    • Making Ubuntu Touch an easy choice

      https://forums.ubports.com/topic/1596/promotion-as-one-of-main-categories-on-this-forum/4

      @Pulsar33 says:
      IMHO, Ubuntu Touch will easily conquer the world if and only if :

      There is enough Core Apps free of major bugs
      There is enough Hardware for which it works
      People can easily develop or port applications
      Without that, you can do as many promotion as you want, it will be useless

      The pre-installed apps seem to load all right, except for WebView Shell, which I don't think is even an app.

      After some continued use, they all seem to crash on open. Functionality seems to come back sometimes.

      I was able to install other apps. BUT, no on-screen keyboard 😛

      NOTE: Updating Ubuntu Touch will kill anbox completely, and you have to re-flash the anbox kernel again.

    • Sony Xperia XZ (F8331 / Kagura) Porting

      [EDIT] See this post: https://forums.ubports.com/post/38767 below. Thank you, Konrad!

      I was inspired to try out the porting guide during the live porting session this past weekend:

      I was able to make halium-boot and systemimage once, but the device didn't boot in the end.

      There are a number of challenges with this device:

      1. There is no official lineageos port: I found this possibly working port https://github.com/djselbeck/android_device_sony_kagura/

      2. This is a "tone" device. It might need the SW_binaries_for_Xperia_AOSP_N_MR1_5.7_r1_v08_tone.img from (https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/guides/kernel-compilation-guides/how-to-build-and-flash-a-linux-kernel-for-aosp-supported-devices)

      3. Manifest is a hackjob assuming that since the Lineageos port borrows from the "sumire" device, that copying those parts might work:

      <manifest>
          <project path="device/sony/kagura" name="android_device_sony_kagura" remote="djselbeck" />
          <project path="device/sony/common" name="android_device_sony_common" remote="los" />
          <project path="hardware/sony/timekeep" name="android_hardware_sony_timekeep" remote="los" />
          <project path="kernel/sony/msm8994" name="ubports/android_kernel_sony_msm8994" remote="hal" />
          <project path="vendor/sony" name="proprietary_vendor_sony" remote="them" />
      </manifest>

      Adding the remote as well, assuming that it is useful:

      <remote name="djselbeck"
              fetch="https://github.com/djselbeck"
              revision="cm-14.1" />

      1. There was no vendor file in https://github.com/TheMuppets/proprietary_vendor_sony
        So, assumed that this might get somewhere:
        copy vendor/sony/sumire to vendor/sony/kagura
        rename sumire-vendor.mk to kagura-vendor.mk

      2. Not sure about this one. It complained the first time, but not in later attempts
        edit device/sony/kagura/BoardConfig.mk to reflect kernel m8994 instead of m8996

      3. There is no kernel config, so... (again maybe a better kernel config somewhere)
        copy sumire kernel config to kernel/sony/msm8994/arch/arm64/config/tone_kanguro_defconfig

      4. When Buiding system image i had to use

      LANG=C make systemimage

      However, later attempts didn't make it far. I mistakenly used the "lunch" command the first time, but probably should use "breakfast". Attempts have been unsuccessful.

      Just thought I'd share that and hope that somebody else is interested and has a better idea what to do.

      The device, however, is not very friendly to android roms in general, so expectations are pretty low.

    • RE: "5 minute" tasks

      Here are some 5-minute tasks that will directly help today:

      1. Contact someone you know and tell them about UBports. Bonus if they are a developer.
      2. Say hello to someone in the community; get to know them; show gratitude
      3. Submit your "profile" to @wayneoutthere for the community inventory. Who is who?
      4. Confirm a bug, comment, etc. as @advocatux mentioned.
      5. File a bug
      6. Commit to helping in a focus group. This will lead to more tasks.
      7. Reach out to stale contacts and see what they are up to. Eventually down the road you can talk to them about ubports.
      8. Tell us about another 5-minute task
      9. Try a new app, comment on it.
      10. Write one sentence of a blog post.
      11. Write down suggestions.
      12. Respond to someone's problem on the forum
      13. Help someone reach the Welcome and Install room
      14. Come up with an Ubuntu Touch pitch
      15. Write down one thing that could improve and how to improve it. e.g. part of website
      16. Read this list.
      17. Learn how to use github
      18. Ask a question on the forum, or Q&A.
      19. Subscribe to the UBports Patreon: BONUS - think of how we can use that channel better.
      20. Write one line/verse of a song
      21. Transcribe 5-mins of a Ubuntu Touch Q&A
      22. Create a forum topic from an audiocast, or telegram chat idea
      23. Repeat anything above until something is done.

    • RE: Navigating (enabling developer mode) with broken screen (oneplus 3t)

      @Toadtoad
      Wow. I think this is it. Even with the screen not awake this works.

      1. Hold the superkey (windows key) for about a second.
        While holding press 4. which is the default location of settings.
      2. This gets you to the login, where you type your password and press enter.
      3. Now phone is in settings. Press TAB 24 times. Then Press space.
      4. Now you are in About. Press TAB 7 times. Then press space.
      5. Now you are in Developer Mode. Press TAB 3 times. Then press space. This enables/disables developer mode.

      rocket chat

      It's very cool that your whole workplace uses Ubuntu!

      It looks like you can login to the chat via web browser (https://rocket.chat/docs/user-guides/connecting-to-a-server/)

      So, theoretically a UT webapp could be used in this situation. I would say, try loging into the rocket chat that you use in morph browser on UT. If that works, then you should be able to get it going in a webapp.

    • RE: New Audiocast Available Now

      This is a hot topic, but I think it's important to follow what @UniSuperBox has mentioned.

      Great discussion though! There are many other topics that we can discuss openly like:

      • What kind of "bounty" system would be most attractive to developers and non-developers?
      • Critical missing features/apps (related to above point), as also mentioned in the recent Q&A
      • Companies and benevolent dictator(s).

      Thanks for your thoughts, sunshine 🙂

    • RE: No releases for a long time

      Hi @UKPhil ,

      If you are on the 15.04 channel, then you won't be receiving many (any?) updates as development has shifted to 16.04.

      16.04 dev has daily updates.

      16.04 RC was also released, and is almost as functional as 15.04. Some applications still have not made the change, so it may not be ready as a daily driver.

      https://ubports.com/blog/ubports-blog-1/post/ubuntu-touch-rc-ota-4-148

      Soon, OTA-4 (16.04 stable) will be released, and should continue receiving updates.

      Hello,
      Sorry if this is mentioned in the thread already, but I couldn't find it.

      What is the deal with "oem unlock" / unlocking the bootloader?

      I bought a device off ebay and it oem unlock was greyed out and said connect to the internet to unlock. In the end I couldn't do it, so i returned the device 😞

      Since then I've been asking sellers if the bootloader can be unlocked on 3a xl or 3a, and they are all saying "NO" . So, which ones can be unlocked or how do you do it?

      @NeoTheThird I could probably help on this matter, but I will say that I don't quite know what this all means.
      Are these binaries the DRM keys?
      What are the prerequisites for testing? I've already installed UT and I did not manage to make a backup of the stock DRM keys beforehand.
      What will these binaries do for the phone?
      And of course what sort of risks am I looking at? (because while this phone isn't my DD yet, I do want it to be soon. I don't want to brick it)

      Same for me 🐶
