@pappetsu Well, I wish you the best of luck, but the chances are not high. If people want to deGoogle, they generally buy a suitable device, which is much more likely to be easily deGoogled. In other words, they do the research before getting the phone. I think the CAT S42 H+ deserves a port of Ubuntu Touch because this smartphone is very robust, anti shock, etc. Those are good reasons to want it, but not all devices are equally suitable for porting. For example, it needs to be possible to unlock the bootloader. So people who are looking to port a new device will always look at feasibility first and foremost, and the other properties of the phone come after that.

@lundrin17 It's about the first VP, not the X right ? Maybe you'll have more chances searching for a gigaset GS290 screen, as it's the same hardware, but way more spreaded than the VollaPhone. Edit : after searching the net a bit, it seems difficult to find spare screen even for GS290... Maybe you'll have more chance with screen "part number" that you should find on it after tearing it down. I found a how to tear it down video : https://youtu.be/62ur_58mLK4 Wish you luck. Edit 2 : I broke my canonical Ubuntu Touch MX4 screen some time ago, first i found an unofficial replacement screen (20€), wich had a very poor touch feeling, plus bad light uniformity, so i searched for a used MX4 with original screen, and found one (non UT compatible unfortunately) for about 50€, and teared it down to get its screen for my MX4, i still have it. So if you find a cheap used GS290, it can be another solution.

@ngux Sorry not saying your not but are you sure this is Ubuntu Touch and not just Ubuntu with touch working from the tablet. Only I am not aware of UT running on this device.

@kugiigi A pity. My smartphone is quite customized and it should stay as is without the risk of destabilization and reinstalling everything for the nth time .... I would do without this beautiful animated screen.

It gets my vote. I have written to our Government (not EU any more) regarding this as we as a world human population have to stop putting perfectly viable electrical and electronic equipment into landfill. Apple and Samsung in the electronics industry are two of the worst publicly known offenders as their drvices orphan so quickly - even though they say they don't orphan devices and their devices are repairable (not). This is one of the main reasons I think UT is the way forward - a community driven project that captures a small portion of the devices that would be disposed of as they are orphaned. All hardware drivers should be open source so they can be integrated into the like of UT, Sailfish and others. Bootloaders should be easily unlocked. Hardware should be easily replaceable and repairable.

Thank you for advices! I installed Android 5.1.1, but to make it work, manual formatting Data and Cache in ext4 was necessary. Installation of Nethunter was smooth.

@duncancragg said in Vulkan and USC 0.9.0 (Mir): do you mean there was work done inside /Mesa/ to support mirclient's Vulkan buffers Vulkan, like GL and GLES, is an API. Mesa is an implementation of graphics API specifications like GL, GLES and Vulkan. For each API work is needed to support mirclient.

Trying to figure out what would be the significant benefits of the Volla 22 over a OnePlus 6T (8/128) running UT. Assuming I will have it running UBports and not looking for trazillion megapixel camera options, both screens are > 400 ppi, what should make me walk away from the 6T that can be had at appr. €120 (used)? The 4500 mAH removable battery (6T=3700 mAH non-rem.)?? Not intending to bash the Volla 22 offer (earliest backer), however wouldn't a Pinephone pro (linux mainline kernel) be a more obvious choice when it comes to helping the Linux community push forward?

@crew51m Porting Ubuntu Touch is not the same as porting and android rom, so be ready to face issues you'd not get in android world. Good luck in porting, sur it will be usefull for other users if you suceed.

@cliffcoggin I think my favourite phone has to be the Nexus 4. Small, compact and so easy to repair. Unfortunately it will lose support when UT moves on to 20.04.

@rvan Now I understand. The "warning" is only alerting or reminding you that it needs your permission to access parts of your phone in order to do its job. It is nothing to be concerned about, so go ahead and install it.

@moem of course the most likely answer to this post was "nice idea, why don't you do it yourself" and I understand why Not knowing anything about porting it seems hard for me to do anything meaningful - but actually, reading this: https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/device/x86/ I understand I should be able to just install Lomiri as an alternative Desktop, knowing that its experimental. Would that approach give the full UT experience, also install the core apps along with it?
