Yeah obviously the FP2 has a lot of problems of its own, that are definitely not specific to UT, and be not mistaken, I had a great experience with this OS and am not reverting to Android; it's just that pooky asked about the FP2, and here is its current state of porting ^^

Folks, this thread is going in circles. How about I say this to end it? I think the original question "Is the Volla Phone identical to the GS290" has been solved. Sorry to the OP for this thread getting so derailed... To make it clear: Hallo Welt Systems sponsors the UBports Foundation. Money has exchanged hands so that we can continue to make the operating system. Hallo Welt sees this as part of their business interest for reasons that I can really only speculate on (it's one of those things I'm not directly involved in). Of course I would prefer people purchase our partner's device. It makes it more likely that our partner will work with us in the future. Volla has worked with us, even going so far as to hire developers to work on Ubuntu Touch and train staff to support it. That is no small feat. When people see that you can purchase a device that might run the same software for much cheaper than the partner's device, of course some will want to do that. Those people are free to try to do that through whatever means they see fit. I'm not going to say "oh but think of the poor software developers." One or two people trying to save a buck by buying the GS290 and jumping through hoops to flash open source software onto it probably won't break the bank. If someone wants to do that, let them. I also won't say that you should do it, because we don't test it. If something breaks, neither us nor Hallo Welt will help you fix it. Gigaset probably won't either. You definitely should not contact any of us with bugs you experience on the GS290 without having a Volla Phone to verify, I would find that rather rude. Whether a lack of support is a problem for you is up to you. It's your money and your time. Please, understand that we don't need people fighting tooth and nail for the virtues of Ubuntu Touch, or that every user should donate to it, or protect it. Of course I think Ubuntu Touch is great, and that every user should donate to it if they can. It's in my best interest if you do. But we wouldn't continue working on it, licensing it under the licenses that we do, if we didn't understand the risks of that too. We're all adults here, and I'm pretty sure we can each figure out how much contribution to Ubuntu Touch is enough for us. Do what you want with the software, within the bounds of the license. And continue letting us know when you think we've overstepped bounds or handled a situation poorly. It's that kind of feedback that keeps us righted. To that end, I'll make it clear here: We won't artificially block the UBports Installer from installing software to an unsupported device. Even today, you can try installing the Nexus 5 image of Ubuntu Touch on an Xperia X. You shouldn't because it won't boot (the UBports Installer will probably hit an error before that even happens), but it's an option. That's what the "manually select device' option does. It's how people install the Pixel 3a image to the Pixel 3a XL, even though the two devices identify differently. We keep it there in case we mess up a device's codename mapping, or for people who are really sure they want to install the thing. It's the "yes, I'm really sure" button. And we'll probably keep it there for a long time. I'm locking this thread now. If you're interested in discussing any of the points I've made here, please make a new one and tag me. I'll try to answer to the best of my ability. (Edited to remove non-inclusive language)

This thread is now very long and quite hard to follow (something that happenend to the MMS thread, see above link) and the main issues have been repeated in various ways by various contributors all making valid points of view. So it makes a good reference point as to the state and views on PinePhone developement to date 28/06/21. Specific new issues or questions can still be posted in the PinePhone sub category but I do think this thread has run it's course so will lock it. Once more thanks to all who have contributed to this thread in your normal friendly but robust mannor.

@MrT10001 Just got back to my bricked tab problem and re-visited your post. You mention the possible need to split the case. Here's some information I found you may be interested in: The tablet uses a Snapdragon processor by Qualcomm. If you need to trigger EDL mode, you don't need to open the case. There's an easier way. Buy an EDL Deep Flash Cable, which has a button to trigger EDL mode. They are available on ebay quite cheaply. Best regards.

Evaluation of criteria to get Morph less prone to fingerprinting. This has been discussed earlier this year (https://forums.ubports.com/post/44876) and people would feel more comfortable using Morph browser knowing the utmost has been done to minimize the risk.

@jackharness said in Pixel 3a XL experience: Network support is very hit-or-miss out here unless you go with Verizon, and I honestly couldn't be bothered with the switch. Keeping a number while switching plans is a hassle, and keeping my number is important to me. I'll definitely keep my eye out for VoLTE support, though. Yes, unfortunately several parts of the US are only covered decently by Verizon. VoLTE support would be a big win. As noted, Droidian may be worth trying, but you won't have the UT / Lomiri goodness there yet.

@cliffcoggin Hi, People who are able to donate a significant amount of money are used to getting what they think they will get, otherwise it will be returned or claimed. What is not possible with donations, so they will be careful not to spend a lot of money in advance, but they want to try it out to form a satisfaction ranking, on the basis of which they decide what it is worth to you. Only with hobbies and other passions or for donations to charities, the money plays a subordinate role. It's just the way it is in this world, you can't deny it or change it. Greetings Mario

@Bocephus said in Volla Phone X23 about to ship: It's obvious English isn't your first language Maybe english is not my first langage, but i understand it enough to know calling "dumb" what someone says is offensive, and that this person can take it personally as an insult (in fact, in any langage...). I also understand it enough to recognise irony, and irony is not dumb, it's just irony, involving marmelade in present way... On this forum, code of conduct allows irony, not calling dumb people or what they say.

Some caveats about this, quoting from the UBOF Telegram group: Marius Gripsgard, [20.11.18 21:47] [In reply to myii] thats the old one that wraps here Marius Gripsgard, [20.11.18 21:48] "here maps" Marius Gripsgard, [20.11.18 21:50] [In reply to myii] that has been removed, since here requre licensing Marius Gripsgard, [20.11.18 21:52] we are hopefully moving away from ubuntu location service and just use geoclue and qtlocation, and use the hybris platform myii, [20.11.18 21:52] Is it OK to use espoo in the meantime? Marius Gripsgard, [20.11.18 21:52] [In reply to myii] yeah should be ok Marius Gripsgard, [20.11.18 21:53] [In reply to myii] that will just use gps though, no agps support Key points: espoo uses HERE Maps, which requires licensing Lacks AGPS

The most important thing to me is privacy. Not to be in the hand of Google or apple or windows or anyone else. It haven't to be mainstream, but it have to respect me. It is also important to me to use my device as long as I want, secure. And not have to by a new device. (I know this is kind of not realistic because it is in the nature of the things that operating systems need more powered devices when the develloping is going on) In this context a verry huge thank you to the people of ubports and halium.

@sverzegnassi The new UX default Scope / screen mockup looks very nice. Nonetheless, even though that the Scopes idea will be dumped, I would expect that we would like to show at least same information as before on the UX default screen. Meaning we will keep the function code of the Scopes and will throw away the UX parts. So, when would you expect to get the new UX default screen running? How would we migrate from the Scopes to the new screen causing as less as possible loss of functionality (since at least IMHO some of the functionality of the scopes is really helpful)?

@jjconstr said in Installing UT on N5 stuck in boot loop: @cela Thanks for the tips. They were helpful. I didn't have to check youtube. I used my fingernail to remove the back, took out some screws I didn't need to, lifted the battery connector and then the battery. Putting a new battery in didn't correct the boot loop though. I also poked and prodded the switch to see if it would loosen up and work. No deal. Looks like there is a small pin or shaft that the button pushes on when depressed. It doesn't look like it moves at this point. I appreciate your help! Thank you, jjconstr I guess I was one of lucky 1% that swapping out the battery worked for. Careful with the hot gun and shield any parts that might melt when you swap the switch, those switches are so tiny good luck.
