You can set a custom ringtone in the settings app without copying them to the system directory. However, custom notification tone is not yet officially supported but you can do it in UT Tweak Tool which basically does the same thing as you did 🙂
@halucigenia Please see this comment as posted in the thread suggested by @Ingo. It resolves the situation well for now.

I am fully against any cooperation with Huawei sorry to say. As I said yesterday in the supergroup: No we wont ask for this. Huawei is in a very political discussion and the foundation needs to stay neutral. We will not endorse, recommend any or cooperate with companies that are under the impression of political influence.
That topic is now locked and I am going to do the same here for the same reasons I said there.
I think that really puts an end to this thread so am going to lock it. There is always Off Topic if needed.
So, I eventually got around to replacing that headphone jack. I had been putting it off as the issue did not happen very frequently, but just recently it has been switching to headphone mode without a reboot. Also as replacing the headphone jack required removing the motherboard I was somewhat trepidatious about it.
No difference though, it still boots up in headphone mode until I cool it down for a period of time.
I will see if it lasts in speaker mode for longer over next few weeks.
In the meantime I have bought another pro5 advertised on amazon as a UK 32GB version. I will concentrate on re-partitioning and putting 16.04 on it.
