCD wise, etc) than pine phone pro. It was over $400 ...

    • RE: Fairphone 5: A Cautionary Tale for a "Repairable" Device

      @Futura Thank you for that (Murena comment).
      I recently researched this via Google & reply said 'Fairphone North American support via Murena'.
      Sadly, you discovered NOT the case !
      It is too bad that details like this don't yet have a place on the devices pages.
      It is one thing if you have an old phone, and want to try UT. Maybe you already got years of use.
      But to spend new money, and then have this problem, & no forewarning about lack of support in various countries, is just depressing !
      Thank you for your report on this.

      Thank You.
      I did not mean to post twice.
      I did the first, and the website gave me an error. So, I gave up.
      Then read other new posts. Also thought, maybe wait a bit. Did not see my first post, so I tried again.
      No error.
      So, I thought only the second post went through.
      Is there a way to delete one ?

      On Nord N10, 24.04-1.n daily, what is best way to jump back a week or so ?

      Zero cell signal most of the time after update, & no voice calls even when a few bars pop up (they go away).

      I thought it worked better last week, so I want to go back about 7 days.

      Suggestions ?

      @projectmoon - Hmmm. Thank you, I had forgotten that. My memory of this is vague, or, I might have ruled it out due to being on MVNO, and/or the large carriers might offer the service when you are paying high dollars (unlimited data).
      I will revisit that.
      Interesting that Google never suggested that in my recent searches for solutions. I must have phrased the queries poorly.

      @lsitongia

      I searched for a recent (last 24 hours or so) comment I saw about a problem with 24.04-2.n - by vverve in the thread: Oneplus n10 24.04-2.x follow up.
      Vverve stated had to drop back from 204.04-2.n (version 182 ?) to 24.04-1.n due to serious problem.
      Maybe related ?

      @lsitongia

      I am on 'daily' 24.04-1.n. I have noticed an issue where I check updates, after a week, and sometimes it shows none (when I know there should be at least 1). Touching the 'retry' shows the circular thing, wait, and still none. POPO or reboot, then try again & update available !
      So, never give up ...

      I have not yet tried 24.04-2.n because I sporadically see concerning forum posts (including another thread in past 2 days).

    • RE: Forwarding SMS messages when cell signal unavailable ?

      I found a temporary solution (passive antenna hardware under $100).
      Limited to 1 very specific location (semi-moveable), but it solves the main problem: ZERO cell signal in rural basement office/workshop.
      So, it might enable me to really start to use UT:

      I installed a directional outdoor cellular antenna ($30 ebay) on a pole outside, aimed it generally toward a cell tower (based on map search), connected 50 ft (17meter) of cable (single piece of coax), then indoor antenna ($12).
      No amplifier.
      Indoor antenna is mounted horizontally on a plastic base a few inches (75mm) above office desk (formica surface, on sheet metal frame), and set cell phone (Nord N10) on top.
      Phone now has enough 'bars' (3 or 4) to use voice calling and exchange SMS.
      Location is open workshop / office, so I should be able to hear ringing and most notifications.
      Preliminary testing, but initial results are encouraging.
      Only issue is, has to stay VERY close to antenna (and orientation probably matters. Not tested yet).
      I mention this solution because a no-amplifier system might work for others, and is fairly cost effective.

      I might still order a used amplifier, which would enable moving phone away from the antenna (to anywhere in room).

      For the failed to power off while holding power key a long time:

      did you try combo of: holding volume up key and power key for a while ?

      I think that is what I did after my N10 would not power off

    • Forwarding SMS messages when cell signal unavailable ?

      Anyone know of a way to forward SMS messages to 2nd phone number, when main number is unavailable (weak cell, airplane mode, etc) ?

      After many weeks of asking questions (here and Google) regarding voice calls over WiFi, considering software solutions and mixed (hardware / software) solutions, I finally had the sense to ask about voice call forwarding to second phone which has functional WiFi calling. Google said 'possible'. Carrier said 'we support that'. [just requires 2nd phone line, and phone, and remembering to keep it charged. tedious but workable].
      I set it up & tested it. Seems to work !

      So, now the last critical problem is no SMS over WiFi, when cell signal is too weak.

      My requirement is communication with 'average' user, who has only OEM android or ios messaging installed on their phone. That rules out asking everyone I need to communicate with to add and learn new apps.

      Asking google about that, answer was that any SMS forwarding solution would be linked to WiFi calling.

      Can anyone shed light on options here ? or UT plans or progress (testing status, etc) ?

      you are saying 24.04-1.x vs 24.04-2.x, right ?
      Could you list a few comparisons between the 2 version ?
      What works well or not in each ?

      @developerbayman
      I read of your efforts with interest, partially because you seem to have far more coding knowledge than I do.

      I am here on UT forums, because it seems to be the best way to get closer to 'real linux' on my phone.

      RasPi already runs Debian / Rasberry Pi OS.

      So, I do not fully understand the degree of benefit putting UT on RasPi's.

      Please, as 'product champion' for this idea, could you list a few benefits ?

    • RE: lets talk about the phasing out of haluim

      @arubislander said:
      The thing is that any new support for hardware is likely to land in newer version of the kernel. Halium ports are tied to a specific version of the kernel for ABI compatibility with the drivers the device vendor provides. And backporting those new drivers to the older kernels would probably be more work than it's worth.

      Ahhh. Excellent point. Thank you.

      so, for @developerbayman style AI assisted concept to work, either every single hardware driver would have to be created & built into modern kernel (for each phone or all phones), or, to use halium layer for the difficult parts, would mean custom modifying every kernel, for each old device, to use the newly created drivers and still talk to halium for some.

      So, AI could make this possible, by saving time in some areas.

      But, it seems this would end up not reducing the huge number of variations for all the different phone models.

      Am I missing something here ?
