      This sure sounds like a frightening statement. I'm glad I don't feel that way.

      You do not know the half of it.

      In Sweden we are a very digital society and this we have BankID, which is an private organisation. The idea is that Banks validate your ID which then allows BankID to issue a certificate to a device (application) and allows you to Authenticate yourself digitally on the majority of the Swedish services.

        and much more.

      While there competitors like FrejaEID its not mush against the dominator BankID. BankID Mobile (the most common form) is only available for Apple IOS and for Google Android officially. There used to be a Linux client but it get discontinued and there is a windows client available is for enterprise purposes and requires a physical card.

      Being somewhat young in Sweden today you REQUIRE your phone this sole purpose, to house and App to be able to Authenticate.

      I wish there was an strict firewall native in Ubuntu Touch so that we would see and control what is allowed to talk. A local Keepass should not talk to the internet.

      If the app is confined (as this one is) you don't need to blindly trust that the package in the open store was compiled by the code that is linked, to be sure it doesn't phone home. If you know what to look for, you can download the .click package and examine the contents. The most important is the .apparmor file, which describes what permissions the packages requests from the system.

      Admittingly, I am lacking full understanding of how this .click system works nor having deep understanding of how App Armor so I am at an disadvantage.

      But thanks for the note, I will need to re up on both .click packages!

      Where did you get the idea that it does?

      My mistake, I should have been more clear that it was an example case that a password app should never need to talk with the internet, which believe it or not, is common with apps on Google Play store.

    • RE: Potentially turning a negative of Google's tightening restrictions into a positave

      While I agree to 100% I believe there will be several major obstacles that needs to be faced by the FOSS community.

      Unlike computers and many other appliances where FOSS has started to take market, smartphone has become an extension of you as a person. As in;

      • We are heavily dependant to major organisations to develop apps for Banking, Digital ID or even other services. Many of these organisation has incentive to keep going Google/Apple route for reasons. Worst would be if they start limiting where you can connect from.

      • Hardware which supports opensource alternative is starting to expand but is still in its infancy which makes it more sensitive for regulations and is tougher to get that competitive.

      • Seeing as US, UK, AU and even EU is starting to foster acts, regulations and laws to control both HW and software freedom. Referring to EUs laws of standard charge cable or EU's laws regarding to chat control.

      Chat Control and Digital ID is one of the reasons why I am about moving to Ubuntu Tough, and for this reason I will continue to cheer, support and bet on these intiatives!

      TL;DR
      While the escalation of government control of our communications is increasing we are at a very sensitive stage still.

    • RE: Crazy stuff: sudo snap install signal-desktop

      Nice find!

      Unfortunately its the desktop app which cannot be a "main" app, as in you always need to keep a separate phone.

      @pparent said in Crazy stuff: sudo snap install signal-desktop:

      I've actually succeeded to start the app with acceptable scaling by creating a dummy unconfined app with simply a .desktop file with the launcher:

      Exec=env GDK_SCALE=2 /snap/bin/signal-desktop --no-sandbox %U

      That might be worth a guide/instruction with steps on how to do.

      it seems that the provider of this software already provides a snap for x86, so maybe you could try to ask them if they could build it for ARM64 ? or even try to search the snap store in the unlikely case where they had already done the job but not yet updated their web site ?

      While its not a snap they do have an ARM64 already, however its desktop. I hav not tested yet but I believe its not optimized for UT direkt install. Thinking Libretine..

      I have to do some tinkering 😁

      Thinking closer, this is offtopic. I should probably make another thread for this 🤔

      The fact that i need to use certain apps for bankind, digital ID or even enterprise stuff is a fact but not the point. I am well aware that I need to use Waydroid till the world is more mature and restarts its effort for supporting Linux 😁 .

      My main problem is to replace the daily android apps where many even already exists in the Linux ecosystem.
      To name a few;

      • 1Password
      • KeepassXC
      • Signal
      • HomeAssistant
      • pure firefox

      Even if I can install them, most are designed for Desktop usage and not mobile device.

      None, of these are Ubuntu Touch "issues/faults" yet they remain as a factor for my user experience and a bigger factor for my to swap my daily.

      😬

      NGL, @grenudi I am note sure where your determination of hammering down on UT is based of.
      The way you set up this thread I can see its not so much aimed towards the developers of UT but rather the community behind them but what is the gain?
      Are you trying to get resources diverted to another project or a merge?

      And to be totally honest, I bought an €700 phone (Volla Quintus) which is running UT and yes, atm I cannot use it as a daily...
      I am very wary of how (hopefully not if) I am to make the switchover from my current Android phone. But in my eye and experience its just a matter of when this could be a base of a daily driver for me.

      But bully be me, I will not stop hoping, supporting or cheering for any project with the right intentions!

    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 176 call for questions.

      I am to be a user soon as I got myself a Volla Quintus but have yet to make the switch. Looking forward to see where this is going as this is AWESOME.
      I have been experimenting with the phone and its setup to prepare myself and the environment I require.

      I hope nope but I haven't seen any answers to my questions somewhere, otherwise my questions are as follows:

      • How are things going with the project, how does it feel? 🙂
        I am rooting for you in the limited way I can atm! You have no idea of how many are looking for an alternative for the droid and fruit.

      • What are plans for applications and their adaptation?
        at the moment we have an appstore which is not connected to the others, snap or apt, and so far unique to Ubuntu Touch but this slows the community developments of apps.
        (I know you can activate APT/SNAP or use Libretine however it requires some knowledge and creates some risks of a bad user experience)

      • What are the plans for security and privacy control?
        Will there be a way to control access for apps or internal services through the main UI?

    • RE: Waydroid / Google Play Store / Google Services

      Since Waydroid is using Linage you can still limit what the apps and services in the Android OS, such as Google Services, can access.

      Ive also noticed that both F-droid and Play Store auto updates when Waydroid is running, however
      they can lock up when booting Waydroid freshly since they seem to complain about time not being correct.

      I might be forced to use waydroid since my country have apps I need that only exists on iOS or Android. So this Topic is very relevant for me as in needing setup waydroid and make it a dev device
      since Waydroid is not certified ( Waydroid: Google Play Certification )

      Have not tried it myself yet.

      Otherwise its still waydroid, so their official instructions should work;
