@rob said in What's Inside the Black Box of Ubuntu Touch?: The point of this exercise is to see if I can do normal Linux things on a UT device vs. let's say using PostmarketOS. This is a valid comparison and an often made one between the OS options. I think this is a poor distinction to make. Ubuntu Touch is not a traditional Linux distribution, so no, you cannot treat it like one. It is an OS designed with phone/tablet use in mind, and with security restraints to that effect. It's only a valid comparison for people who do not want a phone or tablet, but instead want something they can treat like a traditional Linux distro, in their pocket. And those are two very different things, for which making the comparison in such a manner, doesn't promote the benefits of such a system, and treats the traditional and less secure way as something inherently better. @rob said in What's Inside the Black Box of Ubuntu Touch?: Partly this ability to play with this stuff is why we're on Linux. Partly it's also because of privacy advantages. Android is still Linux. So far, the things you've talked about in terms of building and running an app directly on the phone, have absolutely nothing to do with whether there is a Linux kernel running on the device though. Linux is running on billions of devices in the wild. Simply because you can't ssh into those devices arbitrarily and do some traditional things you might be used to on Debian or Ubuntu on your PC, doesn't make those devices not be Linux. Android is the same. @rob said in What's Inside the Black Box of Ubuntu Touch?: In any case, I've concluded that Libertine isn't the answer but need more space on the host to do more experimentation. Hopefully the Pinephone will give that space. Libertine is the answer, as it is what provides a container for installing and running legacy apps. However, it doesn't magically make those apps responsive or usable on phones, nor does it enable a full traditional Linux distribution experience. Likewise, Pinephone is not an answer here, as it is not the only device that UT will be supporting. The rootfs contents (in terms of what is supported by UT) must remain consistent across devices, regardless of whether they use libhybris or not, and whether or not they are stuck with Android style partitioning. Doing anything different in this area across different devices will only make it harder to support, harder to build apps for UT, and harder for users to use UT. Those are all things we clearly do not want.

@sverzegnassi , one problem i have after trying this development version of the file manager is that both *.mp4 and *.MOV files are played back heavily in pink color after installing it, and the problem does not go away when i uninstalling it either. I posted about it here as well, https://forums.ubports.com/topic/600/cannot-play-the-old-mov-made-by-the-canonical-image/4 , but did not get any suggestions on how to fix it. Do you have any ideas what went wrong and how to fix it?

@saveurlinux - GPS fix definitely seems slower with my OnePlus 6t than with my Volla, but I am still able to use it for turn-by-turn navigation (via uNav or PureMaps). If I was in Europe I think I would prefer the Volla, but given that when I was travelling here in the USA there were areas where I could not get LTE mobile data with it, having another device where I can reliably get both calls and LTE from a single carrier became the priority. Best regards, Steve Berson

@Fizz said in Installing to Pixel 3a: Interestingly, the Installer asked me to rate how the installation went, i said "pass", but then it gives me a warning that the installation was stopped due to a problem. It's the reporting process that is currently broken. Glad to hear you got it installed and are now up and running!

@Caedem Thank you very much. I added most of this results to the app. Unfortunately there were inconsistencies in the previous version with “--num-threads = 2”. With the new version (1.2.1), the tests were slightly changed and should be more consistent now.

@keneda I guess that PureOS is "compliant" if they don't include the linux-firmware package by default, but the phone hardware itself wouldn't comply, because of the modem. AFAIK, the Bluetooth/WiFi support in Librem 5 is also a bit lacking because Purism want to only use BT/WiFi in their systems, which doesn't require binary firmware blob, which the newer Atheros chips that support newer Bluetooth and WiFi versions, do.

@zubozrout said in Smooth Edges (name pending) - Let's Fix the Bugs That Drive You Mad: the camera—it’s the main limitation for me. From what I understand, this isn’t something that can be fixed simply by creating a new camera app, as the issue seems to run through multiple levels of the system. As far as I recall, the core limitation is already present in Halium: shots take too long, not all features are exposed, higher resolutions can easily overexpose, and overall the photos look far worse compared to what Android delivers. Not sure exactly what is the problem as there too many you cite; maybe the main problem is that you have high expectations and are an elite user about photo. That's a bit like judging of a computer system by a music expert, these guys can detect one tenth of second of delay, a fourth of a tone, minute details that beotians like me can't even perceive whatever effort they do. And I'm not so atypical from what I gather of the judgement of these music experts on the efforts of spontaneous singers in public events (they are utterly awful - however I never noticed it before being said so). So what's wrong with photo app of UT for someone like me? the focus for near objects. When taking a photo and the subject is half a meter (let's say one foot for our US friends) away, the focus is terrible, like, the keys on a keyboard can hardly be deciphered, and waiting does not provide much relief. In contrast, a Waydroid photo on the same device in exactly the same setup looks correct. This does not look like an unfixable problem, since switching to film, the focus at the same distance is correct. I just tried it and it seems that after taking a short film, the focus is then correct for taking a photo. While this is hardly a workaround, it make me think that for the photo app being usable for ignoramuses like myself (and I'd say 99% of users), it is probably not necessary to rebuild the whole system including Halium.

Yeah obviously the FP2 has a lot of problems of its own, that are definitely not specific to UT, and be not mistaken, I had a great experience with this OS and am not reverting to Android; it's just that pooky asked about the FP2, and here is its current state of porting ^^

Folks, this thread is going in circles. How about I say this to end it? I think the original question "Is the Volla Phone identical to the GS290" has been solved. Sorry to the OP for this thread getting so derailed... To make it clear: Hallo Welt Systems sponsors the UBports Foundation. Money has exchanged hands so that we can continue to make the operating system. Hallo Welt sees this as part of their business interest for reasons that I can really only speculate on (it's one of those things I'm not directly involved in). Of course I would prefer people purchase our partner's device. It makes it more likely that our partner will work with us in the future. Volla has worked with us, even going so far as to hire developers to work on Ubuntu Touch and train staff to support it. That is no small feat. When people see that you can purchase a device that might run the same software for much cheaper than the partner's device, of course some will want to do that. Those people are free to try to do that through whatever means they see fit. I'm not going to say "oh but think of the poor software developers." One or two people trying to save a buck by buying the GS290 and jumping through hoops to flash open source software onto it probably won't break the bank. If someone wants to do that, let them. I also won't say that you should do it, because we don't test it. If something breaks, neither us nor Hallo Welt will help you fix it. Gigaset probably won't either. You definitely should not contact any of us with bugs you experience on the GS290 without having a Volla Phone to verify, I would find that rather rude. Whether a lack of support is a problem for you is up to you. It's your money and your time. Please, understand that we don't need people fighting tooth and nail for the virtues of Ubuntu Touch, or that every user should donate to it, or protect it. Of course I think Ubuntu Touch is great, and that every user should donate to it if they can. It's in my best interest if you do. But we wouldn't continue working on it, licensing it under the licenses that we do, if we didn't understand the risks of that too. We're all adults here, and I'm pretty sure we can each figure out how much contribution to Ubuntu Touch is enough for us. Do what you want with the software, within the bounds of the license. And continue letting us know when you think we've overstepped bounds or handled a situation poorly. It's that kind of feedback that keeps us righted. To that end, I'll make it clear here: We won't artificially block the UBports Installer from installing software to an unsupported device. Even today, you can try installing the Nexus 5 image of Ubuntu Touch on an Xperia X. You shouldn't because it won't boot (the UBports Installer will probably hit an error before that even happens), but it's an option. That's what the "manually select device' option does. It's how people install the Pixel 3a image to the Pixel 3a XL, even though the two devices identify differently. We keep it there in case we mess up a device's codename mapping, or for people who are really sure they want to install the thing. It's the "yes, I'm really sure" button. And we'll probably keep it there for a long time. I'm locking this thread now. If you're interested in discussing any of the points I've made here, please make a new one and tag me. I'll try to answer to the best of my ability. (Edited to remove non-inclusive language)

This thread is now very long and quite hard to follow (something that happenend to the MMS thread, see above link) and the main issues have been repeated in various ways by various contributors all making valid points of view. So it makes a good reference point as to the state and views on PinePhone developement to date 28/06/21. Specific new issues or questions can still be posted in the PinePhone sub category but I do think this thread has run it's course so will lock it. Once more thanks to all who have contributed to this thread in your normal friendly but robust mannor.

@MrT10001 Just got back to my bricked tab problem and re-visited your post. You mention the possible need to split the case. Here's some information I found you may be interested in: The tablet uses a Snapdragon processor by Qualcomm. If you need to trigger EDL mode, you don't need to open the case. There's an easier way. Buy an EDL Deep Flash Cable, which has a button to trigger EDL mode. They are available on ebay quite cheaply. Best regards.

Evaluation of criteria to get Morph less prone to fingerprinting. This has been discussed earlier this year (https://forums.ubports.com/post/44876) and people would feel more comfortable using Morph browser knowing the utmost has been done to minimize the risk.

@jackharness said in Pixel 3a XL experience: Network support is very hit-or-miss out here unless you go with Verizon, and I honestly couldn't be bothered with the switch. Keeping a number while switching plans is a hassle, and keeping my number is important to me. I'll definitely keep my eye out for VoLTE support, though. Yes, unfortunately several parts of the US are only covered decently by Verizon. VoLTE support would be a big win. As noted, Droidian may be worth trying, but you won't have the UT / Lomiri goodness there yet.
