    • RE: Ubuntu Touch Q&A 187 call for questions

      With the Big Tech corporate surveillance state growing and growing, options such as UBPorts Ubuntu Touch are an absolute lifeline for freedom loving individuals all over the world. Big Tech agendas’ thrives because of the vast amount of profit they earn and are able pour back into their future plans while the hero developers from UBPorts and those amazing volunteer developers do so from the goodness in their hearts but of more simpler financial means. It seems like such an unfair fight and uphill battle for immense stakes (freedom and right to privacy).

      As a simple individual of modest means, who wants to help and contribute to freedom enabling solutions such as UBPorts’ Ubuntu Touch and the volunteer developers, what would you recommend as the best ways to donate personal donations and time to help the cause? To help the amazing hero developers fighting the good fight. We need them. We won’t maintain personal freedom and privacy without them. God bless you all as your efforts are so greatly appreciated, admired and respected! Godspeed.

    • RE: Signal UT: Signal-Desktop for Ubuntu Touch

      I had SignalUT working okay but then had other issues (with primary Molly, Waydroid) causing me to uninstall (click trash icon in OpenStore) and reinstall several times.

      Now, it seems SignalUT won't start (it just hangs indefinitely). I'd like to cleanly uninstall, reinstall and then link to my (now working) Molly Foss within Waydroid.

      Is there a more brute force method to cleanly uninstall everything (than trash can icon in OpenStore)? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions.

    • RE: Cant install Whatsapp or Signal on Waydroid

      This issue had to do with signalcaptcha not working correctly so I was never verified account (that's why message not delivered). Fix was not use Brave Browser (ad blocking), DNS flush and turn off VPN. Then signalcaptcha worked, properly verified and now it is working.

      I'll leave this info here just in case others encounter this issue.

    • RE: Cant install Whatsapp or Signal on Waydroid

      Read through the posts and having some issues with Molly Foss not working and would appreciate any thoughts or insights from the community. I feel like I am close. Thanks in advance.

      Running 24.04-1.2 stable. I have Waydroid installed (via Waydroid helper from OpenStore). I installed F-droid and then Molly Foss (both within Waydroid).

      When I start Waydroid and then Molly Foss and configured setting so that I am visible to everyone via phone number (at least initially) and have a friend who is helping me get started who also set to be visible to everyone via phone number.
      I try to send a simple chat ("Hello"), it says "Send Paused" (and it is not delivered). I am also prompted with a hCapcha verification (to prevent spam). When I try to call to a fellow Signal user, the message says "Contact will get a message request from you and if accepted then you can make a call" (or something like this). However, the message is never sent nor received.

      I can confirm that internet is working within Waydroid as I can surf the web in browser and also ping and hit various IP addresses.

      Has anyone encountered something like this? Is there some setting that perhaps is not configured that I need? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

      I really enjoyed this. Sam is hilarious. I also appreciate that he is probably much more technical than he lets on. He makes it relatable and funny ... yet keeping it technically truthful (while embellishing). Quite a talent this guy!

      Good to know. I'm running 24.04-1.2 stable and T-Mobile.

      I misread your post. Somehow I interpreted the phone wasn't working well, but you clearly stated that it's just not a daily driver unless WiFi calling or native VOIP. (neither of which I've used... my requirements are just for the working phone which it has done well thus far). Thanks and sorry for my confusion. Hope you find a way to meet your requirements!

      @Leroy_Linux We experimented with SIP in the dialer and it is capable of making and receiving VoIP calls. Audio routing needs troubleshooting as it could only either send or receive audio, not both. Also, it could stand to be integrated better so that it is prettier and the dial buttons show up during calls. Any help with that would be appreciated. We have a telegram group just for this subject.

      Yes, clarify for others is my goal as well. Nice that we (along with others here) are like minded in this way.

      What carrier are you using? What version of Ubuntu Touch are you running?

      T-Mobile works well for me. I tried Ting first, but had issues. I didn't bother to troubleshoot knowing from others that T-Mobile worked. So, I just switched and happy with the results.

      Good luck!

    • RE: OnePlus just informed me they will NOT unlock bootloader for a device on bought on Ebay.

      @oldbutndy

      I think we're in agreement. When I said Global I was referring to the firmware for the easy unlock. The 2 models of the OnePlus Nord N10 5g with the direct bootloader unlock (e.g not requiring OnePlus support to give you a token) are the BE2026 which from the Ubuntu Touch device page informs to apply the Global firmware Oxygen 10.5.7 and the BE2029 which informs to apply the EU firmware Oxygen 10.5.7 in order for Ubuntu Touch to work properly (Halium needs to interact with those specific firmware).

      For this particular phone, other devices, for example BE2028 (T-Mobile) and another for Metro, are generally tied to a particular carrier initially, require unlock token from vendor support regardless if Global or EU firmware is applied directly to the device.

      @rocket2nfinity

      Thanks for all the helpful knowledge and suggestions you've provided all over the forums. I've learned so much.

      Just an update. I recently tried to unlock a OnePlus Nord N10 5g phone. Unfortunately, OnePlus didn't give me an unlock token and I tried the recommendation of using oppo decrypt/encrypt to use the Global BE2026 firmware and package it as BE2028 (Project ID=20888) to match the phone model in hopes that the Global firmware would allow the option to directly unlock the bootloader from the phone or adb/fastboot (e.g. without requiring/begging OnePlus support).

      I was able to use oppo decrypt/encrypt and built the new .ops file. MSMDownloadTool applied the fireware to the phone without issue. However, it did not allow unlock directly from the phone (still needed OnePlus support to send me an unlock token).

      I may give the N100 a try since it seems this model did allow the unlock directly for you (e.g. OnePlus Support not required). It seems more and more, vendors are putting the cab-bash on giving out unlock tokens. I'm interested in trying on a phone where I definitely do NOT need vendor to unlock.

      As a side topic, I did see an announcement recently that in 2027, Motorola will release some models (didn't say which ones) with Graphene OS. So, that is promising for the future.

    • RE: Observations on battery life - please share your experiences

      Just wanted to share that I had some battery issues (draining too fast, often draining the entire battery within 1 day) with a OnePlus Nord N10 5g. The phone I purchased was an old refurbished one and I'm not sure if the battery was refreshed or if it was the original battery.

      Nonetheless, my battery issues have seemed to resolved and thought I'd share. It may help others or not. So, take it or leave it.

      By default, the screen brightness was quite high (to the far right on the slider) and I can't recall if "Adjust automatically" was enabled or not. I manually selected the screen brightness to the lowest level I could tolerate without feeling like I couldn't see the screen. Surprisingly for me, I can move the slider almost all the way to the left. I also unchecked the "Adjust automatically". So, now the screen brightness is using the minimal battery. (I believe this was the biggest gain for me).

      Furthermore, I am fairly conscious to disable WiFi unless I am actively using it for internet access.

      That is all I did and now the battery lasts a couple days without charging (vs completely drain in 1 day) and does not drain much at all.

      One last thing I am mindful of is to only use the charging cable that came with the device. I think the fast chargers that are more modern may easily cycle/overcharge older batteries and reduce the battery's long term life. With all batteries, there is a limited number of charging cycles and you'll notice that each 100% full charge may not last as long as when it was brand new. Overcharging (while at 100%) and/or letting the battery drain completely to 0% may reduce the life of the battery a bit. So, being mindful to unplug when at 100% and to start charging before it gets too low may help in maximizing its life.

      Hope this helps.

      Good luck maximizing your device's battery life!

      @ma
      Thanks for your suggestion. Things are working now since downgrading to 24.04.1.x RC.

      I think the 24.04.2.x version had several things in read-only mode (only guessing from reading the logs that were generated). Even when trying commands as sudo, received similar errors "need root access, read access, etc".

      Appreciate your input.

      @idonthatevests

      Thank you very much for the suggestion. I downgraded to 24.04.1.x RC and confirmed that VoLTE is working. Just curious if there where one can find notes with specific functionality in each version available? I tried to look for this but only found general info (and in threads for this phone it was mistaken that only 2.x was where VoLTE was functioning).

      Again, thanks so much. Also, Waydroid installation was successful (using the Waydroid helper) on this 24.04.1.x RC version. Thank you very much once again! Much appreciated.

      @gpatel-fr

      Hi, thanks for your reply. Yeah, I'm running latest version of Ubuntu Touch (UT) for VOLTE as for my particular phone model, stable doesn't have functioning VOLTE. As a phone (talk/text), everything works well on the latest UT for me. I was experiencing errors with Waydroid that I didn't see in searching other posts, so wanted to inquire (wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong since it was my first time with Waydroid).

      I was hoping I could get Signal working well but perhaps I need to downgrade to stable or be patient/wait.

      Any users out there having success with Waydroid on the latest? or experiencing similar issues?

      Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm always up to learn more, to try things out, help with the improvement of things, etc.

    • Waydroid won't start, says waydroid init requires root access...

      Hello UT friends,

      New to Waydroid and a bit stuck. When I try to run "waydroid init", I get an error stating that "init needs root access".

      What I've done so far. From Open Store, installed Waydroid Helper, clicked install. Seemed to go well. I see the Waydroid icon as an installed app. However, when I click Waydroid app, the phone shows what seems to be the startup screen (Ubports ... 5 dots... it blinks through 2 times). I have to key in my phone unlock code. (seems that trying to start Waydroid looks like it reboots or restarts phone?).

      However, no Waydroid. From Terminal, when I type "waydroid init" I get an error saying that "init requires root access". I tried the commands from the main Waydroid thread, but still not working.
      https://forums.ubports.com/topic/5907/open-ubuntu-touch-to-all-android-applications/115

      I've uninstalled from Waydroid helper and tried to reinstall, but same issues, same error. Any thoughts? Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

      (Running OnePlus Nord N10 5g, Ubuntu Touch 24.04.2.x)

      Cheers, Leroy
